Hell, I’m 71 and just started I’ve played drums since I was 8, not great, but I play pretty good I picked up harmonica at age 45 and play it better than most But, I always admired guitarists So, I’m still recovering from knee replacement and wasn’t going anywhere so, one day, I decided to start looking at guitars I bought a Harley Benton Sunburst Les Paul I figured if Duane Allman liked Lesters, who am I to argue with his logic? I love this ax, but, I don’t know any better So, scoot over Derek Trucks, I’m comin through! brI love your sense of humor, so, I liked and subscribed Now, teach me sumptin

You may have experienced them by now But I'm the world record holder of being the longest beginner guitarist I've been a beginner for 6 years now I have two firefly guitars 1 double cut P90's And a les paul style They are amazing well built guitars with goto tuners they stay in tune really good 22000 dollars shipped anywhere in America will get you one But if you know nonthing about basic setup you would want to take it to a Luther Once dialed in hard to beat for the money Most people compare them to a 6 -8 hundred dollar epiphone And yeah that's about right

I started playing when I was around 15 being instructed by my older brother who had started playing in the 1950s at 7 he also learned banjo and bass to say the least he was good and enjoyed it he later played in bands ,me on the other hand did not care about playing plus I had no musical talent in my later years I smashed my left ring finger in a dump truck tailgate, fast forward to today I am 65 and my brother is in his mid 70s and very sick thanks to being a guitarist in the 1960s, he decided to send all his guitars to me which I now haveThanks for your frank utube for I am going to try again to learn T-Man

Mine are absolutely NOT bending that waybrAnd just because you said it I'm totally going to learn Wonderwall now ;) Just need those fingers to bend correctly first So until further notice - here's my version of WonderWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaa

Gyika
Hi, I'm from muskogee and I've recently started learning guitar after my new girlfriend and her kids purchased me a new custom shop Les Paul from the money she got from her ex husband 😉brbrIn all seriousness, I'm 45 and have been playing for 2 months, and enjoying your content I think something to remember as an aging noob is that no matter what guitar you have you're still gonna sound like crap for a good while, don't fall into the trap of thinking that if you upgrade your 'starter' guitar to something more expensive you're magically gonna play like Hendrix - unfortunately it doesn't work like that
Comment from : Gyika

ngoma
Harley Benton has some pretty decent guitars but also check out the Squier Classic Vibe series - they are an outstanding value If you have $900 to spend you'll want to check out the PRS SE DGT
Comment from : ngoma

Bro I used 13 gage strings and do a vary agresive reverse and strait forward finger tapping the 13 gage are the thickest strings you can buy without going to piano wire or custom strings made for you any way I played that gage from 1992 all the way through 2016 maybe 17 from early teens too midish 40,s and I do,s construction so my hands are a bit beat up but now I use 9,s or 10,s and ill just say it iam getting at least another fuck it I about lied too you and my self me and my dead bass player best friend outside of are band was Losly known in even Southern Mexico as the metal musical marines cause we,d play for any one any were any time cash not nessasairy just for the love of it and iam going to rock intell I die and beyond the grave

Shannon Rhoads
I started with saxophone as a 12 year old Unfortunately, the saxophone my parents could afford was 30 years past its prime, and needed hundreds in repair work After two years in junior high school band as last chair, I gave up I eventually donated the sax-shaped hunk of metal to a charity after realizing I was never going to be able to fix it on my own, but it would get a second lifebrbrI attempted to pick up guitar and bass at different times in my past, but always ended up in money troubles Since I was unable to eat the dang things I would sell 'em off brbrRecently, I resolved those issues, and picked up a very nice used Thunderbird bass a few years ago, but I haven't used it much until recently On the plus side, some new strings and one of them tuner things, and Well, I am still at the 'noise' stage But the noise is in tune! Progress!brbrWay I see it, at 50 I still got half my life to get it right!
Comment from : Shannon Rhoads

