Rhonda Williams
He's arrogant The professionals on TV say to shop around and get quotes He isn't professional at all I've been doing home renovations and usually get contractors who charge more because I am female and they think that I don't know any better I do not mind paying for quality work but price gaulging is both unethical and illegal It is a buyers market and prerogative to pick and choose If he doesn't like it, oh well

As a contractor too, I give my potential client everything they ask for, brexcept my DNA (but I may if the ask for it :) I really want them to feel comfortable) Sometimes, I just want to see how far they will go
Comment from : Maxwell Harris

Ozzie V
Is a free market, but quoting double for example a floor installation for $4K vs $8K I think is crazy! That’s like you paying for the same car $50K and you replying the buyer… Yes… Is the same car, but mine was produce by double of your workers At the end of the day there is something called market price for everything
Comment from : Ozzie V

Shannon Henson
I've never met an amateur that didn't claim to be an experienced professional

I'm a finish carpenter and woodworker out of Los Angeles, California Been in the trade for 57 years and still active Been watching your videos off and on with pleasure Greatly appreciate your aspirations to always be better and expand the limits of your knowledge and expertise brbrWhen I give an estimate and I run into "give me your best price" I look them directly in the eye and tell them there is only one price and its the price to do the job correctly using the best materials They can lower he price by using cheaper materials but the labor is the labor brbrMy response to "why are your prices are higher than other guys" I guess everyone knows the value of their own work brbrIn closing we have this saying out here amongst the "high enders" that often no one seems to have enough money to do it right, but they always have enough money to do it twicebrbrBest of luck in your career, you are a credit to the trade

I'll admit I was getting qoutes to paint my bedroom and bathroom and do some handyman work and I got about 5 prices ranges from 800 to 2000 and I decided to go with the cheapest one The work is pretty horrible and I find myself redoing everything myself and spending more money and rime

1:34 starts the videobrbr1) “give us your best price because we’re getting other quotes”br2) “why are you so much more than the other guy?”brbrSeems like most of the advice is not to compare contractors to each other or play them against each other I guess not bad advice, but I would also add:brbr3) “You’re doing it wrong, I saw a YouTube video where…”br4) “it’s ok, I’m not in any rush”brbrWhat you should do is ask questions and make sure you understand what they’re doing and why You hired a professional, trust their experience, but don’t let them intimidate you away from the job site and understanding what’s going on in YOUR house Chances are if they’re doing that, or they can’t answer your questions, it’s because they’re Jack leg workers doing shoddy work
Comment from : DrWarBear

I just quoted a guy to build a deck 288 square foot composite deck I told him the materials cost alone and he about shit his pants I said it’s $15k in materials and he said “in American money?!”

Common snowflake there is a reason they call it "business"! The reason why you’re so much higher than other contractors is because you’re trying to get rich with no education and minimal knowledge/experience! If you’re pricing yourself as "premium" you better damn sure be able to do the job better than me, the home owner and I will be very explicit in saying I HAVE NEVER SEEN THAT TO DATE! With an attiude like you have you will be back flipping hamburgers very soon!
Comment from : Meanazhell

Jon Engle
as a home owner, the hardest ones to get bid are the small jobs I've had some truly ridiculous quotes, like 10k to replace a bathtub and $8k-$12k for adding 6 feet of wall and a door to close in an open space I ended up getting those jobs done (well) for $2k and $1500 respectively I actually told one of the guys looking at the second job if he didn't want the job, just say so instead of giving me a stupid high blow-off bid I respect the guys that say "hey, sorry, I can't afford to do this job right now, it's too small" over throwing out huge numbers
Comment from : Jon Engle

yellowshka
We get that question from our customers We feel it's a matter of communication and we try to explain our experience, quality, etc They are free to find a cheaper price And after trying someplace cheaper, many will return to us because they learned they get what they pay for But there's no harm in trying to educate customers because they really don't know the quality and knowledge that you ll provide
Comment from : yellowshka

chris m
In my experience, if you are professional, knowledgeable and are in the price zone, clients will go for your offer Also, cheaper offers usually mean they will add items they 'forgot' to include or are not planning to do all the work the client wants Be honest, straight and professional and put in the price you want You will always have work No one gets all the items they quote for and people who chisel about the quote will be mean once the job starts and will be ultra critical so they are often a-hole customers
Comment from : chris m

