Parents, if you have adult children living at home with you, stop providing all kinds of services for free, (laundry, shopping, cooking meals, waking them up, transportation, giving money or paying their bills!) I see this mistake all the time and hear the parent's frustrated because 'kids' are not preparing for adult life on their own! brYour job as a parent, is to work yourself OUT of a job, not become perfect in perpetuity at it! (And you may need to expand your identity beyond that of just "parent" after the full time parenting days are ending!) It's a great role and time of life, but its not a perpetual career!)br "Teach your children well" starting at age 2 and 3 (with age-appropriate tasks and expectations!) ie: br putting away laundry, helping to carry parcels and groceries and put away inside, how to take care of their possessions, spaces you have lent them (like bedrooms- news flash - THEY DON'T OWN any part of YOUR property, so when they get mouthy and entitled, and slam the door and tell you to stay out of THEIR room, you can just remove YOUR door to YOUR room, and inform them how things work ! ), and common spaces , all property maintenance inside and outside, personal finances -including paying the bills with you so they grow up with a realistic sense of where money goes and how much, and planning and saving for things you want to be able to do, care of the body and health, thinking about and planning for future goals, care of pets or anyone that is dependent on you for its wellbeingbrThey need to know how to take GOOD care of themselves and anything they may be or become responsible for, to be considered an adult! Bigger body is NOT the end definition of full adultbr (enlightened self interest here too, for they may be taking care of YOU someday Wouldn't you like to know they can do it WELL and not- half-assed!)brWhen they get jobs, start charging them 'rent', (and you can save it up (some or all of it )and present them with it later on if you would like) Gets them used to not just wasting all their money away in the perpetual teenage 'party-hearty' lifestyle! br And yes, WHERE EVER they live, they will be subject to the rules of THAT establishment, like it or lump itParents, Comment from : novaricos |
