Reaching out if you’ve solved this mystery? I have a couple 1972 Kennedy Halves that weigh 103 grams I now found one that weighs 99 grams Is this worth getting graded if it can even be graded I will say this coin is in excellent shape Who would you suggest? Or just save it as a oddity Comment from : Richard B |
Im so glad to find an answer I have a 72 and it weighs 1116 I also believe that it is slightly smaller in circumference Just a smidge, I haven't measured it though Comment from : Scheryl |

That's the wrong way to replicate where In order to properly replicate where, you need to carry the coin in your pocket change True story Comment from : Remain One2C |

Thank you for the video! Just found one of these in our rolls Same thing, picked out cause of sound and it weighs in at 1036 grams One funny thing is I already watched this video sometime in the past cause I already had it liked Comment from : Jeff Brown |
I just found a 72 P that has the same sound and weighs only 104 g Any follow up on this or ??? Just wondering I thought about the Quarter stock theory but the thickness debunks that theory Comment from : Papagiorgio |
J ai une pièce pareille à l envers aussi ça vaut quelque chose au moin 🥰 Comment from : Atalia stergios |
Wouldn't it not make a difference what was stamped into the the planchet wait ok the hole point of the weight was because a $1 silver coin weig 26 grams two50 cent silvers weigh 12 6 so quarters weigh 63 Comment from : Nunya Bisnis |
I had one found coin roll hunting in Feb 2021 by Pa's Spare Time Mine is 105g I believe Not much info out there and the quarter sheet sounds most plausible to me Thanks Comment from : Adam Cowles |

I will have to watch for those coins, great job of telling us about the cause of the light planchet Comment from : Digging for Silver |
How much thinner is the quarter sheet? You would have been able to measure the the difference There have been a lot of counterfeit coins released into circulation from various sources Do the grading companies have any info on this? I'm going with fake on this one Comment from : flieslow |
Whats weird is very next day after RFT found that I found 1 in my rolls Comment from : MTN Vaults |

The only thing I don't understand about the quarter sheet theory is wouldn't the half dollar be visibly thinner? Very cool find Seeker! Comment from : 1Grizzman |
“Taking a Dremel to this half dollar bothers me too,” says he who cracks open slabs 🤣🤣🤣 I also have a 1972 Philly half dollar with a light planchet that Rick Gee found for me on his stream The quarter sheet theory makes sense and would fit the profile of only occurring during a certain year But I would be very curious to know how many were actually minted that way and how rare or common this is Comment from : Treasure Turd |
I have a presidential dollar that is exactly like this a whole gram less I have not figured out what is wrong with it yet but this theory makes sense Comment from : Reeve Goat |

Possible magician coin check edge closely And check back for it to not be inline Mark on back is were it was held to be sandwiched apart BTW it makes that sound because it's hollow Comment from : CYLENTKILLS |
Interesting If it were a more valuable coin -- it would most likely be a fake But, in this case you are most likely on the right trail I suspect NGC and PCGS would know more Comment from : Don |
Wow Comment from : Gina R |
That's an amazing weight difference I like the quarter sheet theory Thanks for sharing, good luck, happy hunting and take care Comment from : Clayton County History Hound |
I swear I could smell the "sanding" smell when you used the dremel! LOL! Thanks for the explanation and inspection of the coin! Comment from : Sparkle Flair |
Did you check the dimensions? Quarters from '72 should weigh 56 gms, I believe 6 something if it's an error I'm thinking wrong planchet, possibly something foreign? Also, I can't really tell but it looks like there might be some doubling on the obverse from your picture Maybe you want to check this out? Or post a some good pictures? Comment from : Lady Kid Nickels |
Could have been struck on a foreign planchet! Comment from : Ron Schneider |
