Duolingo overdoes it with the gamification I switched to Babbel because it really got on my nerves Comment from : Tom Reiner |
Duolingo is way worse than babbel, you're just repeating the words, you get no depth, but Babbel is way much better and gives different scenarios Comment from : Juz rhyme |
I'm at 278 days with Duolingo Portuguese I feel my vocabulary is growing at a steady pace and I'm very comfortable with verb conjugations I don't mind the strange sentences that Duolingo uses I think the intent is to not allow you to anticipate the words in a sentence but you have to focus on the actual words in the clue The one area that I am lacking is time spent listening to the sentences rather than reading them I have been able to read a Brazilian newspaper for a long time but I still cannot hear what people are saying (even the most basic sentences) Overall, I like Duolingo Comment from : EV-YT |
Great Review Thanks Comment from : Anthony Curtis |
I’ve had “It is raining men” on Duolingo Comment from : How-to gamer |
duolingo really likes to make you naturally learn the vocab when i tried the dutch lesson, after i got to unit 2 session 1 i just kept seeing the same words like het and de and i just learned how to use them naturally also you can click the words to see what they translate to Comment from : overclocker28 |

Great video, very informative! Comment from : Caitlin |
Duolingo also tries to through in their toxic idealogical point of view through the phrasing of their lessons: I hate children is a common one in Norwegian, My mother doesn't know how to cook, my father is a nurse, etc If you take a subscription with Babbel, is the price inclusive of all languages? Comment from : A Rankin |
Is there heavy Denoising on your voice? Comment from : 19Stride |
Thanks for the video, by the way you can refill your hearts in the free version of Duolingo by doing simple review exercises or watching ads! Good luck on your learning everyone Comment from : nonsolonoia |
I've been using the free version duolingo for about two years and I love it, but I think I will try Babble as well Thank you for the review Comment from : TpyoDawn |

I want to learn German because my grandma was German and I wanted to go to Germany with her, but she ended up passing away a little while back I still intend to go to Germany though, just after I’ve completely learned the language rather than just the basics Comment from : MemoryGalaxy |

Very informative video I've been on the fence on which one to try And I like your idea on using both May just is the free version while paying for Babbel Comment from : Adam A |
I recently learned that duo heavily utilizes AI to create their languages lessons so when you get sentences like ''my foot is very tall'' that's why I have been using duo for french and there are so many issues especially with accent it drives me up the wall i also take classes on italki with a real person so i find the duo french audio to be very different than the teachers i work with also a lack of natural french Comment from : GorgieClarissa |
Very helpful review Strongly considering a babbel subscription and just trying to figure out which one to go with Comment from : JenniLaine |
switched to babbel after using duolingo for 2 years its so much more in depth and uses phrases that are important to know Comment from : A1 Video |
To me, the both apps are quite bad But Duolingo is free :) If someone wants to make the right language app he or she has to choose a different way Comment from : putin is a KILLER |
is it free? Comment from : kalkidan gobezie |
Duo sux No one finishes any of their courses It's not intended to teach language It's an advertising platform Period Duo does more harm than good Duo is ridden with errors that they will never correct Comment from : Brad Hedge |

Great review totally right on Duolingo there is zero grammar instruction but it is free and lessons are quick andgood for vocab and yept is kinda addictive and the ads are super annoying also the quizzes ask you questions on stuff they didn't teach you frustrating AF Comment from : Joe Reblando |

I'm really enjoying using Super Duolingo to learn Portuguese It does get repetitive, but it definitely has hooked me up I found your comment on grammar in Babbel interesting It's probably worth giving it a try once my learning habits are a bit more settled Combining both sounds like a great idea though 👍🏾 Comment from : Aryaváchin Dharmachari |
Hey John,I have watched some of your videos and I am using Super Duolingo to learn German and Spanish My wife's co-worker is using Babbel to learn French and he likes it and suggested I give it a try I research things before I buy so here I am Thank You for the video it was super helpful Comment from : ispguy2001 |
Thanks for the comparison I have been using Duolingo for a while and you hit all the right spots I will probably register with Babbel now but keep Duolingo as a fun one on the side I have been learning Italian for a while and the traveled to Italy Many phrases learned was not of great use I never had to tell anyone that sharks eat fish! Comment from : Denis Langlais |
Fast answer: Both suck! Comment from : Jefferson Araujo el políglota |
Thanks for this ! It confirms what i thought, but it's great to have your opinion I'm learning Spanish, but I teach English to French apprentices, so I need to decide which App would suit each person BTW : what do you think of Mondly ? I did the complete Spanish course prior to Babbel I found it it good vocab grounding for me, as a complete Spanish novice ( I did French and German at school ) Comment from : Helen Selliez |
Thank you for the tips I would also be interested to learn about if one offers languages the other doesn’t Comment from : Bender716 |
I picked babbel but some family members who use duolingo were saying not to copy the accent for some reason but for me i try my best to mimic the words as best i can Comment from : Daniel Loos Jr |
I’ve used Duolingo for nearly a year now and, while I find the ads tiresome, I love that I can do a lesson in three or four minutes every day I don’t think I could have kept my streak going this long if every lesson lasted 15 minutes I may also try Babbel, however, because I don’t feel I get good grammar instruction with Duolingo I wind up googling for grammar basics Comment from : jandipeach |
Duolingo is better Comment from : Funkrez |
I hadn't heard of Babbel before, but this really gives me something to think about Comment from : Cade Peterson |