Michael Q
My biggest mistake hindsight was spending too much time being technical if u can't play something switch gears Work on understanding how to make the music
Comment from : Michael Q

Matt Matheson
I get around the whole noise issue by having good quality earphones plugged into my practice amp I can practice my strat to my heart's content Even at 3am Nobody in my apartment knows I'm doing it
Comment from : Matt Matheson

Comment from : Pamela K Orr

Knot Sew
I'm no longer a beginner, having started as a whippersnapper at 49 (I'm now 65) For me, a combination of going through Hal Leonard's Guitar Method (Books 1,2,3) and a very few lessons was my beginner phase I'm now jamming with a nice bunch of people regularly- so much fun doing rock and pop from the 50's through the 90's, a few newer tunes and some blues and stage tunes too I loved your video There's one thing I would add: Get out and play with others of your level or slightly above as soon as you've learned to switch between a few chords fairly quickly and can strum fairly consistently My mistake was to wait too long Are you absolutely sure I won't make it big?😄
Comment from : Knot Sew

Zippy Banana
Strings - look at Superslinky, guitars usually come with Slinky (010 on the top)brFingers - it's all Finger strength, using a Computer keyboard is easy because pressing the keys is easy, needs less "hit"brChords - great way to start, can play songs quickly, play along with the musicbrAcoustic- much more forgiving to start
Comment from : Zippy Banana

The Daniel Day Lewis movie you were thinking of was My Left Nut He was really good in Lost, too

wallowallo
absolutely amazing video I started out 8 month ago just after hitting 30 with a squier strat It's very inspirational for people like me watching someone who is a little older than myself starting out with something I wanted to do my whole life but never had the courage to do so My ice breaker has been a german freediver She started freediving in her late 30s and managed to break several world records before she turned 40 She never even planned to do so She just started out to discover something new and kept going because it gave her something good and thats what should be everyones driving force Do things no matter how old you are and do them in a way you get something good out of it Fulfill your life and not your dreams, someday you gonna wake up anyway Going to watch the next part of your journey now because your first video gave me something good

Kevin Edwards
Thanks for the video I'm 56 and have just started guitar I'm still finding it impossible to get my fingers to form chords without considerable effort (and my chord changes are even worse), so it's nice to see that this is something all (or at least most) beginners have to go through!
Comment from : Kevin Edwards

E Church
Wanted to start a lifetime ago, but life is life At 51 I’m learning with my 15 y/o son and I’m hooked I suck, but I’m hooked and having a great time My son got a Taylor acoustic and I got a Martin …now we’re looking at electric guitars and amps There are worse addictions

College of Winterhold
Talking of playing guitar like a pianist the late, great Jeff Healey mastered playing it flat on his lap as his blindness made it almost impossible for him to play standing up Anything is achievable

Your getting better I figured that is 2/3’s of the battle won I like your content, and your sense of humor My biggest gig is on monday the 16th I am going to play happy birthday to my dad Who will be 83? He doesnt even really know i play Oh I only have 5 guitars and 1 bass Cause you know Adult $$ Equals adult toys
Comment from : Old Willys

David Manning
Started about a year ago at 57 The goal was if I could play 10 songs I would be happy Using one of the play along apps has been a great help Because of arthritis in my fingers, there are some chords I will never be able to play correctly so I stick to the 7 or 8 chords I can play I am up to around 100 songs and if you listen close, you may be able to tell what they are I started playing at family gatherings and for friends They still ask me to play, so I guess it’s ok I know I am not going on tour, but as long as I am having fun, I will keep playing Thanks for the video
Comment from : David Manning

Tan Gerine
I used to suffer from finger pain which was diagnosed as arthritis but as I progressed I relaxed my death like grip on the neck and now the pain has pretty much gone It's worth practicing playing as lightly as possible
Comment from : Tan Gerine

Szczypior
I'm considering learning to play any instrument as a matter of self-development I am 35 right now and thought about bass or guitar This video all in all encouraged me to think about it seriously and such small improvements could keep me motivated :)
