There are also occasional special "edition" banknotes which are adorned with celebratory or important scenes (I'm Canadian, BTW, in the Montreal area) I fondly recall a "fiver" with a scene of youngsters playing an unstructured hockey game on a natural frozen pond Just I did as a kid 60 years agohow tempus fugitsEh?
Comment from : Rik Levesque

amayakawaii
The reason the dime is smaller than the nickel is because originally it was made of silver and the nickel was always made of nickel which is a less-expensive base metal
Comment from : amayakawaii

I think Canada is slowly moving to a cashless society I rarely use cash, I almost always use my debit or credit card to pay for groceries, gas, food at restaurants or fast food, etc I have money in my wallet in case I need it, but I rarely pull it out brCanadian banks were early adopters of paying with bank cards at stores (Interac) It took the US much longer to get that going We also have E-transfers at all our major banks, something that the US doesn't have So we don't need apps like Paypal, we can literally transfer money through email It's super easy and secure
Comment from : Boardgame Planet

Ive always wondered how do americans know how much money they have in their wallets and how do they know which bills to pick when paying? Its all green They make fun of us for our multicoloured money but at a glance i know exactly how much money i have and can pick out exactly which bill i need instantly Its my pet peeve when im in the States It takes so long to find the right bill Is there a knack or are Americans just inefficient that way?brCash is still king Covid kinda made most of use our credit cards more but since every transaction with a card steal 2-3 from the shop, i like to use cash for small businesses Some businesses are cash only to be able to stay in the black while keeping their prices reasonable Also we had a national internet malfunction last year that shut down all card readers for a day so people are remembering the benefit of cash
Comment from : ToudaHell

rumor has it that the first toonies weren't well made and you could pop the middle right out of them I've never done it thoughbrbrAlso, our bills are also supposed to be able to come out of the dryer intact as well And the almost see-thru part is supposed to be able to help keep people from forging them
Comment from : Fawn Hill

For the year 2000 they had a canada wide contest for kids to draw and submit designs for special quarters to be printed for the year It became a bit of a game to try and find/collect/see every designbrI think they did it again for when the Olympics came to Canada as well

I used to collect stamps when I was a kid Canada (and most of the other countries in the world) had regular stamps and stamps that were works of art The American stamps were as dull as dishwater They are also one of the few countries who’s bank notes are one uniform colour across all values Boring

Brett Kendall
I remember visiting the UK as a kid for the 1st time in the 1970's - one of the first things I learned is I couldn't just stuff pound notes into my pockets because they just disintegrated Canadian notes were pretty tough by comparison Another memory is being in the US in 1980 right after the 6 Iranian hostages were released with Canadian help Interest in Canada was likely at an all-time high and one of the things they were fascinated with was our orange-coloured $2 bills The going rate was $5 USD for $2 Cdn, quite the exchange!
Comment from : Brett Kendall

Chris Knowles
The 1 dollar coin is only ever known as a Loonie I can't say I've looked at the bank notes in that detail, but I will be now :)
Comment from : Chris Knowles

kaylee
I did not expect her to bring up sudbury lol I'm from Sudbury The Nickel is pretty big but I feel like its bigger when you're a kid It's still big when you're bigger and I suppose when you see it for the first time it looks massive But growing up with it I guess you never really think about it
Comment from : kaylee

Hiccup Hufflepuff
I was a teenager working at Tim Hortons when the 2004 poppy quarters came out I remember that morning after opening a roll of brand new quarters from the bank, I gave an older guy his change and he looked at the bright red spot and said something like "What the f* is that?" lol That was the first coin to have that kind of image They make a lot of commemorative loonies and toonies too, not just quartersbrbrI don't know how to describe it exactly, I would say a type paint or dye on top of the metal? The metal surface is textured underneath it sort of like a nail-file, maybe to keep it on better They do start to wear off on the more beaten up coins, but it's very much part of the coin and pretty durablebrbrYou'll also see commemorative coins with identical designs but without the colour added I guess they only make so many with the paint each time, and there was a toony showing the northern lights a few years ago whose paint was glow-in-the-dark
Comment from : Hiccup Hufflepuff

B Pizza
Loonie, dollar, a buck is common in Ontario
Comment from : B Pizza

David Schmidt
I think Elizabeth will/should IMO, remain on the twenty The coins should follow tradition, but I'm not sure even now what is happening in the mint
Comment from : David Schmidt

Trudy Ziegler
We were always told that the quarter had an elk on it, not a caribou Caribou and reindeer are the same
Comment from : Trudy Ziegler

Tess
It would be more useful to put Canada's endangered species on a coin instead of a person (Not to suggest the Monarchy should be left off the endangered species list little joke, really) Educational, and because we Canadians are known to be polite, it would be the polite thing to do for the future of our environment What do you think?
Comment from : Tess

Canada has used debit cards for a lot longer than the US Most people will use either credit or debit to pay Paypass is pretty much ubiquitous so people can also pay with their phone if it has an RFID capable SIM, which is pretty much par for the course now
Comment from : NyxErebus

D Matthews
Canadians still use cash although debit and credit cards are used regularly as well 🇨🇦😊
Comment from : D Matthews

Wolfwow5
Mackenzie also held séances in the Prime Minister’s house He was kind of weird
Comment from : Wolfwow5

Wolfwow5
When the toonie was first introduced, people were popping out the middle section by freezing the toonies The metal shrunk different amounts so the middle would pop out fairly easily brbrThe Canadian Mint fixed the issue that allowed this to happen So if you find a 1996 toonie, you could try to pop it out But that is defacing official currency and is illegal
Comment from : Wolfwow5

Marilyn Thornton
The most western province, British Columbia would not join Confederation unless there was a railroad to connect to the East rather than south to the US

Jimmy J
The $1 coin with a loon on it was introduced by the government of Brian Mulroney in 1987 It replaced the $1 bill with a coin At the time many people refereed to it as the Mul-loonie or Mulroney's loonie and they called Mulroney a loony Over time the Canadian dollar has began to be called the loonie interchangeably with the dollar There was a scandal and recall of the first batch of twonies put out by the Royal Canadian Mint as the centre sections were falling out Having to carry coins around is much less convenient than bank notes and many of us who remember using $1 and $2 bills are still not happy about the coins One friend of mine in the military refereed to Canadian money as "shrapnel"brbrAlso, yes, it's very rare to use real money in Canada anymore Everyone uses bank cards, credit cards or other electronic payment methods
Comment from : Jimmy J

Everyone calls it a Loonie That is just the way it is We will never say "this costs three loonies" We'll still say it's three dollars, or three bucks But a Loonie is a loonie across Canada Even the French side, although they'll often use the French word for loon (huard), but it's not common in everyday speech
Comment from : 29maurice

29maurice
Fun fact: A quarter is often called a "trente sous" in French Trente means thirty Go figure (well, there's a perfectly understandable reason, but I won't explain here)
