I am a huge proponant of Vygotsky's developmental theory That being said I want to say that Erikson's frame on how children develop is definitely thought provoking and important to engage with, but ultimately much too structured to accurately describe human development I've seen children who are much more adept and intelligent than so many other adults I know, and conversely there are children who have special needs in order to develop any further; who may be 16 years old, but have the mental faculties of a third grader Rather than citing their genetics as the source of their intellect or lack thereof, I would assert it's their upbringing, the guidance they've received, and their access to novel information and and activities Comment from : johndoh1000 |

I paraphrased all the text and removed plagiarism, and changed grammar and spelling mistakes brErikson's theory of psychosocial development (stage theory) teaches us that we should all go through eight stages of life development from birth until death at old age At each step, we confront new demands, ask further questions, and meet new people, influencing our judgment and life experience Each step is a struggle for each person, and if we can't get through it, we won't be able to move on to the next one, and we'll be trapped with the difficulties we haven't solved yetbrbrTrust vs mistrust is the first stage (age: 0 - 2 or infancy) When we leave our mother's womb and enter the world for the first time, we are nervous We doubt our ability to trust others We would feel warm and comfortable with people and establish trust if our caretaker provided us with love and care If our caretaker makes us fearful, we will be hesitant to trust others, afraid they will be untrustworthy - The caretaker is a key figurebrbrAutonomy vs shame & doubt in the second stage (age: 2 - 4 or early childhood)brIn our growth, both parents play an essential role We begin to understand our existence and our inherited traits from our parents We wonder if it's okay for us to learn and experiment independently We will get more confidence and self-assurance if our parents let us explore Suppose, on the other hand Our parents forbid us from exploring in some way because of tradition or specific regulations We start to doubt ourselves, feel ashamed, and lose confidence - Parents are the most important peoplebrbrInitiative vs Guilt in the third stage (age: 4 - 5 or pre-school) We begin to be curious about everything, try new things and take charge of our own lives We learn fundamental concepts such as how round things roll We begin to investigate and test ourselves We grow and progress when we receive support from our family members; we can acquire Guilt if we are told what we do is ridiculous or incorrect We are now receiving instruction and learning from the entire familybr4th stage - inadequacy vs industry (Age range: 5 to 12 years old or school-aged) If we've made it to the third stage, we've identified our passions and how we vary from others We want to demonstrate that we can do things correctly and independently We become more diligent and hardworking when we obtain praise from our teachers or peers On the other hand, when we receive too much negative feedback, we feel inadequate and lose motivation Our immediate surroundings, as well as our school, now have the most significant influence on usbrbr5th stage - identity vs role-confusion (age: 12 - 20 or adolescence / young adulthood) –brDuring adolescence, we learn that we all have different social roles We are Children, friends, students and citizens; many people experience an identity crisis (also a terminology coined by Erik Ericsson) However, If our parents allow us to go out and explore the world around us, we can find our identity On the other hand, if we are pushed to conform to their views and opinions, we can face role confusion and feel lost Our friends and role models are crucial to our learningbrbrIntimacy vs isolation in the sixth stage (early adulthood or age: 20 - 40)brWe begin to realise who we are as young adults, and we begin to let go of the relationships we made in our younger years to fit in with newer social groups We ask ourselves if we can love and commit if we are confident and content for a long time If we cannot build close relationships, we risk becoming isolated and experiencing feelings of loneliness Our friends and partners play an essential role in our growthbrbr7th stage - generativity vs stagnation (adulthood - 40 - 65) brWhen we reach our forties, we become more at ease, creatively utilise our free time, and begin to contribute more to society It is generativity that we are concerned with We're content if we believe we can guide the next generation into this world However, we can become negative and stagnant if we have unresolved disputes People and our workplaces now have the most significant influence on usbrbr8th stage - ego integrity vs despair (Maturity 65 -Death)brWe tend to slow down as we become older and begin to reflect on our lives; if we believe we did well, we develop emotions of contentment and integrity Otherwise, we may experience despondency and resentment Comment from : Steven Penny |

