I use light infantry to lure the cav closer and have them not in front but on the side so they can cover the advanced and keep the line infantry far enough so they can pull back

Just for a note for you guys: If you have a steep enough hilly defensive position, this tactic can actually work without friendly fire casualties (on the most part) But to be honest, you should just use canister to mow down enemy AI assault's; it's damn way too easy

Its a cool tactic, but it does backfire When one unit of the light infantry dies even using light infantry doctrine, they all stand up and adjust to new positions and the line infantry behind just shreds through them when they fire

In NTW would build entire armies of light infantry and put them in light mode, that way they suffer less cassualties and inflict massive damage as they fire at will and everybody fired instead of volleys and lines, very precise and deadly, I would have 2 units holding fire waiting for calvalry charges, calvary just get destroyed once the fire at will order is given

It's situational and best to move em further in front and let them weaken the enemy as you pull them back into the range of your line brOr my personal method of using them is as an ambush or flanking unit Hide them in trees and use them to attack the enemy from the sides or behind after they engage with your line

I'll say that I figured it out at the start of Napoleon (played before Empire)brbrI tried to use the Light infantry side by side with Line infantry, but it was too inflexible I also tried to use them as skirmishers before the battle between the two lines, but it was more problem that it was worth itbrbrbrI genuinely felt smart seeing no one doing it in Multiplayer for a long timebrbrbrIt is similar to kneeling in FOTS The AI doesn't do it and with the amount of bonus the AI has in VH/VH I think it works out better than using kneeling in FOTS against the AI It will target those crouching units instead of your main line

I employed this after reading an article about napoleonic tactics where he used his voltigeurs to harass his enemies' mainline before engaging with his own line infantry

Funnily enough, I tend not to use the “light infantry behaviour in front of line” technique I don’t know why, but it seems like occasionally the light infantry will stand up due to their reload animation, and therefore get shot in the back by the line infantrybrbrThere are also times where the enemy will get in range of my Light foot, but not my line, leading to only the Light firing This, paired with the Light absorbing all the fire, means that they inevitably get extreme casualties brbrDoesn’t help that occasionally the enemy charges right in and the Light foot are too slow to move Typically, I use the Light foot as flanking units, as their range means that they can hit enemy units in the middle all the way from the sides

I thought it was the only valid option to use this skill i mean, i came from shogun 2, and i had an obsession with hills and firing arcs for my matchlocks, so it was simple to find out this the first time you see these guys bend the knee