I want to learn Portugiese for a school exchange Comment from : Marvin Schäfer |
thanks for this comprehensive comparison I think there's an extra dimension you might consider which is the age of the learner As a person in my 70's a gaming environment is likely to grate on me no matter how effective the app is at teaching whilst a more structured approach is likely to be a better fit to the way I like to engage Comment from : Mike Kaaks |
Babel is certainly better than Duo Lingo, the difference is that it is far less addictive brAnd that is a HUGE difference brAll the people going for Babel are much more likely to drop Comment from : Thomas Constant |
I think you failed to mention the extra apps that Duolingo has, like separate podcasts, and written articles in the app I have the super version so I am not sure if everyone sees them, but they seem to promote them a lot I wasted money on Babbel because at the time it wasn't available on my phone, so I had huge issues typing diacritical marks and things in Swedish I can just add a Swedish keyboard to my phone and it does a good job figuring it out That's why I switched about 3 years ago Speed of the lessons and being on my phone keep me engaged and I have over a 2-year lesson streak (with helps from gems to keep my streak freezes going), I couldn't bring myself to do Babbel lessons at all Comment from : ginkgobilobatree |
Think you forgot to mention Duolingo has a larger variety of languagesbrbr Eg Swahili, Chinese, etc Comment from : Issiah Cantrell |
It would be nice if babbel offered welsh Or Rosetta stone or pimsleur None of the others seem to offer it Comment from : Elizabeth |
I wanna learn American English and I think Babbel could help me to accomplish my dream ☺️brI'm a French native speaker and I'm capable to talk a lot in English, but I need to improve this with conversation exercises and with oral talking with someone who's a native American English speaker 😉 Comment from : Mathéo Brissez |

I recently decided to add babble after a year and a half on Duolingo Unfortunately, I am hard of hearing and I couldn’t get babble loud enough to hear I have Bluetooth hearing aids so the sound goes straight into my ears but even with that, I still couldn’t use it The folks at Babble were very considerate about refunding my money Comment from : Elaine goss |

I have had them both; for me, Babbel is better for retention… :) Comment from : grizzly deener |
I've been using Duolingo (off and on) since January 2020 If you just do it on the computer you don't have to worry about the ads and your mistakes HOWEVER, Duolingo used to be better They had a dictionary, community thread, a place where you could see meet-ups, pay for classes with native speakers, etc They recently chopped all of that for more graphics I will check out Babbel in the future I really DO want to learn more grammar, and have scratched my head at why that couldn't be incorporated into their lessons Comment from : Anna Maliszewski |
I plan on visiting Paris later this yearbrWant to learn a bit of French Comment from : KingTray |

My son sent me a link to Duolingo at the same time as I was receiving ads on social for Babbel I travel a lot and my hardest decision to this point had been which language to learn I was very pleased to find this video and the summary suggesting how to use them in tandem was super helpful as I was kind of thinking the same, but wondering if it would take away from one or the other Your suggestion that they complemented each other, or worked well for time management, really made sense! Thank you! Comment from : Helen Edley |
😊 Comment from : Christine Shannon |

Appreciate the update 👍🏼 Comment from : Johan Richards |
Little life hack the duolingo website doesn't have the life system so even in the free plan you can keep learning after you mess up a lot Comment from : Coleman Callaway |
I've been using duolingo since July I don't use the computer version, but on the app version, you can practice to earn hearts if you make so many mistakes that you run out So technically, you bcan/b keep practicing once you run out of hearts You just have to practice in the heart section Comment from : Susan B Sketchy |
French because I have friends that know French and I want to talk with the and I think that French is cool Comment from : Ben Lehr Yaish |
Hi! I would like to offer a correction to your video title, in the spirit of being helpful If you're comparing two apps, the question is which is better, not which is best Thanks Comment from : alwaysuseless |
I want to learn Italian so I can pass the language test CILS or CELI to obtain Italian citizenship Comment from : hulabug |
I've been using Duolingo for a couple of years now but generally just haphazardly Its been good to use due to the gamification that keeps me consistent with using the app I've ramped up recently so want to look at other apps to use to complement my learning So many to choose from and is very confusing to make a decision Comment from : Greg Lamb |
