I was made homeless by Cannock council through no fault of my own brI'm a 68 year old disabled pensioner and my friend has the early stages brof dementia, i went to two local newspapers to give them this story but brthey were not interested, obviously the m s m are not interested in white brpeople getting booted out of there homes, if I had been black or an illegalbrimmigrant it would have been splashed all over the front of the tabloids

I watched this video and endeavoured to not ignore beggars on the streetsbrbrOne gentleman asked me for some money…I refused him but offered to buy him a sandwichbrbrFar from being grateful, he said ‘aye…and get us a Coke and all’brbrI did comply with his request so as not to offend his dignity, and purchased his desired itemsbrbrHe took them from me without so much as a ‘thank you’brbrI can’t say I have much sympathy for them now

True Story: I worked for Bournemouth Council on their parks department Every year they have a lovely air show for tourists and locals The local councillors demanded every year that we in their words “Get rid” of the homeless around the areas the air show will take place They wanted to show B’mouth as a lovely seaside town I refused one year to move them on and said that just because their homeless it does not make them cattle Instead of spending millions on the air show they should tackle their homeless problem first

I'm from NC, too I just recently got put in emergency housing, which was lucky It's a difficult life, but I had friends who helped me out, which I've been grateful for if I didn't have those people around my life would've ended a lot earlier

It depends, if I see the same homeless person serveral times I will eventually say hello and offer to get food but most of the homeless you end up seeing don't stick around long enough You want to help them with money but you know its a gamble with how the money will be spent, and I wouldn't want to feel like I've played a part in enabling any of that illicit behaviour Which sucks because you know not all the homeless are like that

Interesting film! I am often in town and see some familiar faces I think it's always important to be human However, I see why people just walk past I usually have a small child in tow and while I am sure there are some lovely folk, we have had our share of bad experiences Even if it is the addiction talking and threatening, it is still threatening I feel a mixture of fear/ dread/ helplessness There are so many of them I can't stop and chat to them all, even if I felt safe to It is really sad and there should always be dignity and those stories are truly awful However, to really move forward, there has to be some recognition of personal responsibility for future choices involved Lots of people have to make really tough choices and give up on very important things to keep body and soul together, including things like giving up family pets, seeking help for mental health and addiction Some things can only be done for yourself You can't make someone deal with addiction The man who questions if landlords would let him a house - no of course nobody would want to rent to him Not because they wish him evil, but the landlords (and very rarely do I side with them - not my fave people!) will usually have mortgages and need their properties responsibly paid and cared for, or they will end in a spiral of debt and lose their homes I agree with one of the comments below saying we have to help the root cause of the problems - addiction in most cases Even if it's not why you became homeless, being homeless is enough to cause addiction I am wondering if there are any official figures and data on homelessness in Newcastle Would be really interesting to hear from the charities involved

Hi Ryan, I love these two videos, I think sharing vulnerable people's situations is so important, especially when they have little voice or no one to talk to and you do a great job at it I'm planning on doing more research for my uni project, to help shed some light, see how local charities in the toon are helping and get us thinking about best ways to help I was wondering if you could add anything more that youve learnt by chatting to people on the streets? I've had a few conversations with some lovely people but can't get in contact with any local charities and I wanna find out what works, what doesnt and whybrbrMaddy:)

I've always fancied doing this myself after getting a camera I seen over time a ginger lass that used to sit just along from Greg's on the quayside first appear on the streets all fresh looking like she shouldn't be there to eventually looking well gone which is a crying shame like if I'm ever out in any city I tend to drift off from my mate's and go and have a good convo with the homeless like far less pretence with them than being pissed up paying silly money for overpriced drinks

Sadly I know one of the interviewees, he's not homeless and his partner is not dead, shes in the James Cook hospital in Middlesbrough awaiting an operation Take everything they say with a pinch of salt, yes they all have tales to tell and society has badly failed them, but one or two will lie for the next fix if its convenient Our country is broken and this is no way for people in a supposedly rich country to live, they need help and our government is blind to their plight

I'm on a bus at the moment but will definitely give this a proper watch when I get in The homeless population have a big part in my heart I'm not able to do much but I have bought the odd meal and cups of tea when I've had a few pennies The number one thing I learnt very quickly is the thing that is more precious than money or food is your time I've had many conversations with people over the years who have defeated massive obstacles The man who got me talking to the population more often with an incredible man who had just defeated his addiction to heroin while in prison but had sadly found himself back on the streets after leaving prison The system is really letting these people down I see so many people fighting drug and alcohol addiction every day in Newcastle and one person can't possibly put a dent in it, but when multiple people get involved, it makes a difference For the price of a cup of tea and 10 mins of your time, you can make someone's day

I live and work in Newcastle I work on Grey Street, I pass multiple homeless people It's heartbreaking to see, especially because I don't feel like I can give money to help They'll ask how you're doing, or say hi, it's embarrassing to not be able to help them to be honest Cuts every time I guess I'll make an effort to at least have a conversation

I always try to help with food ,but there are some who are incredibly aggressive, there's a younf4girl who I've seen repeatedly with a male, she's 20, has been offered help but refuses if he's not included but she says the refuse as he gets aggressive when he has no cannabis I do think we could ease this by stopping the boats crossing the channel
