br🖊 Quote of the week: “It is not hard to make money in the market What is hard to avoid is the alluring temptation to throw your money away on short, get-rich-quick speculative binges It is an obvious lesson, but one frequently ignored” - Burton G Malkiel, "A Random Walk Down Wall Street" 👈yet another great reason to automate your finances Comment from : Thomas Frank |

You should include YNAB in your discussion… especially for 1-month buffer Comment from : Dax Mickelson |

Quicken - I started using Quicken in the 80's I have every transaction, every stock buy and sale, all 401k investments, all pay checks with break down from tax categories, medial, insurance, all tied into the planning session to do crazy WHAT IF SCENARIOS for retirement, savings for kids college, etc, etc All tied to my bank accounts and monthly reconcilations - transactions download and I schedule bill payment from within Quicken Comment from : Neil Greene |

Great video I'm 65 years old and have been following this basic plan for my entire life Back in the day I wrote out the checks and dropped them in the mail Setting up an automatic payment for your monthly expenses not only makes sure you pay on time but also gives you a clear insight into what you are spending if you are not doing a budget This approach has saved me many times when life interfered with paying attention to my bills And believe me, life will get in the way, and automation takes one more worry off the table If you set it up to pay a little more than your typical utility bill, if you don't have time to review at least the bill is paid And guess what, the next month the overpayment is deducted from your bill Comment from : MJ Stormes |
Great video I'm a tech guy so I was hoping the "automate" part was going to be more than just "set up automatic payments / transfers" But still great advice overall! Comment from : Elliot Weishaar |
Is this teck tree you showed in the video available anywhere? Comment from : alexandar varchev |

For all the late teens/early 20 year olds: Credit cards are A DANGEROUS THING! What Thomas says is 100 true You should treat it like a debit card Credit card companies will be reaching out and offering you larger and larger credit lines DONT USE THEM UNLESS IT IS AN EMERGENCY! You can wait to save up for the new xbox I know this goes without saying, but take it from someone who is now paying back for all their mistakes they made in their early 20's because I wanted to live outside of means Comment from : Zack W |
Basically use direct debits to automatically pay bills you can't avoid and standing orders to ringfence money into savings or investments to prevent you from spending it mindlessly It's been a mainstay of banking for decades, and can be done without even having internet banking Comment from : Ian Grant |
Runs an ad about an ad free platform K Comment from : Cake Cake |

One thing i started doing for peace of mind really was making my auto investments happen on a pay day Having to pay rent and utility bills in the first week AND see my investment money leave the account for my bank account down to some low balances and having the floating room for a paycheck so that my balance quite literally stays close to the same is super satisfying Comment from : AoT-Cobalt |
The Civ comparison is hilarious and brilliant! Comment from : Keith Ellis |
Was gonna watch the video because I'm looking for information on how to square away my finances, and as soon as I heard the word "investment" (red flag) I left Comment from : Jeremy Metcalf |

Another tip (that I sadly figured out about 20 years into adulthood) is to call your credit card companies and get them all on the same pay date All of my CCs are due on the 15th It makes it easy for me to remember when it’s due Comment from : John Clark |

The problem with this is a lot of people don't learn how to track their finances brbrI think a large reason people are so sold on raising minimum wage is they don't see the decrease in their pay and the rise in cost of livingbrIf you are making $20 an hour and minimum wage goes up $1 so you get a $007 raise and the cost of living goes up by $1 an hour, you are effectively making -$2 an hour compared to what you were beforebrThis is one of the biggest reasons the middle class is shrinking down to the poverty line every time minimum wage goes up we end up making less money Comment from : toorimakun |
Love the idea of the tech map I want to do that for so many things now Comment from : Peter Simon |

I remember a time where banking was done in person, with cash Imagine every week taking money out of an account and transferring it to another account either in the same or another bank That is a long time queing Been there done that Whilst I miss using cash, I do find it more convenient to automate Comment from : G M |
One thing that I did that helped immensely (which I learned from another finance YouTube video), is call and have the due date for my cell phone bill, my utilities, and all my credit cards moved to the 1st of the month So you only have to check and track money going out of your account on one day It makes managing your bill payments sooo much easier Comment from : Richard Ujadughele |
HOW I automated my finances: ad, I made 300k, important but irrelevant math, ad, credit cards…, quick clips of flowchart, ad, plug, good luck Comment from : joshua vabro |

Lots a good advice, but one caveat is needed A healthy 44 year old friend suddenly fell into a coma and died two weeks later He had everything set up on his password protected laptop- automatic payments, online statements, and billing But no one knew his password to stop subscriptions, cell phone, or access his accounts to his final bills Comment from : Gary Mootz |
Last part is very true I would definitely still monitor my autopay bills or have it setup to send me notifications when a bill is paid Worked in telco and i've seen several people randomly get bills that are 100x their usual bills due to billing errors I've also had a similar bill from my power company that I've disputed and got back $300 After you reach a certain amount in savings these amounts can fly under the radar Comment from : iben dover |

I really like that Tech Tree I will point out that if I compare it to recommendations from Bobblehead or Dave Ramsey, it probably needs more information on being insured A high deductible plan is certainly not for everyone, but since an HSA is triple tax-advantaged, it important to understand that before considering which plan makes the most sense At this point, I'm trying to work my way through dipping my toes into the high-risk investment category Having a tech tree for those options specifically would be interesting Comment from : GQGeek81 |

For years I struggled with outstanding debts, bills and my children's school fees I was at a point where I wanted to give up when I came across YouTube about how to make and multiply your income through passive income Fortunately, I had saved some money and decided to start an investment (with the help of an investment advisor) Right now I'm sitting at around 12 million ROI and have paid my debts in full Comment from : Julius Fritz |
Talk about what the doctor ordered brThank you Comment from : Leon Vieira |
I will warn everyone here right now NEVER automate any bill that can fluctuate, like utilities or credit cards There's a massive class action lawsuit against a city's water and power company for incorrect billing I can't tell you how many people I heard from who went from auto-paying $200 a month to suddenly getting charged $5000+, without their knowledge Their account was wiped clean with that one bill, they were hit with overage fees, and they couldn't get the money back People lost their homes because all of their money was gone brbrThere are things you can do to reduce the risk of this situation, but the best way to mitigate the risk is to view your fluctuating bills before paying them Comment from : CyborgNinja7 |

And of course THANK YOU for ALL your advice I'm a generation older than you but you are helping me ketchup on all the things I missed and/or are deficient in Truly thank you!
