I agree with the following: "While insurgencies share certain common characteristics, every insurgency plays out in a particular historical context, is the product of a particular set of grievances, and is shaped by unique ethnic, geographic, resource, ideological and strategic factors that defy a formulaic approach" - Douglas Porch in The dangerous myths and dubious promise of COIN

I'd love to see colonel Gentile and colonel Nagl debate

I think the army should focus on finding and killing the enemy Leave the development and social services to NGOs and the bickering to politicians I also think the US army should not neglect its conventional war fighting capability China is the free world's biggest threat and if it comes to war, it will probably be a conventional one

Arlie Ferguson
He needs to tell us what the primary evidence he's referring to amounts to What's his sense of the true reason for the turn around in Iraq? I thought he would at least elaborate on the way in which it does not work

Far be it for me to debate such agust speakers as those who speak at the Army War College However, having spent more than twenty years in the military and a veteran of Vietnam it is my humble opinion that ever since the end of the Second World War, it has been because of political considerations and or interference, an operational concept of containment rather than total victory has existed within our military The people in our government who send us off to these "conflicts", usually at the behest of the United Nations are not willing, even at the start to commit the resources to ensure victory in the usual sense of the word Any military commander worth his salt should have known better than to get involved in either Iraq or Afghanistan considering the history of instability in both of those regions It is my opinion, that we would be far better served as a country if our leader would quit trying to use our military as a fire brigade for the world's problems

C'mon man you can't just say Abrams and Petraeus and Crystal did the same as before because "all primary evidence" points to that, and not elaborate extensively on what you are talking about Even if I may not disagree with you in the end, the "narrative" you are trying to debunk has some powerful data to support its claims

Interesting perspective Quite different to the prevailing narrative of Nagl et al

Andrew Erntell
The US needs to learn from their British allies who conducted sucessful counter insurgency campaigns in Oman, Borneo and Malaysia The failure of American operations can be summarized as always looking for the quick fix