1psyurmind
I saw your video and do not agree with what you are saying It is the job of the consumer to ask what they are getting for their money If the contractor can't understand that or seem to be annoyed I think that they are in the wrong business I have had work done on my properties and no contractor does the same quality work I am glad that I don't have you coming to my property's I do not believe in a bargain quote I look for quality and fairness However, you must be very good at what you do because you produced this video

Ben Baller
DUDE! You are dead on! Absolutely true across the board I’m a professional tattoo artist so i deal with this exact type of hassle and guff You hit the nail on the head when you said in your early career, those comments would sway you, but not anymore And that’s because you are worth so much more now and you know it I can tell you also have a line of other clients waiting so it’s no skin off your back! I think on our end as the contractors, it causes a lot of these issues because it does bring out the primal, animalistic, competitive side out of us which makes us more likely to get emotionally driven and spite them Awesome points my man! Do you have any videos from the opposite perspective to show us how you might suggest the client should conduct themselves?
Comment from : Ben Baller

Terry Dawkins
Know your value and demand it…good info"?
Comment from : Terry Dawkins

Captain Alejo
Isn't what you're saying regarding alternate quotes possibly using different materials, or a different team of people, what the question is about? Honestly, if you can't field a question like "why are you more expensive than x" I think that's your loss That is a great opportunity to highlight the value you will provide If a customer is just demanding the lowest price, I get that is a lost cause However, if I ask you to explain what value is included at that price point you should be able to articulate that brbrI'm happy to pay what something is worth, but you as the professional need to explain to me where that value is
Comment from : Captain Alejo

Debra Goree
Ok, I disagree about asking why there's a difference in price People want to know what are the differences in materials I went into a fancy furniture store one time and asked the salesperson why the couch pillow was $40 when I could get one at Walmart for $10 I wasn't being smart I legitimately wanted to know what the difference was and the salesperson got frustrated and didn't know the answer That was poor training on the sales manager's part because there is a big difference in materials used and types of stitching which could cause those differences because you're getting a quality product Maybe you are higher in price because you're giving a higher quality of work people want to know that especially when they're spending thousands and thousands of dollars I once had a room built onto my house which cost me about $30,000 but I do remember getting a quote for $16,000 I did not go with the one for $16,000 because I didn't think that it could have been built for that amount and I didn't want to use inferior products So there you go

Schlumbucket Returns
The moral here is to avoid overpriced contractors When they quote you an absurd price, don't even bother with the "why" they are overpriced Don't ask them why they are overpriced Just move on and don't waste your time with them brbrThe reality is that in business you often don't get what you pay for Don't assume that just because someone is more expensive they will do a better job You really have to scrutinize these contractors to find ones that offer good value And "good value" doesn't mean you go with the cheapest quote, but you go with the contractor that will give you a fair service in exchange for your money
Comment from : Schlumbucket Returns

Andrew Bevan
I can see why contractors would find it annoying for customers to say these things, but he never explained why it's not in the customers interest to say them Especially asking why the price is higher than others I would think a competent contractor who may tend to bid higher than others would welcome the opportunity to justify why it's in the customers interest to go with them instead of just blindly picking the lowest There may actually be a very good explanation that the customer should benefit by knowing
Comment from : Andrew Bevan

Danzo3649
I disagree You need to be ready to educate your customer when they ask those questions and compare your prices to others, instead of just feeling like it's a threat or not wanting to hear them You can't go wrong having thick skin and thinking smart

Third thing would be: do this for me/give me a good price and “I got a lot more work I’d like to talk to you about”
Comment from : Jorge Gonzalez

Brendon Burgin
At the of the day the customer is just trying to get the lowest quote Now I know if a quote is way low be careful, but yeah I agree they don't have to be rude to the contractor either What the wife and I say is simply 'we'll get back to you thanks for having a look for us' I think thats fairly polite
Comment from : Brendon Burgin

