You think your old I'm in my seventies its easier if you're young but I sing quite well and accompanying it just would be good to have a tune to learn so I could play and sing although I am older I developed a voice through Religion where many singers have been able improve not all its more to do with how you are willing to improve to sing well I am not comparing , Elvis presley I heard used to do 30 minutes a day practice use it or lose can also apply
Comment from : John Randle

Ravex24
Just picked up my first guitar and started learning two weeks ago My goal is to be able to play Tico Tico like Paco De Lucia Idk if that's a goal I'll reach but I'll be happy with as close as I can get

Sailing Ravenwing
Played when young, grew up, got busy and didn't play until I retired in my 60'sbrI still had my old J50 Gibson and I hung it on the wall Doing so motivated me to try playing again because I had to look at it every day and think about what I had lost brThat was almost 4 years agobrNow I play every day, love it and have been taking lessons for over a year brI have done open mic's lately and meeting a ton of fun musical people Initially terrifying, now I look forward to the next one Building my set listbrAbout as much fun as can be had with your clothes on

Things to consider Any arthritis? Do you live in a apartment and your lease you may have ignored state no instruments, I've ran into it Fun y how a blasting stereo is allowed but not a acustic guitar I said screw them and got a small amp and electric and use headphones Most electric keyboard have a headphone jack as well Banjo or bagpipes may get you kicked out or you could take a drive to a location people won't mind or be bothered As for blasting stereos just locate the main electrical box and turn off the breaker

Brilliant video David As a guitar teacher I 100 agree with everything you say I love to teach older pupils (in fact that's the only type of pupil I will take nowadays, no one under 50 and preferably retired folk) but the most common thing I hear before I start teaching them is "Am I too old to start" No, I've never found anyone "too old" and yes the life experience side of things is massively important, and the joy it gives when someone plays a song, or a solo, or a riff they love for the first time is amazing!

Kenneth M
Such great advice A lot of wisdom being dished up Eat it up (Thanks David!)
Comment from : Kenneth M

Kenneth M
I started last year at 69 (after a 53 year lay off) LOL Didn't have a lot of guitar playing ability when I was 16, but a ton of confidence, and actually had my own band and got Paid! Anyway, learned a ton during these last 10 months Amazing journey (My advice? Pentatonic scales, major scales, Argeggios, scales in thirds (where I am now) Also, free plug to Desi Serna
Comment from : Kenneth M

TribalScience
This video and all the comments really make me feel better about being a complete beginner at 32 I definitely fall into unhealthy comparisons because I feel like I have a lot to "say" on the guitar but I don't have the skill to say it yet Thank you

Eddie Connor
I am 77 just started playing

I thought I was, I am 45, but I still do it

Il riccio paracadutista (airborn hedgehog)
David you're absolutely right and everybody should watch this video!brThis kind of question is purely due to fear of confrontation and unhealthy comparisons with othersbrLet's think about it rationally: most of the skills and knowledge we develop in life is made during adulthood (university, work skills, and so on)brI mean, if an adult can become - for example - a surgeon, why can't he learn to play an instrument?brIt's all down to time and dedication
Comment from : Il riccio paracadutista (airborn hedgehog)

Rumplestilskin
I am 90 years old I just started playing the guitar best thing ever
Comment from : Rumplestilskin

ROCK THE CLOCK

Daniel James
I am 48 years old and now I am learning to play I always loved music always did since the age of 5 years old listening to my Mum and Dad's vinyl from led zeppelin to T Rex, Carole King and etc I always was fascinated with Les Paul Gibson, who one of my favorite guitars plays Jimmy Page For now I bought the ec -1000 ltd to learn from It was reasonable price and so versatile guitar and most importantly I like the way it feels to learn from It was always my dream to play Nothing stopping me now 🤘brDown the line, I will buy sun burst Las Paul

I started when I was eight For years it was just me and the minor pentatonic I had a pretty good ear but that was it Music lessons was for rich kids But now at 62 with all of these masterful youtubers, like David, sharing their knowledge I'm like a kid in a candy store I feel like I'm learning for the first time correctly

