2:34 - Let's not forget MTV, Gentlemen Music videos changed EVERYTHING Nobody wanted to watch a vid with a guy sitting in a chair playing an acoustic guitar The first damn video was Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star", for God's sake Video also made it possible for the VERY untalented to be successful because it wasn't about the music so much as the image I LOVED MTV, but I also noticed that music in general took a nose dive as far as TALENT was concerned If you had a synth and a drum machine and wore a lot of make-up, the tune was a hit Right? I have both because my theory is to learn how to play on an electric and practice on an acoustic You'll become a better player Comment from : zebfox011 |
I learned classical guitar and general steel string I had a hard time switching to electric I would press strings too hard which would change their pitch; I would get extra sounds on the electric ( I have to be very cognizant on what my picking hand is touching); had to change posture etc Comment from : harlequin75 |

I’ve been an acoustic player since i was 17 (now 24) Only now I have began practicing and for me electric is way harder! You know, bending properly, the vibrato, bending and concentrating on playing power chords without that stupid wshh noise when you change power chords Challenging stuff Comment from : Artem Esaulkov |

I've been playing acoustic guitar for 25 years but I just started playing electric this year Super fun to learn all these new things Though when I was younger every time I was handed an electric I felt so disconnected from everything I knew about guitar and I thought I always sounded silly Comment from : lordseph |
I started learning on electric, cus I wanted to Rock Distortion covers a lot of Sins, so I loved it Playing acoustic forced me to play better, and at this point, I prefer acoustic Plus, it's much more neighborhood friendly When I do go electric, I like it Loud, playing off the Amp Headphones can't create the natural sound of a room, what have you Comment from : Mark Rushton |

A great way to listen to your playing habits is to PRACTICE in the dark For some reason, you have to rely on your touch and your ears to hear the tone and dynamics Comment from : A J Fronce |
You guys need to listen to Opeth HEAPS of acoustic, along with dark, heavy, metal riffs Comment from : S Drak |
I think the perception for a lot of younger players today is that acoustic is 'softer', 'older' (which is a negative in their eyes), and more 'folk' brAs a drummer, playing to a click when recording comes largely (I think) from the software grid It's hard to match up tracks and edit when the drums aren't locked to whatever time is set in the software When i record, I use a click, but playing with other musicians, I never use it Honestly, I hate clicks, but often, the software (and/or producer) determines the need Comment from : Madness by Design |
All Valid points But ?? What about the Absolute New Musician's ??? Thats why Punk was so Fresh Because you had people who just wanted to be on stage with Guitars & stuff & Play I met ( over the years ) lot's of young people who had been ' Crushed ' by Musicians who laughed at their 1st attempt's & Yet I also found that the really Gr8 Musicians were the one's who would take the time to encourage you & give you a few tip's I know you are all gr8 Teachers in your own way But growing up poor & struggling to find strings for your Guitar at all was a Gr8 teacher for me As Mark Knopfler said in an interview " If you want to learn you will make it happen " Fight through the early pains of practice & learning etc Comment from : ben maguire |

The biggest lesson I ever got from my dad was, NEVER STOP Don't stop playing under any circumstances Finish the effing song Don't stop if you mess up a chord Don't stop if you get off tempo Don't stop if you get lost Don't stop if you drop your pick Don't stop if you step on your cord and screw something up Don't stop if a string breaks Don't stop if you have to piss your pants, if you knock your beer over, if a hornet lands on your face don't stop playing unless someone has to call 911 for something Figure it out Mute all the strings and keep strumming nothing if you have to try to get back on track But NEVER STOP! Comment from : nurabsal |

Smashing pumpkinsacoustic and heavy Comment from : Bryan Smith |
I have picked up my first guitar a couple of days ago Of course I bought an electric because that's what I think sounds coolest and also: metal 😂 BUT while at home I often just pick up the guitar and just practice for 10-15 minutes without plugging in the amp or turning it on so I was wondering as a complete beginner is it possible to learn both at the same time? For more focused sessions I probably would use the e guitar but when just wanting to repeat something real quick the acoustic is more convenient Comment from : gonzo #144 |

I'm 80 deaf and plays the sax in the high school band, and I had the reputation of having good timing, and not get lost in the songs But my hearing loss is from birth control which is nerve development damage, long story short I had the nerves to hear lower sound pitch and miss out the higher pitch, which allow me to be tune to the drums beats I didn't drift away to the flutes or Clarinets I think hearing you guys talk made me click in my brain about playing along to the drums Comment from : Russell Roberts |

11:25 Im well into my bass and guitar playing, but still learning guitar Sometimes when im bored I just play into pro tools along with spotify and record it Listening back to those is sometimes really humbling Like "Damn I really sucked at that part" and go back and work on it Obviously not everyone has a interface and the gear to record into pro tools, but recording yourself is super important if you want to get better Also at 13:30, playing with a drummer is an incredible way to get some coordination between playing with others down I've been playing with my drummer for close to 2 1/2 years and I know exactly when he is gonna do some sort of fill, because Im used to his drumming The metronome part is also a good point, instead of playing to the click, play to each other, and if you can develop that skill of being able to keep in tempo even when its changing is huge, especially as a bass player Feel is the most important thing to a bass+drums groove, not the click Comment from : KujoB6 |
I learned on an electric hollow body (to piss off my Dad, a banjo player) but Dad taught me finger picking which I used Sold my guitar in college, returned to playing decades later and found finger picking easy and the pick clumsy Comment from : Douglas Axtell |
I've come back to this video because for the last couple of years, I've mainly been playing an electric with a cover band for awhile and after recently after picking up my acoustic I find that some of those skills have diminished It took me a good couple of months to get back to playing well on my acoustic again My musical tastes are changing back towards the singer songwriter tunes of the past that I now find a lot more satisfying to play at my little solo gigs brI also feel a greater connection with the audience as the smaller venues are more intimate Comment from : Charlie OBrien |

The avenged sevenfold song thatRhett was talking about was either “seize the day” or “so far away” Comment from : Jake Seitz |
Another EXCELLENT video from Mr Beato Comment from : Steven Koehler |
One big thing not mentioned is playing acoustic and electric is two separate things If you go play your electric repertoire on an acoustic it will sound like an electric player playing acoustic Exemple: listen to Brad Paisley play acoustic you can tell he is not an acoustic player He just plays his electric riffs But if you listen to someone like Clarence White he clearly separates the two This is very important Learn your craft to each instruments Comment from : Acadian Flatpicker |
