I will not buy a scope that has glass that comes out of China I'll take Phillipines or Japan over it any day, preference is USA, but willing to settle on japanese or Philippine glass as well Comment from : Neatfellen |
I’ve never had issues using the Christmas tree reticule to hold for wind out to 1000 I really prefer a more complex reticule because the worse that can happen with it is you just won’t need it They don’t obstruct your view at all really Comment from : Keenan Bartlome |
When I got into shooting mid 2000 I bought 2 nikon buckmaster 6-18x40 1/8 moa, target dot scopes less than $500 each new When I started with F-Class around 2008 one of them went on the f-class rifle and that rifle kicked a lot of butt People are shocked when they realise they got beat by an entire setup that cost less than just their scopebrI would love to get a higher mag scope but they pretty much just don't existbr1/8 moa (1 want 8 clicks for your 3)brtarget dot reticlebrside focusbrno BS like illumination, or funky reticlesbrSo I still use the nikonbrUnfortunately the tacticool garbage has taken over the market The current scope market is a dick measuring exercise Comment from : David B |

I've never purchased a scope for more than $150 I guess I'll never know what a nice scope is like I gasped spending $900 on and AR I love to shoot when I can and really enjoy and appreciate what I have I'm glad not all shooting items are as expensive as the items you're talking about Thank you for the video I did learn a lot ! I’ve had nothing but problems with Vortex scopes 😢made by Scopro Optical Co in Philippines and are sub $50 to produce but sell for $1k😮 Comment from : The Flat Rock |
I recon ill just keep using the so called crap that I can afford It seems to work well enough 700 bones is top end of what my circumstances allow Comment from : T Ballstaedt |
I disagree with the "turret" methd to quicky adjust for a shot Comment from : Arthur Shingler |
As far as the rust on the hex bolts, that's just cheap oxide coating on the bolts, not necessarily cheap rings Comment from : John Mayhugh |

cheap vs expensive optics, element might look okay in daylight but a swarovski will allow you to shoot an extra 30 minutes into dim light at each end of the day Comment from : Official Willy |
I don’t care if there’s “good glass” from China It could be the best glass in the world, but if I can find great glass from a country that’s not our enemy and communists, I’d rather not buy from China at all That’s why most of us prefer to avoid anything made in China Comment from : RubiconTSL |
I've an old benchrest rifle that shoots sub 1/4 minute groups with a sub-$100 scope from Weaver El Paso Tracks beautifully I have other scopes that won't hold in a bucket There are, however, some tricks involved Comment from : villagelightsmith |
Have a primary arms Orion and drop deer where they are standing up to 300 yards Good enough for me Comment from : Beekeeper847 |

Agree, if you don't know you know, don't spend 10,000 dollars for a scope on a gun that cost 700 dollars Till an expert tell you too! 😏 Comment from : whathahk |
Spent sub $500 on a primary arms slx with 65 reticle on my 65 and it works to 600 yards with the Christmas tree reticle Vortex crossfire ii 4x16x50 on my 7mm-08 with bdc reticle works to 400 yards Both are clearer glass to my eyes than a leupold that I went to purchase Think the biggest take away here is to burn the money/ammo to test your scope to see if it does what you want/ need from it I've beat the shit out of both these scopes in the woods for 7 years They both are durable, hold zero and do what I need them to do Comment from : redneck ninja |
Mil over moa Comment from : The Dueling Senator |

Jim, what is your opinion of the Element Optics Helix line of scopes? Comment from : Daniel Lee |
There is no equivalent Once you've looked through superlative opticsbrYou can not be made to change your mindbrCrisp, full field, spot onbrWall to wallbrYou pay for what you get, and the price keeps going upbrBuy now!!! Comment from : Gary Wemmer |

Comment from : Yolanda Lindsay |
Very informative brI feel like less is more Especially on the reticle brEven for bow hunting I went from a multi pin to a single pin Just learnt my holdovers or unders Comment from : Bryce Hiigel |
This is Quite Comical I grew up around alot of hunters, who used the old Weaver Strap steel rings, and they did just fine They bumped their rifles around and they held up You can go with reasonable Quality, and do fine This is the day and age of ExcessbrSo What is the Avrage Working Dad, suppose to use, or put on his kids gun?? I hunted with a guy , who shouldered his Remington 700 Rifle , with a inexpensive Bushnell scope on it, and the sling swivel detached, cauing the Rifle to fall like a axe to the ground The Scope impacted an exposed Rock , on the Dirt Two Track Road It dented the Scope with Authority He set up an old Bowling pin Quite some distance, and Nailed in in the Brunswick logo Case Closed!!! Comment from : Eugene Gress |