Bad botch Down
For me at 58 I have not found it's was difficult because of age its difficult when your hands are relatively small with shorts fingers and less muscles in arms and hands

i wise man once said: you're never too old to rock & roll if you're too young to diebrbri'm 57 and have just started learning my goal is for a covid friendly activity to pass time and try to keep my mind sharp even the simple things go very slowly sometimes it takes hours just to play one of those simple things can i get ok as a guitar player if i keep working at it dilligently? probably not, but we'll see

Troy Jenkins
There is no escaping the fact that "for me" I, had much more fun when I was in my 20' and 30's jamming with my band and playing shows I was 10 feet tall and bullet proof so getting home at 1am after a show and getting up at 6:30 am and going to work with my ears ringing and sporting a hell of a hangover never slowed me down Depending on who you are as a person will determine how much you get out of it as you get older but, any accomplished player will tell you that you never stop learning until the day you stop playing, so, YOU ARE NEVER TOO OLD TO START PLAYING! As long as you have patience and a deep desire to be a guitarist, that's all you need
Comment from : Troy Jenkins

rocknrallsoul94 Rockero

Joe Urbanowski
Hey David! I’m 67 and a retired carpenter… a helluva carpenter… but I’ve conquered that and only work part time now… I also played bass in cover bands for many years, since high school… top 40,Motown,metal,originals… and before my recent 10 year void of not playing anything, I bought a Telecaster ( and a couple other axes sincelol) and decided I want to be able to reach people’s hearts by learning electric guitar…brI’m getting a little better in spurts, but I don’t have a clear direction… UTube can be great… but I’m finding out it’s an overgrown jungle…!!!brI’m considering you as a teacher ( and others too…I wouldn’t kid you) brWhom ever I go with will have to have at least an occasional “one on one’” Skype/Zoom lesson to point out my own mistakes, etc…brDo you have that kind of interaction in your courses?brI’m drowning out here, man…! Lol…br“You’re only as old as you wanna be”… My motto✌🏼😎brWow! That was really long! Sorryand Thanks!
Comment from : Joe Urbanowski

Bill Proctor
I'm 68 years old and will be getting my guitar next week Always wanted to learn but was always taking care of other things It's like starting painting Doodled all my life Finally started painting in my 30's Sold 5 paintings Love music and determined to learn Wish me luck

I'm 56 and just hit a level of enjoyable blissAfter living like a hermit for 8 years It takes longer the older you get due to neurons in the brain And finger issues diabetes nerve shit I figured I'm going to play halfway decent before I kick the bucket!
Comment from : laserus3333

Bones
I’m 24, been playing on and off since 23 I want to play professionally some day, I hope I can get there Most artists I look up to started playing in their teenage years and it’s kind of disheartening, like it’s too late for me to make this dream happen Seeing some people in the comments who started way later than me and still managed to do it is really encouraging, thanks for sharing your stories :’)
Comment from : Bones

Italian Baboon
advantage of older people is BUDGETTTTTT !! lol

Glenn Krzeminski
Started at 26 It was a big moment when I realized I’ve been playing more years than I haven’tbrHere are my best tips:br1 Buy a stand and put it in your room If you pack your axe in its case it’ll be 15 years before you touch it againbr2 Don’t ignore theory Don’t even call it theory It’s simply guitar playingbr3 If you want to understand something, force yourself to practice it I wasted decades waiting to get a “feel” for certain scales-as if in time they would all reveal themselves to me It wasn’t until I practiced them that I developed a feel for them Practice today what you want to be good at tomorrow More practicing, less noodling
Comment from : Glenn Krzeminski

NiakaiN
Never too old to start But some of you guys(and gals) with arthritis might want to invest in a three quarters guitar instead of a full sized It's still a guitar but a little smaller and better for children and people who dont have the strength and flexibility in their hands needed for some of the harder techniquesbrbrbrJust food for thought
Comment from : NiakaiN

8-bit Steve
One of my biggest regrets is never learning to play the guitar, I'm in my late 50's now and it's too late for me, but I would encourage people to go for it if they are younger and want to learn, don't wait!
Comment from : 8-bit Steve