Artist Jasmine Mills
As someone who has hired contractors and I have been hired to do artwork as a contractor for installations and I also have had people ask those same questions when I first started doing freelance work- It's not personal The question "Why" are you double the price and Why is your pricing this much or X Y Z is open-ended, So you have the opportunity to sell yourself and explain and be transparent about your work and practices If anyone is thinking its a negative to have someone say these statements to them ITS NOT!! Its an absolute positive! I have made my highest commissions and profits and done my best work from those same people! They simply want you to explain VALUE not the cheapest offer- that's not what most people actually want You will know the crazies that do want only cheap cheap cheap because they WONT ask any questions and they wont tell you anything but bare min People are NOT playing brain games or trying to be witty and witty people don't use that language because they are actually witty Id suggest if anyone wants to learn sales language and how to thrive and you don't have to be a jerk watch a few sales videos and negotiation videos you may learn something Made my job a lot easier and I don't have clients that even ask me that question anymore because now I get return and referrals Its about how you initiate and carry yourself in the beginning too
Comment from : Artist Jasmine Mills

Mimi Ramone
I just plan on having a good canned answer for the questions and answer them with stride Sell your services You’re better than competition because you’re gonna get it done on time, you work with a team, here’s the best quality products are licensed and bonded etc and all customers are gonna get “multiple quotes Sometimes contractors come up come in here I spend time showing them what I want and I never get a damn quote…I wouldn’t consider either of these things a dig to your Abilities Some people want flex their hand in negotiating (dorks!) Some genuinely want to know what the difference is because they don’t know anything about that kind of stuff I wouldn’t take it personally I asked the contractor recently to revise the plan because it didn’t fit in my budget and he pretty much told me that he didn’t have time to go back-and-forth on it and if I didn’t decide based on his vague parameters, That didn’t even indicate a timeframe or full scope as discussed, (heck, I couldn’t even pick the paint color! He chose white Lol) he’d decline my job In the time he took strong-arming me he could’ve simply answered my questions and demonstrated professionalism I wasn’t asking him to bring down price for services rendered I was changing services to exclude painting part of my condo… I wanted them to start ASAP but because I’m not moved out yet they wouldn’t do it because their plan was to spray some cheap Builder grade white paint all over the place, like putting lipstick on a pig and taking it to a prom I’ve many work while I’m home, but these guys? apparently not in their wheelhouse Main reason for all my unfinished home projects… finding reliable, Honest and respectful help is a PITA C’est la vie
Comment from : Mimi Ramone

Andres Gonzalez
I think you right but I also like from a contractor to give me a good warranty of the job like 100 warranty You don’t going to find that around my area any more
Comment from : Andres Gonzalez

handyt butler
I use to have the same experience when people would ask me for a quote and as soon as they said that i simply replied , thanks for the call but im not giving you a quote because i am not the cheapest and im not wasting any more time here Be polite about it but walk away, cheap people like that you can never make happy and you end up donating your time
Comment from : handyt butler

J Sanchez
I was taking bids to paint my house Standard stuff nothing major 1st guy I shit you not came in at 21k for a 1400 sq foot house I was like shit Times have changed A simple google query for the average costs in my area came in at between 5500 and 6500! I went with another guy for 5500 and it all went well But yeah, Eventhough a contractors price is a contractors price it is still incumbent on the homeowner to practice due diligence to understand the market I’m sure the guy for 21 would have done a satisfactory job, sure, but even he knew it was over bid, because he came knocking on my door a week later and came down to 8200 from the original 21k for the same scope of work That’s when I knew he was done for as far as I was concerned
Comment from : J Sanchez

Good info for anyone starting out You get what you pay for Much like I've informed customers and contractors, youre paying for the X amount of experience and the journey it took to get to that point, it's not just as simple of slapping things together

Comment from : Bob Gray

Carlos G
Very good advice Only time I ever question a price is if the contractor is just over quoting me because they don't want the job If it's obviously way too high Also, on the other side of the coin, if I had a dollar for every time Contractor was going to get me an estimate and they ghosted me, I would have a pretty good amount of money lol

To be fair though, there is greedy people in any type of business I have been a carpenter for 11 years and it’s not unfair to gauge the pride someone takes in there work, but it’s the price-chopping mentality that isn’t right
