You look like you need a JCM 800 Do it Who cares if you can't justify it Comment from : @cali4tune |
I agree 💯 with all your choices I'm a guitarist who played all through 80s and 90s and jcm800 was go to amp forever until the 5150 came out! Both incredible I could spend the money for the soldano even though it's sounds great but between those 2 amp didn't really have the need 🤘🤘 Comment from : @jimmyjames7946 |
Rivera designed Fenders Comment from : @rnrsteev |

I have a 1974ish(?) Bassman head (we couldn’t really confirm the year) that I took to a gentleman locally for Blackface retrospec Absolutely the best amp I’ve ever owned Purchased used for only $750 Just goes to show you that some of these things aren’t as unaffordable as they might seem To your point though, Twin Reverbs & JCM800s are easily the two loudest amplifiers I’ve ever been near The JCM800 at about 7 could be heard down the block Comment from : @blondo1099 |
You are so right about the fender twin I used one for a backline and sounded fabulous 😎🎸 Comment from : @mikecruise6991 |
We all have our favorites Not going to mention mine here Good video buddy You mentioned a lot of great amps Great job man 😎👍👋👋🎸🎸 Comment from : @mikestroud9969 |

Worst ever was a peavey 45 single 12 amp it was free but had no tone at all even a zoom 606 couldn't help it Comment from : @slabdaddywcf |
I've had a lot of vintage amps since I've been playing for 50 + years This is a really good list I had a really nice 59 Bassman and I have to say it's probably the best sounding Blues amp ever But I currently have two fender Supersonics and they're definitely my second favorite of all time They're just so versatile they'll do anything If you get a chance to get one grab it you won't be disappointed Comment from : @Dan-gn2xo |
Fender Super Champ❤️ Comment from : @freakouttent4996 |
1959 seems to be the golden year for A Lot of gear Comment from : @IndyRockStar |
My favorite is the JCM800 both the 2203 and 4210 I finally have both The next amp I'm buying is the 1959 Hand wire (68 Super Lead reissue) Comment from : @IndyRockStar |
Should have put on an uncle Fester costume Comment from : @flintdavis2 |
Hmm… fair enough I wouldn’t have the exact same choices, but I see why you picked them I would only have couple change from your list like you mentioned, maybe the VH4 instead of Herbert, or maybe even more courageous and go for the new VHX that can have both Herbert and VH4 circuits and more Also, I would include a Mesa Boogie I like the Mark V, but if we really need to pick a legendary, I think it would be the Mark IIC+ And maybe, just for the “Legendary status”, I would throw the whole Dumble ODS… even if there was multiple versions of that amp But it was replicated by many builder and it’s been used by a lot of guitarists To include my choices instead of yours, I would probably removed the Fender Sonic because it’s a great amp, sure, but it’s not Legendary… IMHO And I’m not sure about the Orange choice… but again, I’m not super familiar to how popular they were (contrary to Fender Bassman, Vox AC30, Plexi and other SLO, Mesa Dual Rec, etc…) So I didn’t count and it might be a Top 13 or even Top 14, but hey, you got the point ;) Comment from : @Spidouz |
totally predictable choices, you will believe anything such is your programming by the advertising media, your mind is closed to anything beyond your processed conditioning Very sad Comment from : @andrewreynolds2647 |
Excellent videonever mind these old bitter nay sayers and haters brokeep your videos comin Comment from : @rickgriego2844 |
Thank you Robert I completely agree with your list although there are some of those amps I only know by hearing or saying but not self-experience I would personally add the Ampeg Reverbrocket even though it's not that often talked about and it's also a much smaller amp (still 30w octal-tube preamp, full tube amp in the size of a Roland Cube 😲) This had one of the best tones I've ever heard (oh and that reverb and vibrato channelmaan😍 a one of kind little amp Imo) Kinda expected one Rivera to be on the liste One day, you'll come by your JCM800 👍 Make it happen brobrI really dig listening you go through all of those mythic amps! Very inspiring and bringing good memories too Keep rocking mate! Hugs from Belgium 🤝 Comment from : @RenoLaringo |
Dual Rectum Fryer was NOT a mistake you're great at deadpan🤣🤣🤣 Comment from : @videotrexx |
What about the Marshall jvm? Comment from : @josemaali1285 |
Awesome list a few Fenders, an Orange, 2 Marshalls, 2 Peavys, a Mesa/Boogie, a Soldono, a Deizal, a Randall, a Roland, and a Vox all of those amps are on my must haves list for amplifiers because they sound great but I'm a little surprised Maestro, and Frenandase aren't on this list because they sound amazing and like the JCM 800 they're one trick ponies but what a trick they've got Comment from : @charlesrubitschung7592 |
Finally a not braindead list Comment from : @leonn9291 |
Your list isn't that sensible Comment from : @chebrneck |
I really like this list but also believe Hi Watt should have been included I couldn't agree more with Fender twin and Marshall Jcm 800The twin sound has been described as throaty hard to describe what that means but they really do have their own sound If you hear a Marshall in a big enough space you say to yourself, I want that sound Comment from : @johnmaves4763 |
dumble overdrive special? Comment from : @asd8654 |
O fender super reverb tem os alto falantes alnico do bassman junto com a versatilidade do amplificador do deluxe reverb E ainda é bem mais barato! Comment from : @davilealsilveiradacosta9606 |
Great calls on both the Vox and Roland Those Rolands are soooo smooooth Regarding Fender, basically anything made before 1979 rocks! The Twin, however, is the most versatile Comment from : @juno4494 |
Fender Twin is the worst classic amp they ever made JP never used one and Ace used a Fender Harvard mic'd up Comment from : @kirkdahnke |
Fender Super-Sonic was a surprise entry that I agree with The clean sound is phenomenal Comment from : @christopherkahn6522 |
Guitarist Denis Taaffe compared the Crate G40C to the Roland JC-120 Have you tried this Crate amp and what's your opinion? Comment from : @Netriderceo |
Great information as always, I like the Roland jazz 120H its the rare head , I'm looking for one to own (anybody) , back in the 80s my friend had one and I really loved it !!!!!!! Robert any thoughts on it Sir??? Comment from : @MrNumber1gator |
I can tell you from my personal experience, that a blackface Twin Reverb will definitely sound louder than even a JCM 800 half stack I played in a Country Rock band and the Marshall guy was always whining about my Twin drowning him out The Marshall JCM 800 is the GOAT Comment from : @samboggs3499 |
You didn't mention the fender vibro kingbrIt kills all the clean amps on your list Comment from : @motokev2727 |
Mesa Boogie Dual Rectum Fryer bowled me over It's probably a common joke but I hadn't heard it before Comment from : @billwhite9703 |
93' Blues Deluxe with my 1980 Les Paul Deluxe is a tone marriage Comment from : @imaginenation3280 |
Surprised the jcm900 wasn't on thereI always liked the jcm2000s Comment from : @fretboy90 |
I'm sorry but as a Fender fan, you lost me at the Super Sonic that amp is a super shitpile Comment from : @HarlanHarvey76 |
Love to see a vid of your fav gutairs that you have owned or played Comment from : @brownsfanlarry1340 |
No, the super-sonic has no business on this list In fact I disagree with half your list, as there are more worthy amps to put on this list The Mesa Mark IIC+ would have been better than the Mark V The V is great but it doesn't match the IIC+ in that mode And the Marshall list can not be made without the JTM45 I prefer Superleads but the legend that is the JTM45 can not be overstated Comment from : @Turboy65 |
Agree about Marshall I had two 4010 combos back in 1986 playing Stevie ray stuff I regret to this day for selling them , all tube kick arse, 50 watt all tube blues rock amps Comment from : @alexpazman6440 |
Sorry, but any list of the greatest guitar amps ever without the Ampeg V-4 near or at the top is bogus Comment from : @paulmenkens5997 |
Ya thats what I would pick too good 👍 job Comment from : @christopherreed2694 |

