I live in the suburbs of seattle and am hoping to move to downtown (if not denmark), and although transit and bike infrastructure is really only good close to the center of the city, its pretty nice here and great to see that were improving a lot i guess the reason that so much of us care is because of walkabke places such as Pike Place Market and the whole area around westlake to pioneer square station you really feel the difference coming from a car infested place, and people want more walkable places Comment from : Orange Duster |
Seattle is #1 because when you go from zero light rail to a little bit of light rail you're gonna have a jump Lived in Seattle for 20 yrs and its hardly an Urbanist utopia They tore down the Alaskan Way Viaduct (good) but replaced it with a CAR tunnel! The Seattle Metro area is still very much a car dependent region, very slow and late to the game when it comes to mass transiit with a history of resistance regionally but also locallyPortland is better in every Urbanist/Urban planning metric and its not even close Yes Seattle does have a handful of walkable neighborhoods and is VASTLY better than the Eastside which is a car centric suburban hellscape! Just don't move to Seattle expecting anything remotely like San Fran, Boston, Portland, because it's a pretty big step below Comment from : Ken MacMahon |
Would love a deep dive on Portland, OR! Especially a comparison of what we are doing right and how things can be improved in your opinion Comment from : Blaine Brumbaugh |
Didn't car companies buy up street cars to force Americans to buy cars? Too many parking lots Who pays for that? Comment from : Abcd |
I'd be into hearing your take on Portland transportation and road infrastructure system Especially seeing as how you worked in planning there if I recall correctly? Cheers Comment from : Lucas Kerper |
As someone who lives in Amarillo i can't understate how much the highway has gutted our city The current city council claims to be on an effort to revitalize downtown but they're idea of investing in downtown is still stuck in the 60's Just in the last few years ive seen dozens of city blocks downtown get raised for parking Our main investor in downtown, Amarillo national bank is still convinced more parking will bring more business to downtown Eventually there won't be a downtown to come to just a massive parking lot The highway and swaths of surface parking have plummeted the property values downtown and in the surrounding neighborhoods Everyone living here wonders why we have a ghetto reputation while they drive on the problem every day Comment from : mcsomeone |
I live in Austin, Texas so I get the triple threat of insufferable car culture, insufferable heat, and insufferable tech bros who are utterly convinced that their useless crypto start-up with no revenue makes them the next Steve Jobs Comment from : WhatIsThis |
sad to see LA in the dishonorable mentions because the metro rail network has expanded massively during this time period, but it's made barely a dent given the sheer size of the city I guess Comment from : potatoindespair |
Seattle W baby!!! Comment from : Kameron Smith |
Bummed to see San Diego not on here they seem to have a solid transit system going Comment from : Belize |
I was born in August 2001 in Salt Lake City and lived there ever since Comment from : This is How I Bennett! |
I live and commute in the SF Bay Area and Fremont has always had big wide stroads for as long as I can remember 'Stroads' are VERY common in Fremont and in the Silicon Valley (Santa Clara County) I hope that the plan does update and improve, but Fremont is QUEEN when it comes to big wide open parking lots, and wide multi-lane roads, so it will take years to change over Comment from : Eric |
What's with the tone? Comment from : Dan S |
Those 70k new people in SF live in tents on the streets Comment from : kevin murphy |
I don't care how much you improve a city, I would still never live in one! Comment from : Obamaistoast2012 |
how about crime? where do you rate a city being walkable/cyclable when crime is apparent I think people would be discouraged to walk/ride in the streets of San Francisco or outside of Chicago Square Comment from : Vlad Mitchell |
Dishonorable mention Columbus, Ohio Growing like crazy and still only an OK bus system with NO plans for any rail Comment from : David Stanton |
Enjoying the content/conversations about city planningkeeep them coming Comment from : James Godfrey |
I lasted 47 seconds You need a new narrator Comment from : StormCrowYo |
Thanks the gods for the dishonorables I don't come to this channel for positivity or progress They saved the video by taking a giant poop right in the middle of it Writing from The Auto-centric City, Tulsa, OK, USA Comment from : J Potter |
Salt Lake checking in One thing I think you missed is a pretty decent expansion of bike lanes, both new ones and upgrading some existing ones to protected lanes Comment from : Jackson Eardley |
The mentally ill and chemically addicted that dominate these cities are now moving more efficiently Comment from : W W |
I love seeing all of these cities change between 2007-2009 to their modern day appearance that looks clean and well cared for I hope the dishonorable mentions start improving soon too Comment from : Mya Levis |
