It is yellow journalism like this which has wrecked mainstream media’s credibility Laundering Hoover’s true history is outright deplorable Since CBS danced around the most damning reasons Hoover is justifiably vilified, I’ll point them out Hoover’s role in laying the ground for the 1929 stock market crash didn’t just come from his years as President They ALSO come by way of the instrumental role he played in causing them as Commerce Secretary for the two previous Presidents Hoover literally built the economic house of cards that crashed on every Americans head in 1929 If that wasn’t bad enough, he refused to intervene in that widespread hardship until it was too late to avoid the Great Depression That’s why homeless camps were labeled Hoovervilles The widespread starvation, suffering, and death caused by the Great Depression was ALL caused by Hoover and the robber barons he served over the American people These are the reasons Hoover was a failed President, politician, and man He earned his deplorable legacy and notoriety by his own hand Laundering that history of disgrace is a disservice to the country

Hoover isn’t criticized just for his failed presidency and misguided faith in the broken free market theory he subscribed to in his life He is also criticized because of his instrumental efforts to set the US economy up for failure and the Great Depression What is usually glossed over in these revisionist history pieces surrounding Hoover is that he served as Commerce Secretary for the prior 2 Presidents, putting him at the top of the list of culprits responsible for the 1929 stock market crash and the Great Depression that resulted from his failed leadership brbrI get why his great granddaughter would want you to whitewash his history since it still sullies their family, but Hoover made their family legacy with his poor decisions and they have to live with it too Millions of Americans starved, suffered, and died because of Hoover’s willful mistakes No one should forget that ugly history or allow it to be laundered as they are attempting to do here

You couldn’t tank the US economy in 10 months if you set out to do so The Depression was the culmination of 1920s Republican social and economic policies of the the Coolidge administrations Hoover’s problem rested in his RESPONSE to the Depression Having no precedents to fall back on, he was mentally locked into a traditional laissez fair “hands off” approach That didn’t cut it FDR’s New Deal did not end the Depression, but it helped millions, and there was always the sense that he was trying to use the power of the federal government to fight for ordinary people The irony is that FDR needed to implement MORE deficit spending (as he was forced to in WWII), but he didn’t realize it, and his political opponents bitterly resisted the idea

Remarkable man He and his wife lived in China when he was an engineer and they could speak Chinese I read that sometimes they spoke Chinese in the White House and so others wouldn’t know what they were saying I believe he helped with humanitarian aid during the Second World War also

He saved people starving in Russia There was a drought near the Ural Mountains Hoover saved millions of people who would have starved Lenin had just come into power and didn't give a crap about his own people Hoover convinced Congress to provide the needed money to buy food, before he was president There was PBS American Experience episode about this Herbert's wife was amazing too, I heard she read letters sent to the President and wrote back to people, some people she wrote out small checks from the couple's private accounts, like someone using the money for shoes for a new job (this is during the Great Depression when no one thought to ask for a handout) Can you imagine Nancy Reagan or Hillary Clinton giving out their own money?

As a native Iowan, I grew up being proud that we had produced a president The town I lived in, was only an hour away from his presidential library and all fifth graders got to take a field trip to it Naturally, as a 10 year old, I didn’t understand all the ins and outs of politics, and I didn’t know about his unpopularity I think I would’ve found everything much more interesting at that age if schools would have highlighted his humanitarianism

Americans and Roosevelt didn't blame Hoover solely for the Great Depression but many believed the economic policies of unfettered, unregulated, hands-off capitalism of his republican party were to blame It's a shame Hoover didn't extend his sympathy for Belgians to US WWI veterans and the Bonus Army, sadly not even mentioned here That incident convinced many that Hoover was unsympathetic to their desperate situation Hoover was an intelligent and gifted person but his policy fell short of what was required by such a vast economic disaster
