yea let's spend $10,000 on layers! Yea push all your expensive layer systems! By the time you're done buying 8 pieces of layers you have spent thousands of dollars To high dollar for me Comment from : @capgun56 |

If anyone is wondering about synthetics vs wool base layers, here are the cliff notes of eachbrSynthetics: Quick dryingbrWool: AntimicrobialbrIndependents of cost, wool is generally warmer but not as good at dealing with sweat therefore poly generally better for movingbrbrLots of people use a poly inner layer with a wool outer base/mid layer to take advantage of both Comment from : @tmpace9 |
John's talk here is the gold standard for layering education Comment from : @paul5920 |
1st step: Be a millionaire hahabrOr either broke like me from buying so much SitkabrGot more in the mail! 😅 Comment from : @adohiproductions6506 |
Do you need to get different sizes for something like the static insulation layer to count for all the layers underneath? Comment from : @ronaldhines2058 |
Heated baselayers or vest would eliminate most of the layers if on a day hunt Obviously, not great for backpacking hunts Comment from : @vervi1jw1 |
As an equipment geek, I think this is one of the best explanations I have received in relation to gøretex/vinbram for hunting THANKS 🙂 Comment from : @Mrallankarate |
Really appreciate the info and the intelligent questions from John's interviewer Comment from : @americansafarico |
It would be cool if Sitka was contracted by the US military They make such amazing products! Comment from : @user-jd6vn6gc9h |
Fantastic video, been a fan of Sitka gear fro a couple of years, I appreciate John's advice on how to get the most out of my investment I would love to see him describe a whitetail system Comment from : @jackshoffstall7677 |
Better off learning layering from alpinists or backpackers You sure as shit don’t need 8 layers And for sure don’t need to go broke making every layer Sitka Comment from : @jaredpedersen2436 |
If it’s raining hard enough for you to wear rain gear, 2 things are also true br1) the rain is much louder than your jacketbr2) the animals are bedded, watching and waiting, so maybe you should too Comment from : @wildchild795 |
“System” “technology “ blah blah blah Meanwhile basic woodsmanship and the true hunting spirit is dying Having a basic understanding of layer is cool, and some pieces are necessary but remember, the bottom line and the ONLY thing these companies care about is taking your money There’s guys out there right now that kill and have killed more game in denim jeans and grit than guys head to toe in Sitka/KUIU gear Comment from : @VICSKIM949 |
What temp does this kit work with? I guess this isn’t for sub freezing temps Comment from : @grahammacdonald3191 |
I’m really glad you put out this video, it’s extremely helpful so thank you for that! I do have one question though, if I wear a medium sized base layer will I need to go up in size as I get to the rainwear or is it better to keep the same size all the way through? Comment from : @caidenpfleiger1873 |
8 pieces of total shit Comment from : @cpaoutdoors9926 |
So Question #1 is: why the hell do I need a base layer hoodie and a next layer hoodie How many hoodies do I need? Lol Comment from : @webincomeincome8767 |
Very instructional video, thank you very much Comment from : @marcocubillos9706 |
Great video!! I’ve always wondered about some key principles addressed in this video!! Great explanations!! Thank you! Comment from : @jasoncarlile8294 |
Hold still ya stupid elk, I’m changing my jacket! Comment from : @rockymountainlockpicker9606 |

ND sportsman here The speaker frets over odor but not temperature No 8 piece "system" covers +40° to -40° temp rangebrI have 50+ years of "product testing" synthetic and merino wool base and mid layers in lite, medium, and heavy weight Each has its placebrbrNo evidence here that Sitka's base products are supreme; the 'system' is more generic, especially for base layers Comment from : @billdibrito5305 |
With only a base layer and one pair of pants this guy would likely freeze to death whitetail hunting in Michigan Without another insulation layer on his legs this we be good for like 40 degrees Comment from : @cavanmcconnell33 |
if i wear a xxl jetstream what size stormfront fits over it? Comment from : @matthewhenry8582 |
This is great advice from Mr Barklow, because you can use this 8 piece system in multiple configurations of different clothing, and if you can’t afford Sitka gear or just don’t think it’s necessary to spend over 2 grand on a 8 piece system like this you can still apply this advice and build a system for less money with other cheaper clothing brands Comment from : @MWM92688 |

Second or third layer worn based on windy and/or wet weather is a wind resistant, breathable and water resistant/proof layer such as a jacket or anorak Last layer for me is down/synthetic insulated layer with the previous layer for wind/wet conditions worn over it The pack needs a similar wind/wet layer as well if needed Snow is considered a wet weather element My second/third layer is my 465 ounce DIY heat reflective, breathable, wind and water resistant/proof anorak During dry cold conditions I wear my anorak as the second layer with my alpaca sweater over it In rain & snow I'll wear my anorak over the alpaca sweater I've worn this combination in 36 F degree weather completely comfortable I also made over pants The combination of the anorak and over pants weigh 627 ounces, Comment from : @stuartsteele9984 |
Sitka makes awesome stuff! brJohn may not use his rain gear much but here in the coastal rainforest expecting a dry day is very optimistic, haha I'd be keen to hear about a rain piece that is able to also be durable like Mountain Jacket How much rain can the Mountain Jacket take before it leaks? Maybe it can be main piece for rain? Comment from : @markfraser35 |
Yes the "Contrail", "Mountain" & Timberline Jackets are very close to being the same, only slight mapping difference of insulation varies The Timberline jacket & Pants dont match in insulation amount My favorite is the 90 jacket & pants, I do go to them 90 of the time and the warmth level in each are the same Comment from : @davevann2925 |
Sitka Is the best hunting gear I’ve ever owned As a Whitetail hunter who is motionless in a tree stand with a bow I get cold without movement Hands-down the warmest stuff out therebrI’m not rich brI’m a carpenter/framer brBuy once cry once!brThat’s mybrMotto in life brBuy shit gear buy 3-5 times and your gear is inferior regardless Comment from : @jayonez137 |
Barklow says “take extreme late season off the table” do you have a video where he talks about that time of year? I’m curious what he changes or adds to his system in late season Comment from : @SWF734 |
If it lasted a lifetime I'd spend 2k Comment from : @Eric-bh6ie |
Do u have a video like this for whitetail hunting Comment from : @wesleymartin124 |
I gulped too when he said 8 😂 Comment from : @Theonezechariah |
You guys should do a video like this on the whitetail system Comment from : @brannonarends9595 |
What camo pattern is the first items hanging on the clothes rack behind them? Comment from : @jasoncameron7222 |
Could you do this for Whitetail? Comment from : @matthigdon4809 |
I appreciate this video John is an absolute wealth of knowledge I really need to do an inventory of my gear, and build a true set instead of just buying clothes that I see on deep discountbrI like how your site actually breaks clothing down by types to make it easier to shop Comment from : @TheWVgoodguy22 |
8 pieces? I don’t have 5k? Comment from : @kolsenreed442 |
8 pieces of Sitka ?I don’t have that much equity available in my mortgage 😆😆😆😆 Comment from : @mdog1615 |
Would love to see the same video for whitetail Comment from : @joshlasure3384 |
Thank god the world has someone like Jon B to explain all this! He truly does the best job of dumbing it all down so people like myself can use my clothing system the way it’s designed I wish that I had know this info 30 years ago LOL Comment from : @stephens208 |
Any chance you could do the same video but use waterfowl hunting as the example? Comment from : @ryandalman9355 |