ACtransit has actually gotten a lot worse in that time somehow brbrEmeryville would probably make this list too if it met the pop threshold Comment from : Maya |
I know San Antonio doesn’t make up a lot of your viewership (16:22) but pls pls talk about it more, and be critical! brbrSATX is the 7th largest city in America and consistently votes blue in presidential elections Ppl in my hometown may not be aware of urbanism bc they’re so used to car-centric infrastructure, but we have an international airport and a lot of people going back and forth between Mexico — so we’re aware of other types of cities! I’m sure your Texan audience would appreciate understanding where our cities went wrong and your take on how we could improve what we’ve already got This summer was the hottest on record, and people really felt that If we can’t get the funding for transit, maybe we can at least plant native plants along the highways and cover parking lots w solar panels while providing shade? brbrWould love your thoughts! Surely Texans can’t all just resign ourselves to letting our land get covered in sprawling highways 😢 what alternatives could you envision? Thank you!! Comment from : Sam Panchèvre |
I want a video about Portland! Comment from : Miracle Wade |
Go Dawgs!!! Comment from : rolyrod14 |
I'm kind of sad to see places like New York, Boston, and Chicago on this list but not Philadelphia What happened with us? Comment from : Twix26 |
I live in Seattle and suspected it would be near the top Part of the reason is that we've been a backward city in terms of mass-transit continuously voting it down since the 70s Much of the last decade was about catching up, though very pleased to see that we're now above average Comment from : blissful kitty |
San Francisco transit is increased by the homeless people Comment from : Alexander Lipko |
I keep seeing videos on how San Francisco has really gone down the drain, especially downtown with loads of homeless on the streets, large amounts of retail theft, and half the stores closed -- If that's not all a bunch of exaggerations I have to wonder how San Fran would rate today Comment from : James Firmiss |
Thanks Wondering if this affects others: Tucson has several hundred miles of bikelanes, well utilized, but there's a big increase here in hit-&-runs I stopped biking when a rider (with-helmut & in the bikelane) was sent into a fatal coma I've also stopped in-city walking because of too many distracted drivers How true is this for other places? VR driver's ed could really help Comment from : Emma Hardesty |
My preference for car-free city living has nothing to do with my political outlook Comment from : BGTuyau |
Lol SF Oakland and Seattle Hope you like Crime homelessness taxes and OVERALL POOR LIVING CONDITIONS with growing class inequity Comment from : DJDonkeytron |
I would've thought Denver would do better Their light rail is expanding rapidly and I was surprised to learn my very established friend who moved there a decade ago does not own a car Comment from : Nikhill Rao |
Please do a "best conservative cities" I moved away from SF due to politics Not interested in Oakland, Portland, Seattle, Freemont for the same reason brbrAlso prefer somewhere with a great airport, not crazy elevation (sorry Denver), and ideally mild winters brbrWhere would you suggest? Comment from : JustMe |
One day ill be in a walkable city Comment from : malice |
10:45 ugh…this is SUCH an elitist take brbrHave you ever taken public transit in Dallas/Ft Worth?brbrIf you’re taking a bus, it’s extremely unreliable, slow, and waiting for a bus in 100+ degree heat is unbearablebrbrThe light rail is nice, but it doesn’t have great park and ride options, and doesn’t really stop anywhere outside downtown or DFW that is convenient to anything They just seem like random stops at certain distance intervals nearby some intersections that make sensebrbrPolitics have nothing to do with it, as LA clearly shows you in the same video brbrThese cities were designed for the car, and when that’s already the case…it’s a huge uphill battle to make that transit actually make sensebrbrEspecially in the south where the weather is brutally hot and you don’t want to walk long distances (and especially not bike)brbrYou can easily explain a lot of your biking scores by overlaying weather… Comment from : Jonathan Pusar |
Minneapolis St Paul is a great City for its accessible and diverse transportation systemsbrbrI just went there during January Such a fun city to walk Comment from : EXPRESSION MUSIC TRACKS |
Hmm Comment from : Carlton Bauer |
I'm on a city council in the Seattle suburbs I totally guessed Seattle When I talk to residents about walkability, they are totally on board Everyone it seems in the area understands why walkability is important But HOA's, critical areas, and funding make it very, very hard Also the city planning from the 90's gave our town an insurmountable last mile problem during its expansion phasebrbrSo change will be slow But I think at least in this city, it will get better over the next 100 years Comment from : Astromancerguy |
You talk too much Comment from : NaySay Network |
Mormonism is a little too much for me Comment from : Jayden Sanchez |
I live in Utah meh at least its affordable Comment from : Jayden Sanchez |