Sullivern

I am 51 and 3 mos ago my 13 yr old daughter wanted an electric guitar She ended up with a used epi ls studio luckily since I knew NOTHING about guitars at the time 3 mos later we have one accoustic, the less paul, an upgraded squire strat, a wicked Tagima HSH(hotrail) set up with a trem and single coil switch for the bridge AND a semi-hollow body Grote (HH) on the the way (most expensive was $400) I can now address neck issues (fret leveling sanding and polishing, nut replacement), upgrade tuners, and soon will be replacing pots and switches (I work on my own car and build computers and this stuff is FAR easier than both of those) I absolutely love it oh yeah, 3 amps and a distortion pedal too I caught the bug YOU ARE EVER TOO OLD
Comment from : Courtney

Bucket Of Noises
Exactly!! I had several attempts, but I was frustrated by those videos showing 12 years old kinds shredding I even went in a guitars store once and when I put my hands on a guitar a teenager was just ripping on some taping licks So I went home brBasically two things happened more or less in the same time: my friend send me to his guitar lesson because the session was paid and he couldn't make it, and I read "Guitar Zero" by Gary Marcus Now, seven years later, I cannot live without a guitarbrThank you for approaching this topic

This video says so much to me, it's saved in my favorites, liked and subscribedbrbrI am on my 4th attempt at learningbrThis time around I'm trying my best not to become obsessed and anxious but to relax and have funbrFirst attempt when I was about 20 had a great teacher he was so happy with my progress but I burned out by the time we were doing chord inversions up and down the neck, last time about 4 years ago I was practicing 2-3 hours per daybrDid that for about 6 months using Troy Stetinas method Here I go again at 52 years old starting again hopefully a little wiser and a lot more successful
Comment from : beaglegod1

Niki Bronson
I literally just want to be able to jam out like the people in Parliament Funkadelic One day and that's like really all I want to ever be able to do with the guitar just have that level of freedom and dexterity and confidence in my playing and I feel like I'm already so far behind in that it's impossible for me to do that because I'm 22 and I didn't start playing the guitar when I was 13 and my mom had bought me a guitar and all I learned how to play with Ode to Joy because I thought it was too difficult I guess seeing some of these comments makes me a little bit more relieved but at the same time I just feel like maybe I'm past my Prime I don't know
Comment from : Niki Bronson

Nicholas Colding
Well I'm 50 and brand new to guitar One step at a time

USA
Very good info & advice! I always feel I wouldn't want the magical ability to play like any other famous person I'd want my own way who knows I may be better than I ever imagined Not limiting myself is key I've played off and on for many years Got ok and had job or time constraints Now I'm 54 and I really need to do this! At my own pace but still not put it down
Comment from : USA

BronzDano

If you're seriously considering learning the guitar on your own, I would suggest you to check out this post: soundstarterscom/how-hard-is-it-to-learn-guitar-on-your-own/ brI have actually summarized the most common problems that can be encountered when not having a guitar teacher (and provided the solutions for them)

EmE Me
As long as one is realistic to the levels they can achieve and know their own limitations and potential, their is no boundary to age in learning Frustration at any age kills learning more than the age of the budding guitarist
Comment from : EmE Me

Maura Shannon
Excellent advice I am about to start learning guitar at age 68

Inspiring! Thx! 1mo into learning ukulele at 43 and loving it Maybe try guitar someday
Comment from : Marc DeVincentis

8h
I think what I find discouraging is that the older you are, it's typically more difficult to learn things I really wish I started when was young because now, knowing nothing about guitar, I see guys with like 4 fingers all on different strings and easily calling out the notes and sequences, and its a bit daunting
Comment from : 8h

T Bizzy
I've been putting off picking up a guitar for well over 35 years I decided it's time now that I see my balance is so off I have no chance of ever getting back to where I was in freestyle bmx, I guess 52 is too late for returning, at least the guitar isn't going to give my ol lady nearly the worry as me on the haro sport in the bowl My Spark practice amp gets delivered tomorrow :)

Hanzo Hasashi
Started at age 2 been playing ever since I’m 98 and still rocking On a serious note I first started playing guitar at around age 14, learned some tabs could play some songs but never committed to it I’m 31 getting back into it hoping to finish what I started as a more mature disciplined person When I was a kid I was super lazy, not productive, hated learning What I’m saying is it’s not when you started but the time you put into it None of us are likely gonna be the next Hendrix so just learn as much as you can when you can and shred
Comment from : Hanzo Hasashi

Sean Flanagan
I’m 31 all my friends have played since they were kids But after 3 years of learning I’m not that far off honestly This video hit the feels though
