I live in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and I see an abyss in the idea each daybrbrThe English word "completed" means the same thing in whatever tone you say it In a tonal language like Thai and Chinese, "maa" spoken in a falling tone and a low tone are a world apart, as far as "mom," "a dog," "a horse" and "arrive"brbrDue to the conditioning of "the spelling means the same thing" most western people never see a point to pay that regard, so that would say "horse cooked the meal," even having been here for five yearsbrbrI'd say, one can only be so "lazy" and no further

TheCompleteGuitarist
Great video I am an English teacher and spanish language learner (acquirer if you like) Regardless of what one thinks or method used, language only enters in one way whether it be the first, second or 10th Language is acquired implicitly, meaning our brain sub consciously orders and processes the input No amount of explicit intervention speeds up or skips over stages beyond extending exposure to the language Motivation is a factor Grammar and studying can be demotivating for many hence why many give up, especially in educational settings

Learning something starts with connecting what you know with what you don't know I've recently been into mnemonics and memory palaces, which is amazing, but never connected the "listen to content your interested in" until now It's not about perking your interest, it's about connecting what you know with what you don't so your brain fills in the gaps (2:51)

JoselitoBurrito
Muy buen video Muy de acuerdo contigo Yo aprendí la mayoría de mi inglés por mi cuenta viendo vídeos de Pewdiepie y otros youtubers americanos Muchas veces el contexto es lo único que necesitas, otras sí es cierto que tenía que buscar ciertas palabras, pero es sin duda la forma más divertida Es lo que estoy haciendo ahora con japonés mezclando con clases en Youtube porque tiene menos parecido que el inglés tiene con el español (por motivos obvios)

It takes an estimated 600 hours to get proficient (not fluent) in Spanish for a monolingual English speakerbrWhile I do approve of the "lazy method" for long-term learning, it is still going to take considerably more time, as evidenced by your 900 hours with still no speakingbrI personally do not enjoy the toddling around very basic content and because of that I force myself to study grammar and whatnot in order to surmount the initial barrier, until I become somewhat self-sufficient and able to consume reasonably entertaining content It takes a lot of willpower, but you said something that I always tell my students: "the most effective method is the one you actually do" This is more motivating to me than the repetitive, lazy approachbrSome languages like French I was able to simply start reading because I could understand lots of cognates (I speak both Portuguese and English), so I can be as lazy as I want Japanese on the other hand was a brick wall that required a more systematic approach and bruteforcing vocabulary into my skull through flashcardsbrbrHaving said all that, if I ever decide to learn Chinese I will do a good amount of lazy immersion with baby stuff just because I don't want to bias my pronunciation with over-rationalizing The strongest point of pure immersion like you're doing, in my opinion, is getting a sense of rhythm and pronunciation early on People who become fluent "on paper" first tend to never lose their accent just because it'd require too much conscious effort and they already feel satisfied with their level, whereas a beginner immersing is already putting in the hours into this sort of more specialized training by design

Great advice! I lived in Mexico for 3 years and it was sink or swim brbrI've been back in Canada for many years I don't like listening to music or podcasts except when I'm exercising So when I exercise I play Spanish-language reggaeton and other music that I like The lyrics are simple and you hear the songs many times over the months or years brbrOr I listen to Spanish-language podcasts about topics that interest me (mostly astronomy) Sometimes I follow along to exercise videos in Spanish You'd be surprised how many there are on YouTube brbrMost evenings I watch movies and TV shows in SpanishbrbrI also want to practice speaking The last place I lived, I started a Spanish conversation group In my current location, I have one local language partner, and one long-distance language partner I met on Tandem (a language exchange app)brbrI am aware of some grammar gaps, so when I'm in the mood I watch instructional YouTubes appropriate to my level (There are tests you can do to find your level)brbrIf any of this wasn't fun I wouldn't be doing it

