Rob Baldwin
Started learning guitar a couple of weeks ago off another site and just this info of angling the pick slightly has really improved my strumming! Such a small change but big results And something that was completely overlooked by them!! Thanks!
Comment from : Rob Baldwin

Nick Rush

Great tutorial, it really helped me the explanation of literally where to place the forearm in the eletric guitar Been struggling on how to use the pick but after watching this ive noticed I cant even position myself with the guitar correctly

LET’STALKTV
Disagree that the arm should be sitting on the guitar The excuse that holding your elbow above the guitar will cause muscle soreness is NOT a reason to abandon this necessary part of strumming—NOT resting your elbow lazily on the guitar; All you are doing is sacrificing control of the strumming patterns by resting your elbow lazily on the guitar
Comment from : LET’STALKTV

Sukran Bahar Sener
Thank you so much for your videos! I absolutely love them! I feel like having the pick angled slightly down makes upstrums harder, do you have suggestions on adjusting that? I think I angle my wrist to correct for that which I am not supposed to do!
Comment from : Sukran Bahar Sener

basausi
I’m sorry but the reasoning of thin vs thick picks purpose here is a bit odd, It’s more of the choice of tone you’d get from pick thickness, material they are made of!
Comment from : basausi

Paolo Finamore
Sometimes, with this particular posture, guitar body tends to slide away, underneath my elbow, if I wear a long-sleeved shirt Do I resign myself to having my arm uncovered, even in winter? :) Thanks

Thanks so much Angle tip was very helpful

Paul A
But is it good recommendation for beginners to start with thin pick? It's forgiving but isn't it what we want to avoid to hold pick tightly? I think if you start with thicker pick you're aware of it from the start My neighbour has been playing guitar for 20 years and most like the campfire style you know and he used thin pick all the time and when I gave him thicker pick, he had that heavier grip so he couldn't play with it at all
Comment from : Paul A

Gila Shroot
Great lesson Thank you I never understood why they do not make a thicker guitar body that you can rest your arm on an electric guitar

MsSnoozable
I really need help No matter what I do my right shoulder hurts like crazy The body feels so thick and i can't reach forward and down enough with severely straining my shoulder I can only play for about 20 minutes before the pain is too much I see others can put there elbow in front of the body without much effort but it really hurts to even do that My elbow rests on top by default I'm fine on Ukelele, though I need a strap to hold it up Is there just something severely wrong with my proportions? I can't find any info on this and I'd greatly appreciate some advice I think maybe my torso is too small? Even standing with a strap it doesn't work because the left hand gets so far away I can't play properly
Comment from : MsSnoozable

Rahul Joshi
Hey Justin you mentioned the downstroke pick position but I am getting in trouble while doing upward strokecan you help how to do it?
Comment from : Rahul Joshi

James Cooke
Here's a tip for you on holding your pick Take a one hole punch and put a hole in the upper middle of the pick As you sweat, the moisture will help stick the pick to your fingersI sometimes lick my finger when I start playing

Eric Bolz
I'm not a beginner, I play acoustic with a flat pick and do hybrid picking But I find fast strumming with a pick very difficult For example, the fast strumming on Pinball Wizard Arrgghhhh I'm a wrist flipping strummer, and without a pick I can easily play it, at full speed, in a relaxed manner But holding onto the pick, at that speed, and for such long periods of time is really hard for me I am getting better, but I've been working on that specific strum (on and off) for years I try to relax, I do relax, but that makes holding onto the pick difficult And yes, I've improved, but not enough Suggestions?

I just bought a guitar about 3 weeks ago now, so I'm very much stll a beginner I try to be relaxed and hold it loosely as well as at an angle, but the pick keeps twisting between my fingers I have to still focus so hard grabbing these chords that I struggle getting the pick back in position at the same time Am I holding it too loose?
Comment from : sensiriti

3D Scribbles
I put a piece of painter's tape on wide end of the pick just to give it some friction for my fingers I had difficulty keeping it loose and in correct angle, had to keep correcting my hold of the pick all the time That bit of friction helped me a lot
Comment from : 3D Scribbles

Ishwar
Sir, changing the angle by little bit makes a lot of difference, it actually sounds better and feels more smoother But when I strum upwards it gets little weirdIs it normal? It kinda feels pick getting stuck while we are strumming upwardsbrAnd sir I'm really thankful that you have provided such an awesome content for us beginners Very grateful to have a teacher like youbrThank you!

Only thing I'm confused about, Do you keep the same angle on the up strum or reverse it?
Comment from : Jack Hargreaves

Gareth Smart
Who would have thought that bending your knuckle 20-30 degrees would be vital in strumming so well? I have been trying to work this out for so long with no progress And here’s the man with ALL of the answers to your technique problems to save me wasting any more valuable timebrAs I type this, I’m sat on the posture correcting cushion that Justins wife recommended a while ago, saving my back from aching Thank you again!brYou’re approach to life is inspiring

Comment from : chityin oo

skaybaltimore
I like the pick angle lesson -- thanks But I have some concerns about using the forearm primarily to strum rather than the wrist You say it's something for beginners, but to my way of thinking it's starting out with a bad habit because it's impossible to get speed and accuracy and control moving your arm vs your wrist Why not start out from the beginning with the proper technique, rather than starting out strumming with the arm only to later have to switch to a finer, more controlled wrist movement?
Comment from : skaybaltimore

David Chaplin
Thanks Justin, for being RIGHT ON MAN!!!!!
Comment from : David Chaplin

Nick van der Laan
You are a legend! I started practicing a few weeks ago and I started strumming without a pick because with a pick I would find it impossible to strum up So thank you :)
Comment from : Nick van der Laan

Summit Sparrow
What I noticed is that when I'm playing I either I have to wear a short sleeve shirt or roll my sleeve up so that my hand can "grip" the body Is that a normal thing? I've never heard anyone mention that the clothes you wear matter What I started doing to pick notes is to use my pinky to stabilize my hand so it doesn't slide around It sounds like this is a bad habit to get into Should I abandon that technique altogether and relearn from scratch, or is there a time and place where you want to use your pinky like that? Now that I'm more aware of it, I never really see other guitar players doing that thanks
