I love this topic For the last few years-I am late middle aged- I have been living frugally and cheaply My sister says I am not cheap, but I live cheaply Tryingbr to exist in smaller spaces, my mantra is If I don't need it, I don't have space for it, I don't want it! Comment from : David Leigh |

On the subject of vulnerability: a fellow colleague described her experience of being cut off by flood waters for 2 days without electricity The local supermarket had to be stocked via helicopter and all refrigerated items went "off" She amazed how everybody left their McMansions and helped each other out and spent a lot of time hanging around in the streets chatting One of the kids yelled out, after the two days, "Hey the electricity is back on!" and everybody disappeared and community disappeared again Comment from : Ruth Cornforth |

I love this lady bhugs/b Though I knew everything she has stated here a long time ago, I can't help but to continue to learn more ideas from her and her husband on saving money in their books and other programs People like her are such inspirational individuals I'm learning to grow my own food with help from my dad, I had always had pets particularly chickens for their eggs, I would donate unwanted items or place them in recycling programs, and most important never allow pop-culture and modern consumerism to distract you what is truly important in lifebrbrI was always like this as a child, but as an adult I lost my way somehow I think I allowed the materialistic men and women around me get to me, these include those closest to me I found my way again after a huge flood in my house I was upset at first about the flood that had happened a few months ago, but after a week or so I am so glad it had occurred It forced me to get inspired by my youth I was never a materialist child I usually asked for books or things that forced me to be creative and gain knowledge I was such a child of nature, usually outside exploring and connecting with that system I barely played indoor or watching tv and such never cared for the human world with its superficial and impractical ideals of self worth, worse still its ideals on the worth of others I wanted to be a Paleontologist, Herpetologist or something that made me be close to nature, away from civilization and vain peoplebrbrGod, society and even some members of ones own family are such a bitches, deceiving one to think that he or she will gain respect, love and care from others with material goods and wealth Boy I'm so glad to have find my that child again I needed my younger self to kick my ass right and asked "Who the fuck are you? You're not me? You can't be As an adult, I would be somewhere in New Mexico, Utah, China, or Sri Lanka somewhere cooler than this shit hole, looking for fossils" LOL I think a lot of adults would have their asses kicked by their childhood selves Maybe after I finish passing my medical exam, I'll go back to re-reading those dinosaur books and getting back to my childhood interests and roots Those in my life who disapprove are going to have to deal with itbrbrI'm so happy to come across people like Vicki Robin for redirecting me back to my true self, back to who I was before being exposed to the public world, before hanging around superficial stuck up people (I'm still washing off that revolting odor), and back to my old ideals It will be hard to go back to my original childhood view of the world, which is much like that of a nihilist, but at least I don't sweat the small stuff such as obsessing over what to wear and look like, what I lack or not I'm actually getting rid of more than obtaining and strangely the less things I own that happier I'm becoming I'm just keeping what I really need and like My younger self would be proud of me on that aspect She still hasn't forgiven me for giving up on Paleontology Maybe I'll gain a degree in Educating Biology, by the meantime though I'll stick to learning "Voluntary Simplicity" and teach it to my students (I teach adults and kids with disabilities, people who need guidance with basic life skills and they will benefit a lot from a voluntary simplicity approach)brbrThank you for posting this delightful and insightful video and sharing it with us all So many people need this, not just for those who need guidance, but also those of us who need a reminder and continued inspiration to keep doing what we are doing Peace be Comment from : Yusiley Sierra |

When the kids grew up & moved away, we scaled down to a smaller home - got a ford fucus as aposed to a comfortable full sized vehicle - Our leaving a greener footprint What is there to invest in?
At 55 I am at a loss on where to start - or how? Any suggestions???Thx Comment from : 009kronos |

I agree about the outdated suggestion of bonds It's what worked when Joe Dominguez was doing his seminars on Financial Independence, but not still true when we did his tape seminar in 1989, and sure not true now!
We found the same thing with credit cards, so have simplified down to a checking account (w/debit card) -- which has a nice side benefit of reducing expenses for our natural foods coop (and other merchants too) Comment from : peakmoment |

Yes, research has shown that money does bring happiness up to a certain point I don't think the message of this video, however, was that money doesn't make you happy It's that many people expect that things they buy will bring them more happiness when ll it does is usually land them in debt I highly recommend reading her book "Your Money or Your Life" Its purpose is to transform your relationship with money - not live completely without it Comment from : MiranUT |
|
I was already living fairly simply, but read "Your Money or Your Life" (10 years ago) It7a a great book! The systematic steps of tracking money flow and work are awesome! It was shocking to see how using a credit card (at one store) to get points - even paying it off at the end of each month - inflated my lifestyle Cut that out and the savings came much easier! This was a great refresher! Thanks!
The only outdated info in the version I read was buying gov bonds Negative interest rates now Comment from : MiranUT |

took me half a life time to find that most material items are useless There is really very little one needs to be happy wish i would have realized this at a younger age Now our Planet is very sick from our over consumption Comment from : larz hillbot |

You're absolutely right and i'm sure that people with similar understandings as you are also interested in freeing themselves from a money focused life Comment from : danny boy |
|
@summondadrummin, Totally agree -- we need to replace not only debt-based money system, but also industrial (corporate) capitalism whose premise is to extract more planet into stuff as quickly as possible for short-term gain I think it's not just the middle class that'll need to understand this -- but the wealthy elite, the 1 who own the 40 or more (and are in control) Comment from : peakmoment |
|
This perspective will not remedy the debt and interest based creation of currency which is driving civilization into a flurry of activity much of it wasteful and wrecking the environment Sooner or later we'll need a new foundation for economics and a middle class which understands the necessity for this Comment from : summondadrummin |
|
congrats:
Somebody has need , somebody will meet them - you evented the capitalism all new
Just a minor tip: Make an exchange so i can swap some terra for doller and all is good! Comment from : MrElektrolyt |

I actually took this one step ferther and went a few months with out spending any money I only spent money on food, bills and gas to get to work No eating out, or spending money It was really an eye opener to see how much money I saved at the end of the few months I did it for I also noticed more of my bills were getting paid off It also made me feel how lucky I was, many people have to live with out the extras and are suffering Comment from : YUM YUM, MICHELE COOKS |