Let's not forget Carlos Norman Hathcock II (May 20, 1942 – February 22, 1999) was a United States Marine Corps (USMC) sniper with a service record of 93 confirmed kills he didn't have a scope with all the bells and whistles back when he was one of the best Snipers during the war Comment from : George Lewis |
8:46 - dude, those 3 fingers hahaha Comment from : Joe |
My rule for big game hunting:brNever take the first shot at big game at over 300 yards That's why it's called "hunting" And if you can't do that with iron sights, you need to see your friendly neighborhood ophthalmologist Comment from : TheHoneyBadger |
My rule for a scope:brScope price at least ½ rifle price Comment from : TheHoneyBadger |
There are also scopes with ¾", ⅞", and 26mm tube sizes Comment from : TheHoneyBadger |
"Christmas Tree" reticles only work in fixed power or 1st focal plane variable scopes In 2nd focal plane variable scopes they are lying to you unless the scope is set on the highest power Comment from : TheHoneyBadger |
Just like golf clubs, if you know what you need, spend the money, if you don't know from experience, no amount of cash is going to make you a better shot Comment from : Bear Gillium |

My 25 to 10 nikon pro staff has been the best scope I have ever had especially in low light conditions Comment from : edward linton |
I am yet to find any use for these scopes with a busy reticle I can shoot right on spot up to 200 yards with a fine duplex reticle brI wish reticle was something that could be changed easily Sometimes I run a cross good deals on scopes but when I look through it and see a reticle that looks like world's map, I leave it alone Comment from : SHAH |
Larger objective lens does nothing to “gather light “ Hardly measurable at all Comment from : Paul |
I do IV88's 1 shot zero, works great! Comment from : Marshall Jarvis |
t video I live in Maryland and would like to know if there is a course on learning to adjust and properly use the scope in my area Comment from : Alexis Gonzalez |
So your expert says “turrent” and perpetuates the myth of “light gathering”? Boo Comment from : Sixgunner dot org |
Everybody is looking for tacticool/military stuff nowadays Some details are very expensive but don't give any advantage in competitions I only choose my scopes by looking at the lenses & the clicks quality March is my preferred brand 👍 Comment from : BR |
I have been using shooting for 65 years, and I have found that depending on the range a fixed scope is the best It is the clearest for 50 yards to 200 yards 6 power fixed is best, for 200-500 yards 8-10 power fixed anything from 500-700 yards a 12 power fixed Anything after that is personal preference I would stay away from the 20-25 power fixed Your biggest challenge is computing (VI) Vertical Interval! Comment from : Jankman 1 |
I know a lot a equipment snobs Have to have a $2k score and still can't shoot I have always liked the Bushnell line and I am extremely comfortable taking 500+ yd shots on N American animals because I'm trained and know what I, and my rounds can do humanely I also have no problem taking 1000 yard shots at paper and non- American targets (Army trained Ft Benning 19longertime ago to 19longtimeago) Comment from : Blackwater Prepper |
These comments I agree with for Powder Burners but is not true in the airgun world brFor the Christmas tree reticle and scope tube - we in certain completions we cannot adjust turrets - so that reticle and bigger tube is completely necessary or your to be doing a lot of “guessing” Comment from : Billy D |
IOR Valdada Comment from : Jason Penzo |
I just came across a new brand of scope I had not seen before, "Huskemaw" They claim their windage and distance are both adjusted through a single knob, which you don't have to do any calculations And they are relatively inexpensive Their long distance 5-30/56 sells for $2,500 Do you know anything about them? I am looking to get one for my SAKO TRG 42A 27" 338LM Comment from : Mohsen Raghian |
“Rectal Linear” 1:55 br🤔 brLike the angle of poop projection? brSo many thoughts…… so many😂😂😂 Comment from : David |
So since it is the kind of scope used by the military to shoot people which is kind of the same a bear standing up! I guess you gonna have to tell them they got it wrong Right! 🧐😎 Comment from : johnber52 |
Very informative thanks Jim Comment from : Franky Walter |
The guy talking the metric system associating it with milliradians is wrong Milliradians had nothing to do with the metric system That in itself is a myth about optics!! Comment from : John C |
