Competition is always good, but yoiu need an equal competitor China is not there yet Its currency is not fully convertible because its capital account transactions are restricted A reserve currency must be freely convertible for both current and capital transactions Also, a reserve currency tends to imply a current account deficit to pump out your currency (ie dollars) to the rest of the world, who wants it But China likes to have a current account surplus, which means that they are withdrawing liquidity from the world China is not yet a reserve currency--maybe someday