As a carless human in Stockton, Ca we have a huge issue with city politics and corruption It has created a stagnating city where nothing gets done unfortunately I love it here and it has tons of potential but it's an uphill battle for sure brbrThank you for your insightful videos, most of us residents are trying to make this a nicer community to live in even though our city keeps undercutting all the hard work put in whether it's cutting down trees on the sidewalks or making it hard to get bike lines installed Comment from : Aaron Rowley |
I can see Seattle but I'm very surprised you didn't put Austin or Charlotte I feel like they have made much improvement Comment from : Jacob Wise |
Screw urban living I love my rich suburb where everyones home is in the millions Why on god green earth would i trade that for poor urban living? Comment from : Derek Constantino |
You will never get Americans out of cars, most all these city’s are high crime city’s and places you wouldn’t want to live in Comment from : Michael Pare |
Shout Out to Arlington VA for its commitment to bike lanes But, the region as a whole has a shameful record when it comes to public transportation Comment from : Harper |
When mass transit is present, crime follows Comment from : VM |
Proud to be part of that large Seattle viewership Comment from : Zaha Wolfe |
I was wondering if the Denver area would show up on this list They've built all kinds of lite rails out to the airport and up the US36 corridor a bit But I knew there was a reason I loved Seattle Comment from : Procyon Nova |
I get a gold star :) I knew it, I enjoy living in Seattle Comment from : No, Thank you |
I wish Miami would be on this list, I hateee having to need to use a car for everything 😭 AND NOT TO MENTION THE HORRIBLE EVERYDAY TRAFFIC!! Comment from : Daniel Placencia |
Salt lake is definitely better with the red line out to the south west part of the valley We just need better connections from Utah valley into the south west part of the salt lake valley Comment from : Uncle Jack |
I’m from North Carolina and this video explains all my frustrations Side note, I really want to move to Seattle Comment from : Andrew Caress |
Hello from Boston We just added a green line extension through Somerville, where I live This included a continuation of the Somerville Community Path which is very heavily used including by bikes and critical to commutes But its completion isn't even as old as this video We just finished it We did finish a bike path through Cambridge and Watertown recently as well as a bike path along the Mystic River through Ten Hills / Assembly Sq where there's a relatively new subway station There was also 10 miles of bike lane added in Boston proper back in I think 2022 it was announced This is just what I know off the top of my head but I can say it feels like Boston is doing a lot of proactively build out more public transit a bike infrastructure so I'm happy but not too surprised to see us show up here We're not without our challenges for sure The MBTA has been having lots of technical issues But it's something we value here so, eh, it's getting worked on Comment from : Mike MacHenry |
It seems like your stats are off, Chicago, New York and San Francisco have lost thousands of residents over the past 3 years Comment from : NG9X |
That’s so true about Seattle The fact it is squeezed between all the bodies of water into isthmus makes it so easily accessible by micro mobility and all the hills make all-dimensions travel on e-bike or scooter a pure joy to me Comment from : Ignat Babenko |
It’s a good thing since you can’t afford a car in Seattle Comment from : John Miller |
I moved to Seattle for this very reason (and I donated my car to charity!) Comment from : AndrewRoivas |
You lost me at NY……the dangers of the subways right now is forcing other modes of transportation…ie cars Comment from : Chris Brimhall |
Most people are too afraid to take public transport in those cities What’s the point if you end up dead by being politically correct Comment from : kenneth carney |
see what Seattle did is what I want all cities to do all over the country and that's make biking and walking easier plus making public transit a better option for more people but also add greenery and focus on landscaping as well and put apartments above stores and restaurants and make it where people can walk to these places from their apartments and to the train or a bus they turned what was an ugly street into something beautiful and functional Comment from : patrick jackson |
There’s a lot of NIMBY people that don’t really see the benefits of urban cities Comment from : Adan R |
As a lifelong Washingtonian who lived in Seattle for roughly 10 years up until last year, regardless of transportation, I am so glad to have moved across the lake into Bellevue Seattle is s shit show Bellevue is so much nicer Comment from : Charlie Marsh |
Re: Fremont, CA I believe there is a State law that requires mixed use development of the BART (Rail System) stations This means developing all of their parking lots into parking structures plus mixed use I live in El Cerrito where both of our BART Stations are being developed One of the stations located near a local shopping center, will feature a street level public library and public service offices Comment from : Carl Groch |
Now if only DC’s metro would improve at Seattle levels! Yes, we’ve extended the silver line to FINALLY include Dulles, but it shouldn’t have taken decades to do so And that’s just one issue out of many lol! Comment from : Roma |