How does one find out what amps players use? They never list that info on liner notes or Wikipedia… that I can find that is Comment from : @muusicman2010 |
JCM800 and a Roland chorus with a AB switchbest of both worlds Comment from : @dappawap |
I prefer Twin over Delux finding that the the volume if Felux gets loud too fast as you turn up the volume Comment from : @dappawap |
How much is a January 1975 Peavey vintage amp worth? Just curious if anyone knew, thanks Comment from : @kdub9918 |
Vote all democrats out in 2022 and 2024 Comment from : @johnnylightning1967 |
Still play my 80s jazz chorus You can use a classic fuzz or mxr distortion plus with the amp distortion Now you can use preamp modeling Comment from : @taunoctua245 |
What do you know about electronics engineering? To your credit you stated, it is just your opinion and not based on sound engineering practice! Opinions have little merit!! I don't need some one to tell me how good a amplifier performed,I can judge that for myself! I think most person's would agree!! Comment from : @RaulHernandez-lg5nw |
I've owned a ton f AC30s and there's nothing wrong with the Chinese versions The English-made boxes are poorly built and the electronics are crap Don't drink the cool-aid Comment from : @BlindTom61 |
You left out the Soldano SLO 30 and SLO 100!! Otherwise, a great video!! Comment from : @turbinexman |
Im debating with myself if I should get a Marshall 1959HW, but do you know of any good and relatively cheap attenuators? I can tolerate more than bedroom levels, but not a lot more Comment from : @Thecoolman1 |
Marshall 800! 🤔😳🥱 Comment from : @silviopimentel7247 |