Erikson's theory of psychosocial development (stage theory) tells us that we should go through 8 stages of life development from birth to death At each stage, we encounter different needs, ask questions, and meet new people that affect our judgment and experience in our lives
brEach stage is a challenge for each individual, and if we cannot pass through the stage, we cannot advance to another stage but are stuck in the problems we haven't resolved within
br1st stage - trust vs mistrust (age: 0 - 2 or infancy)
br
brWe feel anxious the time we leave our mother's womb and come into the new world We question whether we can trust others If our caretaker provides us love and care, we would feel warm and comfortable around people, and thus develop trust If our caretaker makes us fear, we would not easily trust others, afraid that they will be bad for us too, thus untrust
br- Key person: caretaker(basically our mom)
br2nd stage - autonomy vs shame & doubt (age: 2 - 4 or early childhood)
brWe start to know about our existence, the characteristic of us, that comes down from our parents We question whether it is okay to learn and explore that ourselves If our parents allow us to explore, we will gain more confidence, more self-confidence If our parents discourage us to explore, in some way due to tradition, or certain rules, we will doubt ourselves, even feel shame, thus become less confident
br- Key person: parents (mom and dad)
br3rd stage - initiative vs guilt (age: 4 - 5 or pre-school)
brWe begin to get curious about everything, try different things, and take initiative Exploring, and taking up the things we are interested in is fun if we receive encouragement from our family members Otherwise, if they tell us that the things we are interested in are foolish or dumb, we will feel like we have done a thing we shouldn't do, thus forming guilt
br- Key person: our whole family (including siblings, aunts, grandparents)
br4th stage - industry vs inferior (age: 5 - 12 or school-age)
brIf we have passed the 3rd stage, we have discovered our interests We wanna prove that we can do great in the things we are interested in If we get the approval of what we are interested in, we will get the motivation to do it more, thus more enjoyable If we get disapproval, we may feel inferior, thus no motivation to pursue our interest
br- For my exp: I have been interested in table tennis since I was 9 in school And I got in the table tennis club in school and got trained My family, friends, teachers, and coach are really supportive, and thus really enjoy it
br- my opinion: I believe I am at the identity foreclosure stage at that point since I really wanna be varsity in table tennis due to my coach at that point lol
br5th stage - identity vs role-confusion(age: 12 - 20 or adolescence / young adulthood)
br- We find ourselves that we obtain multiple roles, a friend, a student, and a member of society
br- We start to have an identity crisis(coin by Eric too) and feel lost
br- If people around us allow us to discover ourselves freely, we will eventually find our own identity
br- Otherwise, if other people, like parents, or adults, want us to fit into the role they have "paved" for us, and disapprove us to discover ourselves, we will conflict with our "identity", thus leading to role confusion
br6th stage - intimacy vs isolation(early adulthood or age: 20 - 40)
br- after passing the stage of identity, we find our own identity, and break the relationships with not so important one to fit in to the true belonging group We wonder if we can find love in this stage, if yes, we are happy, and if not, we feel lonely
br- key figures: friends and partners
br7th stage - generativity vs stagnation (adulthood - 40 - 65)
br- In this stage, we find self-interest, love, and the ability to feed ourselves already So we start to think about our next generation and contribute to society If they happy, we happy Otherwise, if the stages before haven't resolve yet, we may face a lot of conflicts in our life
br- Key figure: family and work members
br8th stage - ego integrity vs despair
br- we think back of our life, the goods and bad If we think back and feel content about them, we are living enough and thus, content Otherwise, we might be sad and regret to all the decision we have been made, which affect our mood Comment from : 續觀之 |

I am currently 25 years old Stage 6, however if I skip Stage 7 meaning if I skip to age 40 or 43, well I ruin the step, Think life like a film, if I skip 5 to 10 minutes of the film, the film is not over you just accelerated the film, you ruin the film because a lot have changed in the 5 or 10 minutes you skip Comment from : Progressive Rising |