Birmingham would surely have been in the list if it was a tad larger Comment from : Misty Lee |
Rooting for Minneapolis & Kansas City to progressbrMinneapolis approved more mid- size buildings, triplexes KC got a nice tram (mostly for tourists) Comment from : Hershey Lima |
As always: where there is good public transportation, people will move in Comment from : Velerios |
holy cow, fremont would do so much better if that parking lot was a park with lots of trees, people would want to be there and the station is right next to it so there is ways to get to it Comment from : Mob |
I want nice cities so progressive American cities are off the table for me Comment from : o165o |
Do something with stop lights What that might be, I'm not sure Where I live, there was a congested 4-lane stroad with many frustrating stop-lights It's now 2-lane with 2 dedicated bus lanes outside and no change in the stop-lights The congestion frustration is worse I'm going to do what I can to avoid being on that road The 'improvement', which took 3 frustrating years, is worse than the way it was before Comment from : James Waters |
Just from a transport planning perspective, "build it and they will come" doesn't apply to cycling and walking infrastructure - it's more about reconnecting communities and providing a safer, nicer option to the car Comment from : math01 |
The purple W was a clue Comment from : R B Dawg |
Def let’s get a video all about portland history and planning I remember when light rail came in and everyone said it was a waste of money and wouldn’t make it in tickets! Comment from : Boondoc |
Sally the Spokes Salmon is what I think boosted Seattle transit ridership!❤ and the light rail Comment from : Stephani Vrell |
theres been alot of construction in the chi on renewing train/bus stations Comment from : Yonkocheeks |
Let's go bay area! Too bad Bart isn't on the peninsula because of NIMBYS and the horribly scheduled caltrain If we invested more into caltrain and modernized it it'll be way better to go around the bay Comment from : Charlie Tian |
For such a negative Nelly you sure have great content Maybe a little more positivity on your tone would improve your viewership Comment from : J B |
Oh manif Fremont, San Francisco and Oakland is considered better We are in trouble Comment from : Aaron P |
Did you look at land use changes? It seems to me like that would have almost as big of an effect as new transportation infrastructure Transit is good at getting people from where they are to where they want to be - big groups of [where people are] and big developments of [where people want to be] seem like they may boost numbers (if there is good transit/walkways/bike paths connecting them) Comment from : kevin smith |
I was hoping Philadelphia was on there I feel like we had big improvements Comment from : Nefertiti Kimagawa |
California has some of the best agricultural land in the country and yet we love covering it in asphalt, sad! Comment from : Luke Cunningham |
Shout out to Fresno, Bakersfield, Modesto, Stockton, and the Central Valley!!! We always top the lists of bad things to be known for! We'd probably even top the list of places on the most lists of places known for bad things It's more conservative here, so that accounts for some of the priorities, decisions, and problems There was a local measure in a recent election to fix the roads and infrastructure, which sounded great but it turned out being about increasing car-centric infrastructure rather than safer, walkable, bike-friendly, transit-oriented roads and infrastructure Speaking of bad lists, Fresno is #1 in car-related deaths I'm lost several friends this way and I'm scared I'll lose more Comment from : pongop |
Please please talk more about portland I moved here and I love riding my bike to work I would love to know where they are headed Comment from : Elijah Wilcynski |
Great video! Comment from : chunkmeupthebutt |
Despite transit investment in LA city, increase rents and home prices, gentrification metrowide, has gutted the working class and large transit dependent riders can't afford living in LA New residents are more affluent and drive or use ubers vs bus train As LA becomes more expensive the car share will increase Comment from : saybanana |
People want control and freedom Cities generally don’t offer that - at least not in the way Americans have gotten used to Comment from : Kevin M Downey |
I don’t live in SF but I’m frequently visiting my friends in the mission… and although the uncleanliness (and safety unfortunately) of bart leaves MUCH to be desired, I always have an easy time finding transportation from one location to the next I think creating bus/metro/taxi lanes on van ness and market, bretc, was pretty great idea too; since you no longer get stuck behind stopping buses when driving, and the bus is able to get you to your destination faster brbrThe drug use at bart stations still needs a whole bunch of attention to make it pleasant though… I’m all for decriminalizing drugs, but more and more I find myself considering court-induced rehabilitation as a solution Comment from : Noelle McCoy |
I like suburbs because I rarely have to worry about getting stabbed by a homeless person Comment from : BMWWolf |