What do you think of the Schecter Hellwin amp? Comment from : @volksweegan2784 |
Is it just me or are Orange amps the worst sounding I’ve never heard and amp or a cab from them sound good Even great bands that play through them…it’s like I can tell that it’s a Orange amp and I hate it lol Comment from : @KonwTheTrut |
I honestly didn’t know about the Eddie/Soldano connection Comment from : @KonwTheTrut |

I play though a 1959 Fender Bassman and a 1959 Les PaulbrAh crap, I just woke up Comment from : @robertwillett4122 |
Questionable list I’ve had a few on your list that aren’t as great as a lot of people think The Herbert…not that great I bought into the hype, dropped some serious coin, and was not that impressed at all Comment from : @markhorowitz25 |
I just recently discovered your channel, and will follow it with interest What I noted is the complete absence of Hughes & Kettner amps in your lists I find several of them really good amps, both in the solid state/Mosfet and in the tube department Is there a reason for the strict no-mentioning? Comment from : @frankmaeder4358 |
I had a super sonic 22 "Oange Crush" and traded it for a super reverb ( One of my terribly regrettable decisions made while still on drugs) I couldn't sound bad through that amp It gets attention for the cascading gain stages, but as I prefer to have a clean tone that dirties up when you dig in This had that in spades It was a limited edition and I'll never probably have another, so that is my one material possession that I mourn Comment from : @charlesw4576 |
They are everywhere $20 if lucky buy it Comment from : @bobravenscraft5376 |
If you only have couple bucks Fender 15 practice amp Can't be beat for the $$$ Comment from : @bobravenscraft5376 |
BASSMAN CHANGED ROCK Comment from : @bobravenscraft5376 |
EVH Said he used Baseman w Marshal cabinets To save the Marshall heads HE BLOWS EM Comment from : @bobravenscraft5376 |
i was briefly without an amp in the early 1980s for my 1976 Ibanez 2661 Les Paul, but my buddy always had something i could play through, so it was no emergencybrOne afternoon i got to his place, and all he had was a Fender Bassman available for me About 10 minutes into playing my 6-string through it, i was in love!brThat Fender Bassman was incapable of playing muddy, so my low strings were very well-defined The higher notes carried through clearly and with emphasisbrI could not believe what i was hearing, it was SO GOOD! brbrI'm glad it made your list! Comment from : @barnabywilde374 |
The JCM 800 is a legendary amp, and I don't disagree with it being number one Comment from : @Mistertbones |
Robert, Thanks to you, I've found the perfect clean Combo Amp I've been looking for with the Roland Jazz Chorus JC-120 I've spent hours searching and cannot find the answer to this question anywhere You have given me expert and valuable advice and information about what to do and how to do it in the past, so I think you are one of two people that will not only give me the time of day, but answer my question honestly (not giving me a blow-off answer) and the other one did not review the JC-120 The Line Out jacks on the back of the JC-120 Can they be connected to External Speaker Cabs!?!?!? I ask because if they canI think that's great!!! You can achieve Stereo sound with the External Speakers being placed at a distance instead of, or addition to, (if the Line Out Jacks can even be used for external speakers) in the enclosure I also cannot find what impedance speakers are compatible, or even if external speakers can be connected to the Line Out Jacks Only someone with the "Experience" you have is qualified to answer my questions Thank you for humoring me You are one of two people that have taken the time to answer me and given me not only expert advice, but advice that has kept me from throwing $$$$ away because of blow-off answers from "others!!!" Thanks again, Robert!!! Please keep up your great work!!!! Comment from : @lostreb |
Dumble Comment from : @fattone166 |

I have an original, unmodified JCM 800 (original owner) and bought 2 Diezel Herbert amps in the last 5 months I understand the sentimental value of the Marshall dominating the 80’s but honestly, the Diezel Herbert is on another level Even the clean sound is spectacular No, I will not sell the JCM but the Diezel is the best amp I ever played throughbrbrGreat video here Comment from : @alexnajarian1860 |
The Mesa mark iic+ is one of the biggest reasons why I adore Master of puppets so much, the entire album as opposed to their other 80s albums to me just seems like an articulate and sophisticated masterpiece, essentially the metal album form of drinking fine wine while on a boat in France, surrounded by expensive paintings It’s not as energetic and fast as Ride the lightning It has that extravagant luxurious and artistically dominant sound yet Hetfield’s guitar tone on that album just sounds like it’s on fire, it isn’t the dry, brutal sound of AJFA, it has an almost angelic, grandiose type of feeling If I wanted an amp to play older metal, I’d want a Mark series the most That or a JCM800 but mostly a mark Comment from : @brandondickie3456 |
He talked about fender and I have to say the fender m80 series was a great amp Comment from : @DreadNovella |
I think you've missed a couple of crucial amps 1 The Gibson GA40 2 Ampeg V4 guitar and bass (Stones '69) Fender '64 vibroverb Comment from : @daijones101 |
I had a 90's model Fender "evil" Twin, I regret selling it, damn it Comment from : @odelldaniel7868 |
