Wowthe more I read of these comments in defense of Pete best the person, while totally ignoring his deficiencies as a drummer, it becomes depressing That sort of retro burnishing of the facts implies that those in the Pete camp would have preferred the Beatles to remain a local club act at most, and never have ascended to international world changing stardom Yes, Pete would have held them back to a level of obscurity that would make his defenders akin to the population at large in the movie "Yesterday" Paul would have had a career after the Beatles inevitable split by mid '63, and so long as he and John remained pals, they may have written some tunes that are known today, but the fact isif Pete had not been replaced by Ringo, the Beatles as we know them would NEVER have existed Find the 51 seconds clip of John's comment right here on Youtube if you need to hear it directly and refuse to face facts when listening to Pete's barely acceptable drumming skills brPete should count his lucky stars to have been associated with the biggest entertainment phenomenon of the 20th centurybrand accept that as a drummer, his time as place holder on the kit had reached it's logical conclusion when he was axed

Im a multi instrumentalist and started on drums Im not saying this is the most interesting or intricate drumming but it no way lines up with "he couldnt keep time" Over all i find it solid not particularly interesting but decent enough i can tell why they hired him and kept him around for 2 years

Pete Best didnt know his instrument nor the groove required that comes with a feel for music Very uninspired and almost awkward imo If he had the feel & potential he'd of gotten picked rt up by another band His path in life shows music wasnt a priority for him or he struggled finding his niche and couldnt expand or evolve

Ringo's drumming was much more creative than Pete's, yet with great feel for the song The idea that Ringo was brought in for his personality is ridiculous; he was brought in for his drumming The Decca audition recordings demonstrate that the band wasn't really "The Beatles!" until Ringo joined on drums

This recording shows indirectly what Ringo contributed to the Beatles There is a more pushy 'personality' in Ringo's drumming which pushes their sound forward, making it both choppier and bigger; more dramatic and more difficult to ignore

You can hear Pete Best was a damn good drummer the timing is great What's interesting is the recording level of his drums is clearly too low here doesn't have that punch That's not Best's fault Decca more likely wanting to really feature John's vocals I wonder if Martin was influenced by the Decca recordings too much when talks of sacking Best started? FWIW I think Ringo is a major key to the Beatles success his left handed drum style is super unique and he was very powerful

Pete Best just plays the same 4/4 beat throughout with no fills or dynamic variation Lennon said that this was all he could do and clearly it wasn't enough, particularly when the Beatles started playing more melodic and complex songs

Yeah, as a drummer myself, I can see that this is a great example of why Ringo joining was one of the best things to happen to The Beatles Pete doesn't change here, simply grabbing on to the beat and hoping things will work out Doesn't sound bad by any means, but is pretty ordinary and not at all what a song like this calls for Part of what makes the song work (both in covers and in the original version) is the dynamic shift in the drumming between the verse and chorus brbrThe hits on the tom and sometimes the snare during the singing part of the verses make the shift to the riff between the lyrics as well as the transition to the louder chorus pack a real punch, not to mention the drums hitting the snare in time with the guitar when transitioning back to the verses pack a real punch as well Pete doesn't do any of that at all here, it's almost like he doesn't really know the song and is just hoping that one pattern and fill repeated from start to finish will be enough, not playing off the guitars or anything brbrRingo would nail the song just a few months later, even putting his own little spin on it He brought the ride cymbal in and out for even more dynamic effects, he added all the snare hits and dynamic shifts from the original Motown version and even added his own snare hits that play off the vocals in the verses, which was not done even in the original Barrett Strong version

Pete drums well on this song and does nothing wrong The differences are Pete plays it between "Surf Style" aka Wipe Out (16th note triplets?) and 8th notes (which is a cool mix up) and at a faster tempo compared to Ringo - what Ringo does is keep it at 8th notes and empathises the end of the chorus into the verse on the floor tom and snare but the big thing Ringo does is play on the ride cymbal on the last lot of choruses which 'lifts' the song and opens it up One could argue that Pete was more technical on this song but one could also argue that Ringo was more dynamic with the song

The tempo is too fast In Pete's defense, the reason it's too fast is because of the guitars that started the song The groove isn't there like their recording of it with Ringo Musically, it sounds a little too neurotic & has too much of a "surf" beat Aside from that, The lead vocal by Lennon is great & so are the answer backs by Paul & George
