I'm not here to brag about how much money I made or to whine about how little I earned The goal of this channel is to provide a behind-the-scenes look at what life was like as a professional runner 2015 was a very good year for me, but a bit of an outlier Most year's I made significantly less What other BTS info would you like to hear about? Let me know in the comments below or DM me on Instagram here: wwwinstagramcom/nicksymmonds Comment from : Nick Symmonds Too |

15 percent seems to be the standard rate which is fair I never knew you made so much money If I knew that I would've made a stronger push towards chasing my dream 40k a year would've been my baseline in like 2016 I just didn't believe it could happen Comment from : REZZ BUILDS |

Nick is a good dude and he knows how to cater to his audience but no, 175,000 is not a ton of money I know you’re obliged to say that cause you don’t want someone working at target or super america to get mad that a world class athlete makes money but guess what they do, and actually they should earn much much more brbrMost the world’s population could not handle this job And yes, that’s what it is, a job Nick was a professional athletebrbr99 of the world couldn’t handle the pressure and discipline of performing at a high level and racing against the world’s best brbrAside from that, this is a limited-ass career This isn’t even close to retirement money This isn’t a career where you just get better and earn more over time You have a short prime and you’re effin done brbrSo in the end I wish that nick earned a lot more Folks who make money need to stop justifying it And last, I’m glad he’s an entrepreneur and I hope he’s earned a shit-ton from google and run gum The end Comment from : Best Ever Food Review Show |
He made 350k (before tax, commissions etc) in 2015 Thank me later Comment from : Samuel |
So not much, you sound poor Comment from : MrRickeo |
That's relatively a lot for the take home pay, I meant you can live comfortably by making Net income $150K The only thing is that you can't always make it that much for so many years due to pro athletes can only be at the top for just a few years before your performance winding down or new comers that run faster beat you Comment from : Jay Koo |
When going pro is it off imperative to have the talent level and times that make the professional level to have the money to have when your running on it? Comment from : Your name here |
hi nick: who supported u during those unpaid years? my impression is that without family support or likewise its almost impossible to make it as a pro runner in the western society Comment from : Alexander S |
Really appreciate your candor So helpful for others out there! Wish there were more videos like this for every career path! Comment from : Gynecologist |
As a competitive, but not pro, runner in Colorado from 2003-2005, I made all of $250 You definitely did better than I did! Comment from : Jon Clemence |
Too bad pro ball rookies who immediately show an earning of millions $$ doesn't watch this I believe most think that it's just money in the pocket and go straight to blowing tons of cash, only to be flat broke within a couple years! Comment from : Danny Jacobs |
I love watching men's and women's T&F college, Pro, and Olympics Shows how extremely competitive track & field is compared to pro football or basketball You had to be top 10 in the world to earn +$300,000; while, the last ranked person out the almost 1700 NFL players earns +$600k If you would earn negative $$$ if you were in the 1700th position in T&F trying to make a living at it Appreciate what you do Comment from : mrgold35 |

Getting paid to do for what you love is pretty cool but track and field athletes should make more Also olympians in general should make more Maybe these organisations don't make NBA/NFL/Football level of money but they still make way more percentage wize than they should Comment from : MRTatsaa |
And this guy was the #1 US 800M runner for a bit Imagine what the #10 guy makes Comment from : Roman Kats-Kagan |
The federal tax rate in 2013 for that bracket (184k-398k) was 33 The lower and higher bracket rates were 28 and 35 respectively The Oregon tax rate was 99 for the highest bracket If you were writing things off correctly as an llc, you should have been paying taxes closer to the high 30 range, not 50 Comment from : Dave |
Damn shame that world class runners from sprinters to long distance runners dont make nothing like NBA, NFL, and MLB players it seems like the top 1 of the 1 become millionaires and that is if they become world record holders or gold medalist DAMN F***ING SHAME All that hard and i mean hard work to get paid pennies compared to most professional athletes in the world Comment from : Anthony Perez |
I think the only money I made was a 30 dollar gift certificate Ran decent times over the years 158 at 800 and 32 minute 10 k and 1540 5kAll that training for loosing a ton of money Take in all the entry fees and travel expenses and equipmentGotta be at least 50 to 75 k negative But it is something I love and its always been there Not like a ex wife that takes off and takes your money and spends it on her new car and boyfriend Comment from : CB FIT Runner |

Nick, thanks for sharing that You were one of the top runners in the World and you were making a good living, however I am guessing only about 10-20 of professional runners are making enough to survive If you are not winning major races, or running very elite times or not getting appearance money it must be really hard to survive Comment from : syl pascale |
Just rewatched that race! You are a beast! Comment from : Gary Morrison |

Some of the things you deducted from your gross income to establish your net income are things most of us pay out of our pocket with a normal salary (ie Health insurance, travel, etc) I don't deduct my travel and equipment from my net income as an age grouper Those expenses come out of my net income Comment from : James Burke |
Wow, thought for sure you were going to say that you grossed close to seven figures, really surprised by those amountsbrbrBut you participated in two Olympic Games, and I wouldn't trade that for a billion dollars and I have a pretty strong suspicion you wouldn't either There are some thingsbrthat money just can't buybrbrReally enjoy your channel, keep up the great work! Comment from : Jay Kay |

Hi, How are you being affected by the Covid-19 from a small business perspective? I run my own software consulting company and had to go from LLC to W2 and attach myself to a bigger company just to stay in "business" Also did Ryan Hall let you stay with him on the 3 mile run? Was he toying with you? Lol Comment from : Joe Contreras |