As for scopes: Expensive scopes are for “suckers” For ELR and a professionals they are worth it Otherwise a $500 - $700 scope with good glass & tracking are good enough for a $2000-$2500 rifle Lessons is another marketing ploy It’s not nuclear physics Spend the money on ammo and practice As with anything, the more you practice the better you get These guys ripping people off with useless expensive lessons, are not making anyone a better shooter Lol What a load of shit Comment from : Vince F |
The BS about the reticle distorting was hilarious That's not what happens at allbrJust goes to show that if someone has a bias, they will make excuses for itbrbrA tall tracking test will tell you if the turrets are working and if your reticle is accurate That's the actual truth Comment from : Lefty eh |
I do kind of regret buying a scope with the Christmas tree reticle , that was a deal breaker that it had to have one when I bought a nice scope and it had to be MOE as well that gave me limited options Now I have it but never use it because those tiny dots out In the middle of the view are too hard to focus on with my eyes Comment from : mike smith |
When I was buying a high end scope I heard you want a big tube size for a larger degree of turret adjustment range not light transmission Comment from : mike smith |
Larger scope body tubes are not only utilized for recticle travel Tube size can be a major requirement in the optical calculation of a scope construction in regards to allow for high zoom factors, low chromatic aberration, paralaxis depth, field of view etc etc Comment from : Knut Pohl |
1" tube scopes are not used for dialing? What the nonsense statement is that 😂 Comment from : Mladen Simovic |
All the blinky lights won't help if you don't have the basics Comment from : Fred brandon |
Simplicity is best Fixed power scope USO ST-10brAnd simple reticle Comment from : Tom spettel |
Interesting how many ‘purists’ poo hah illuminated scopes as a fad, unnecessary and a distraction Can’t help but remember how the ‘purists’ carried on the same 45 years ago about variable scopes Comment from : Boyd Allen |
I shoot airgun field target In this discipline the norm is dialing distance, and using 50x scopes brbrWhy 50x? Because we need that super shallow depth of field so we can use the side focus, with a very large sidewheel, to range the targetbrbrWhen shopping for a scope, I need a 50x scope, side focus down to 10 yards, and preferably is in 8th MOA or 20th mil clicks, because 01 mil clicks is too course of an adjustment for what I'm doing I also need the scope to have a decent reticle, tree style is of no use though This narrows it down to about 4 scopes that can be afforded by mortals and aren't crap, the Falcon X50, the Sightron Siii, the "Big Nikko" and the Delta Stryker A further 2 come to mind that are stupid pricey, the March, which is an 80X behemoth, the Schmidt & Bender, which had serious problems in it's first iteration, and that's about itbrbrA few older guys are running (40x?) Leupolds that need an additional lense that flips over the objective for short distances Comment from : Patrick |
Fabulous video, very instructive Thank you for the great interviews with the gurus of scopes, each one offering their sincere expertise to us neophytes Stay well Comment from : AMADO MATA |
When you say budget scopes I think of what I own I have never give more than $100 for a scope The Pinty I bought fore $50 has just under 1k rounds on it and I have taken it to 1000 yards Very clear and holds zero tracks very good and always returns to zero Bushnell Dusk and Dawn scopes are awesome hunting scopes also I guess to each his own Comment from : Shane Reed |
Awesome video!!! Comment from : Hope Williams |
700 bucks 😅s a cheap scope Come on I’m using a vortex diamond back for 200 Comment from : Douglas Nyhof |
Best VALUE ive got was a monstrum tactical G3 scopeFFP 4-18x for $230i got mine open box for $150 Ive tested it on my AK And now its on my 308 PA10no problems to report Waterproof, shock proof And nitrogen filled Also it comes with paralax adjust on the same power knob Other optics with the same features cost $700 plus! 😅 Comment from : Mobile Gamers Unite |
Why do people keep saying this stuff? Milradians (aka MILs) have nothing to do with the metric system It is an angular measurement that works equally well in imperial or metric units Comment from : Jethro3898 |
Heres one for you You dont need to spend $700 on your scope Ive known many people who bring down deer with scopes under the $200 mark Hell, one of my coworkers fills his tags every year with a $60 scope on a Winchester 270 Honestly, it comes down to distances I live in Northeast Texas, in the area known as the Piney Woods region Most wooded areas are choked with HEAVY undergrowth Most shots are well within 200 yards Hell, you could easily get by with good ol' iron sights, if hunting rifles other than lever actions still came with irons Comment from : nathan kindle |
