I have two graduates working in our municipal wastewater labbrThey started at about $20/hr after working fill in jobs in food service and retailbrThere are no lay offs, we have the usual benefits that come with government jobsbrWe do get raises and there is a very limited potential for advancementbrThis is not something you want to take on a college debt for Comment from : gmwwc |

I got a degree in Geography which I actually would recommend for people interested in environmental jobs Geography is very flexible and can lead to jobs in tech, conservation, or even policy/urban planning The most important thing I can recommend for anyone interested in environmental work is to develop skills in GIS GIS is always a marketable skill and highly sought after giving you a solid back up plan that pays well should finding a solid environmental job be difficult Comment from : Joe Lewis |

I have a bachelor’s in Environmental Studies I work in an office as an environmental specialist I’m finishing up an Environmental Science PhD I’ll be doing lab work with this and do for my thesis If you like office work, do studies If you like studying physical science and getting into the field, do science That’s pretty much what it was boiled down to me as Environmental science is broadly applicable to other fields of science but ultimately, that field has to involve toxicology and human impact It just depends what you want to do Comment from : Hannah Christine |
|
I have a bs in environmental studies with a minor in history While I don't have a lot of science experience I have held and been offered chemistry positions The degree definitely gets you in the door I realized I don't like working in the lab, however, haha I know now that I preferred field work and so that's what I do now Comment from : Zack |

About to finish my BS in Environmental Science and I would definitely advise just majoring in a hard science (Biology/Chemistry), or something like oceanography if you are interested in the marine environment Because it is an interdisciplinary science, you learn tidbits from a large range of different subjects, but never enough to offer a meaningful understanding of any of them The job offers I have received have been lack luster, the salary at around 35k, the majority of the work being BOD's or other meaningless tasks anybody could do off the street Having a strong background in chemistry or biology would allow you to understand how pollution or other human factors effect an ecosystem than 3-5 chemistry/biology courses you would get out of an environmental science degree Comment from : C C |

Environment sciences interests me but I really don’t feel like putting in $50 thousands into debt I just would rather learn it myself sadly no matter how much I know about the ecology and ph levels and the biodiversity of these soils no one would hire me because I don’t have a certificate saying I studied Comment from : Service Not Found |

Great information overall As someone who is in an Environmental Engineering program, with friends in Environmental Studies: I want to say Environmental Studies is not a science degree like you say at 2:10 It may include some base science courses, but there are other geoscience, earth science, or environmental science degrees that are more focused on the science courses brEnvironmental studies is more of a social science degree and usually focuses more on sustainability, international development, geography, and economics, and maybe policy as opposed to the env, science degrees, so you probably won't become an environmental scientist with this degree Comment from : Ben Adams |

Just wanted to add to the transferable skills, I’m currently doing an environmental science degree and it has a huge focus on statistics and data analytics, and also gives you the experience of using multiple statistical software etc If you know how to market yourself right these skills can help you get into many different industries I’m going down the environmental finance route and managed to get a summer internship with a global financial institution despite not having a business or finance background So for anyone contemplating this degree, there are other options other than field work and consultancy, I’ve also had offers for business analytics and marketing positions so don’t be afraid to try for positions outside your discipline :) Comment from : Rachel B |

Hey Shane, could you make a video about Economics vs Business please? Thank you 😊 Comment from : bellamybug |

For people who want to help the environment and feel like this degree is the only path - it definitely isn't! Look up local environmental engineering programs, or programs in adjacent sciences like physics, chemistry, renewable energy and tech There are a lot of different talents needed in environment-related industries, thr important part isnt what the degree is but how much you want to contribute with your own skillset I'm a computer engineering major that wants to work in a company that will make a positive impact for the environment Comment from : firemario876 |
