I'm not against investing in stocks, in fact it's one of my preferred methods of additional incomebrBut consistently selling people on the idea that if they invest in the S&P 500 that they'll make 10 per year indefinitely is very misleading in my opinion It was only a few years ago that the annual average return was only 7-8, but now because of covid and the FED printing some 45 trillion USD everything is inflated to hell and being misrepresented In the following decades we are more likely to see stagnant growth in index funds averaging only 2-3 returns annually vs's the 10+ we have been seeing from the last 3-4yrs brIn short, I'm saying the index funds would not be providing the returns they have without the manipulation and meddling by the FED, and that the returns that people are bragging about index funds netting is only because of the last few years of sharp appreciation (void of real growth)

Sorry to sound very "asian" but why do young americans aim so low when it comes to careers? Everyone wants art or even if its something like teaching, it's school I get the passion element but why not acknowledge yhe trade off between risk and setting yourself up to a very tough financial future? There are just as much interesting and exciting fields that require harder initial education and work but gets relatively the same long term effort for a more stable and comfortable life Aim higher to land somewhere lower But as calen said, i feel like a dick saying this

I don't know if they will see this, especially because it's 2 months old I would suggest they look into medical stuff with kids rather than teaching With a love of kids, physics, good at math and history for chronic illness medical like child life (hospital care), or physical therapy are both amazing careers They have the compassion, empathy needed as well as the educational skills Working with kids is inherently using arts and creativity as well as a bit of performance art no matter what field it's in I have a chronic illness myself and working in medical arenas with kids and I think Toby would be a great fit 😊

Hey, if they like physics, being a physics teacher is a very desirable teacher position But plenty of bigger school districts, especially in Texas do tend have several teachers for the arts brbrTeaching certification, I'd recommend maybe doing alt certification I know for science you can be 7-12 certified or 4-8 certified in, iirc So there's some flexibility there

I couldn't imagine charging my 18 yo kids or niece/nephew rent when they are trying to figure everything out Give them time, expect and help them make the right choice and move in right direction My kids are still young, but as soon as they get into highschool the financial education is coming in hot and I'm going to do everything I can to make sure they aren't spinning their wheels financially until their mid to late 20s like I did

Move to Canada get ur teacher license and get a position in canadas far north remote communities like yukon north west territories ect as the are in need of qualified people in all jobs but as a teacher u can get a starting salary of $130,000 plus other benefits from the gov u get for working in the north as no one wants to most have families and it's minus 30 in winter ect

One thing to note is that if you are not a dependent anymore, your fafsa will be based off of your own taxes This means that you will qualify for more financial aid since it is based on your own income and be able to go to college for cheaper, if not free There are also scholarships and many programs available to help students financially

My high-school art teacher wasn't an artist He loved art though He would give us a vague prompt and let us run with it But also in the Austin area Toby could work for a childcare for 20$ hourly easily with no experience Just needs to shop around but they're hella desperate for teachers It would be a steady schedule with weekends off for side whatever

I'm a teacher in a large urban district in another state Something for this young person to consider is teaching math or science at the middle level and doing an acting club or arts club after school for extra stipend Still leaves room for acting And most public schools have good healthcare and time off that will help with the health issues Another bonus is taking advantage of public service loan forgiveness for working in low income school