I think this is a pretty interesting and often overlooked point about language learning It is also important to mention that learning can never be left out completely and that the amount of learning is dependent on your current skill level A complete beginner will need to start out learning basic vocabulary and grammar (depending on the language, also alphabets) simply because without this there is no comprehensible input they can use to acquire a language I find that at the start working through a good textbook helps a lot They often combine grammar and vocab learning but also give you comprehensible input to acquire the newly gained knowledge and they give you the chance to practice (and thus solidify the newly gained knowledge) by having you produce output (especially if they have a workbook)brbrAfter gaining a solid beginner knowledge of the language I think it's very important to find other sourced of comprehensible input I still wouldn't stop learning because you will always need the learning in order to make new input comprehensible but learning should not be the main thing you are doing Focusing on learning alone is like trying to learn the piano by only watching instruction videos and never actually playing it If you don't use the newly learned knowledge your brain will think it's useless and just throw it out againbrbr By the way, this is also one of the many reasons why taking classes is so helpful In a class environment you can try to use the language in many different contexts, you can work together with other people who are at around the same level as you are, while the teacher acts as a sort of scaffolding to the whole learning process A good teacher guides you through the work material by giving you additional explanations, they tell you when something you do is incorrect while also helping you to turn the given material of a lesson into comprehensible input

Finally, truthbrI learned english the same way but the more laziest one I never thought of learning it but rn i can speak it very well because all interesting content like videos or games or anything are in english I was just watching and listening to stuff on english i was interesting in and learn it the mindless waybrBut this also may be a problem because i want to study another language but i never did that and i can't do it the same way because i need to actually force myself to watch and listen something in this language

Ohm is Futile
As someone who knows a thing or two about this, you're not wrong but I feel like you're missing an important part of the equation: what's the person's goal in learning that language? If your goal is to not only be fluent but accurate, you need to put in some effort That said, you're absolutely right in saying that something you can't keep up is worse than something you can manage almost effortlessly The problem most people face is practicing speech (and writing if that's part of their goal) and there's only so many "lazy" ways to go about this
Comment from : Ohm is Futile

MightyGodlikeG
I agree with you to an extend, i mainly keep my english skills up by watching youtubevideos on various topics You need to have a basic understanding of the language you are trying to learn though I'm currently trying to learn japanese due to my upcoming japan vacation but just listening to japanese whatever won't teach the language And many languages work completeley different than others, so the principe won't work in any case What i'm trying to say is "yes, you can do it that way, but you need to have some skills already"

Ive been watching dramas to learn Chinese I just listen and certain words and phrases get repeated and I can start to make connections They are useful as the translations are there as wellbr I also get to understand the appropriate contexts for words and phrase use Also the use of tones in different situations It also helps me to familiarize myself with sound of the language brI learn simple vocab on the side as wellbrWarning, dramas are addictive brAlso immersion in the culture, eating and cooking, history helps toobrGreat advice on this vid, thank you, I am encouragedbrI have only spoken very simple things like greetings, numbers, things I like

Swiss here (and we have to learn a lot of languages for western societys):brI had to learn german french and english during school and hated itbrI took 1 year of latin where all we did was translation -> I did write 55 in vocabtest without ever learning it actively(best note is 6 from1 to 6 here) whilst I had often less than a 4 in vocab tests in english and french (I hated vocab learning)brbrMy english got better once I ignored school homework and the same exercices over and over again and switched all my social media, youtube and gaming to english (or mostly ignore school)brbrI am currently relearning french and learning spanish (because I want to, with the tools I want to when I want to) and whilst exposure helps I find that doing some vocab helps massively (My school french is good enough that I can survive in France but I lack active vocabulary) brbrbrI might switch my games and consoles from english to french and later spanish

6:14 thats exactly how I learned english lmao At some point I just decided to only watch english youtube videos, read english wikipedia articles, google almost everything in english, switch the language in all my apps to english, only join english discord servers (which wasn't really a choice tbh, there just aren't many discord servers in my language) and write comments in english just like this one And honstly, I didn't actually do that to learn english at first When I started all I really did was watch a few english youtube videos mixed with videos in my native language Slowly but surely everything just became more english for me Mostly because there was a hella lot of english content on the internet And now I'm here, writing about how I became fluent in english Its crazy
Comment from : Siko

Ian Peden
But you must know what the language means, so you need a translation for anything you don't know You won't necessarily get the meaning right from visual clues because they could mean anything Bilingual language acquisition involves translation