1:05 he comes off sounding like a fud I believe this would happen on cheap scopes that try to mimic the Horus reticle style, but on a quality scope, I don’t buy it These have been out for decades and is even the official reticle fitted to the M24E1 used by the Army since 2010 I don’t think that would be the case if what he said was true Comment from : g1mpster |
Mils and MoA are neither metric or standard They’re both just angles (degrees vs radian) No faith in that guys answer Comment from : JM |
We used to "shoot the box" to check the tracking of a scope Zero the rifle/scope, go to a clean target, fire a shot, turn a number of clicks up (let's say 10), fire a shot, turn 10 clicks right , fire a shot, turn 10 clicks down, fire a shot, turn 10 clicks left and fire the 4th shot The 4th shot should be right in with the 1st If you have the 4 corners of a box, your scope is tracking properly Plus it's fun brCheers, Jeff Comment from : j k |
Thanks Comment from : brett landon |
I don't believe the Christmas tree reticle was ever meant to completely replace dialing the turrets It was meant to be a faster way for military shooters to make corrections and engage targets in a "time is life" environmentbrI also don't believe mil is better than moa or vice versa They're both systems of angular measurement and they both workbrI've run into a couple optic snobs Most recently the instructor in a LR class i took a few months ago We were just talking during down time and he was telling me about his super awesome Viper PST Gen 2 but the second i mentioned I've got an Arken SH4 Gen 2 he yells "ok, everyone get ready"brI'm not as good a shot as he is but if i were I'd be willing to bet my $400 optic can function as well as his $1300 one Comment from : PoliticallyInsensitive |
Great scope/glass talk Comment from : Spetsnaz Bear-Медведь Спецназ |
If the image is getting distorted out of the center into the 1/3 rings, it’s a junk optic and needs to be used as a doorstop Some budget (sub $1000) glass will track perfectly all over the glass There’s a reason our military branches are buying $4k-$6k optics for every precision platform Try a S&B, high end NF, older USO, ZC or Hensoldt optics on that test… Comment from : Mosquito Fleet Fishing |
Not throwing shade at all but when talking about the price of a scope they say what the max is and their minimum is already above my max i am very happy with my $500 Vertex scope i understand there are much better scopes out there but i could not see myself putting that much into a scope when all my hunts have been less than 200m Comment from : Allan Wilkerson |
I bought the expensive Leupold and the shit Nikko Stirling scopes The shit Nikko Stirling scopes always work take about ten minutes to bore sight and you don’t care if you break it Some of the modern scopes are like a hair trigger they pick up to much light at the wrong angle it moves to much you only have to see the outline of the animal not what it had for lunch while trying to look through a telescope that’s basically backwards through a lens that’s the size of your hand through poorly ground lenses Comment from : Indica2 |
horus and tremor 3 shooters will beg to differ i don't get confused easily so hold overs are always faster, i can follow up without getting lost and the amount that i need before the curvature of the lens becomes as issue is plenty and reduce zoom gets you more adjustment I use h59 for all timed long range shootingbrbras for the quality budget scopes out there for 5-25, why don't any of them have locking turrets? Most of these budget scopes due to style expose their turrets Why would i take any of these scopes for any application besides bench shooting if i can't lock or cap the turrets? i like being able to toss my rifles on a sling and run pretty much only my 6br varmint barrel krieger for benchrest has a exposed turrets For this reason m i have 5 eotech vudu 5-25sbrall with h59 Sorry but you can't hump an arken your hands will never be free if you're worried anything in the woods can brush up against your turrets Comment from : Mark Tse |
$700 Scope Pretty inexpensive wow, different world I guess Comment from : RB 2 |
I brought a "3 scope lot" on ebay for $60, don't know the make or model as it worn off, rings from Wal-Mart, not disappointed at 500yds still like iron sites better most of the time Comment from : Nathan Rendelman |
As a qual long range marksman, I can attest that the 1st subject matter expert was speaking from his @$$ Comment from : bingo oscar |