As an Englishman, I found Spanish relatively easy language to learn as many of the words relate to, and sound similar to English words in may waysbrI now live in Finland, masculine and feminine pronouns are not used as in English, Finns also have the habit of joining many words to make one word, add to this that the Finnish language has 15 "case endings" (that are added to a majority of words to describe their context,) when you start joining words and adding "cases" on the end of the words that make up this new word things get really trickybrFirstly, you have to break down the word into it's components, work out it's case endings and where they start and stop, once you have managed to do that (hopefully) all you have to do is get your tongue around trying to pronounce it, (some of these words can often have 20 or more characters) and at the same time as all that, Finnish vowels are not used in the same order as in the English format, so by the time you have managed to work out what that one word actual means and how to pronounce it, the conversation has already finished 🤨

I know I learnt English through immersion and I know it worked I wasn't even actively trying to learn, I just used English internet because I liked the content there more than my native language content Yet now when I'm trying to learn German the first thing I did was to look up grammar tables For some reason I didn't even consider trying the same approach that made me learn English until fluency Though to be fair, it did take around 5 years of me using English internet before I became fluent

Your final bit about how you're 900 hours in and you're understanding but not speaking honestly makes a ton of sense I've tried learning languages in the past and they all emphasized speaking WHILE learning to understand But as a person, I definitely listened and understood English being spoken to me for a long time before really being able to formulate my own thoughts into a sentence that made any sense beyond "See Jane run This is Jane's ball The ball is round"

Greetings from New Zealand Gabriel Wyner talks about that in his book Fluent Forever You may be interested in it He does use flash cards, but his approach to them is very different from the usual, and he is also a big believer in not spending hours studying in the traditional waybrA tip I picked up with watching tv is to watch it with the closed captions (rather than subtitles) on, it helps with understanding how the written words are pronounced Cheers

Comment from : French Comprehensible Input

Cyrano
The issue is to find comprehensible input that is engaging and also just right for your levelbrFor Japanese everything was too easy or too hard I spent hours and hours skimming the internet to find comprehensible inputbrAt some point you just have to bite the bullet and do with what's available, which is a mix of studying and unsatisfying input
Comment from : Cyrano

イチゴ
Sometimes you actually find new things you enjoy you didn’t know you would (or at least you didn’t enjoy before in your NL) in my case, I never got into Japanese light novels or manga…until I started learning Japanese…now they are just something I enjoy…same thing with JDramas…never got into them in English, but in Japanese I can’t get enough of them sometimesbrbrBut I do agree…never force yourself to like something you originally didn’t as it can be the reason why you quit learning…you can try out new things you normally didn’t like in your NL language, but if you still don’t like it just move on :)

I learned English as a child by watching cartoons (here in the NL we don't dub it in dutch) and playing video games So, remembering this, I replayed games I'd already played with the language set to Italian, I watched Italian shows with english subs, and later with Italian subs, and it's actually going pretty well! The only thing is that it takes a lot of content input to get to grips with the language, plus I do need to look up or google translate a bunch of things

I grew up bilingual (german and hungarian), and I am the laziest mf around, I learnd english via the internet, I mean yeah I had english classes in school, but I didn´t really study, only the essential things stuck to me, and I started to use englisch online, in games vie voice chat, videos, articles and much more basically my online life went english really fast So it really works, I plan to do the same in spanish so wish me luck And also good luck to whoever read this, if I could do it, you can do it too!

MrHotDog222
what this method reminds me of is playing games Naturally doing things in a natural and casual manner rather than focusing on key specific things you lack in is quite sjmilar to this For example, when you are not very good at aiming in an fps game There are 2 approches 1 Practice your aim, the fast waybto improvement 2 Just play more, your aim will slowly improve over time, just enjoy the game Into this context we could use the example, 1 practice your coversation skills, will learn faster but boring and time consuming 2 watching dramas or movies in that language, have fun and learn over a longer period
Comment from : MrHotDog222

7:25 btw, it's very funny when you say to start by typing in my target language an comprehensive input, because this was I literally how I find out this video 😂😂brbrAnd yeah, in this case, I wanted someone speaking in English about my target language 😎
