Good tips! I should calculate how much money I've saved by making my own iced tea I have same container I've used for the last 11 years brAnother tip: I've made casseroles and frozen some of it for another time When I lived alone, I didn't want to have the same meal 3 days in a row! Comment from : Trumax |

I try to only buy what's on sale If it's not on sale this week, good chance it will be on sale next week Just wait Comment from : Yvonne Anstey |

Harris Teeter frequently puts their house-brand cheeses on sale Buy 2 Get 3 Free That lowers the unit cost from $350 per pack down to $140 per pack If you eat as much shredded cheese as I do it saves me a ton of dough Comment from : Adam Busenlehner |
I have a high veggie diet I love my steak but can't afford it so I buy ground beef instead Chicken is tasty but I don't buy the breasts, they are overpriced I get the chicken thighs with the skin on and they're cheaper and easy to make into any meal I like cheese but in moderation I occasionally have milk with cereal but I don't buy either very often I dislike eggs, they make feel sick and I can't stand the smell when they are cooked But if they are part of a cake as a binder or something like that, it doesn't bother me But really, who can afford to eat cake these days? I like the idea of veganism a lot, I actually went vegan quite a few years ago but I only lasted about 8 months I ended up being so sick and anaemic, my doctor nearly put me in hospital I obviously did it the wrong way so that's on me but I can't do vegan again, it's just not feasible for me I don't eat junk food though It's too debilitating to my health and it's insanely expensive as well I do like pasta, rice, beans, lentils and the like and add them to most dishes to bulk up my meals so I end up eating less and my grocery bill goes further Thank goodness for farmers' markets where I can buy fresh produce for cheap so whatever money I spend goes further Comment from : Audra Blue |
I love buying TVP from the bins! It doesn't go bad and it's perfect for chili and spaghetti sauce! Comment from : Karisa Kitty |

Nicole: I noticed that you have a side-by-side freezer/refrigerator That is one of the least efficient appliances there is The freezer space is very limited and will not accommodate large items or packages Go with the upper freezer or bottom freezer next time For those of us who don't do fresh vegetables that often for whatever reason, buy canned goods, like beans or spinach, in store brand cans There is no difference in the quality or taste of a green bean casserole between one made with store-brand beans and one made with name-brand beans Chances are they come from the same supplier and you pay 20-30 more for the name brand Try other store-brand items as well Some are as good or better, some aren't, but the only way to know is to try them For those non-vegetarian US folks; the only time stores put turkeys on sale is the last couple weeks before Thanksgiving, so buy more than one They don't do it at Christmas or Easter Turkeys will keep for at least a couple of years in a freezer and there are tons of dishes that can be made from a turkey, tons of them I bought 15 lbs of hamburger one time that was about 30 minutes away from going bad and had been marked down to half-price or lower I went home and made a big batch of chili and a big batch of taco meat and a big batch of Frito pie meat and froze them all They will keep for 2-3 months, maybe longer, in the freezer Potato soup, with or without meat, is fairly cheap to make and can be frozen Buy cheap ham after Easter that has been marked down and make navy bean soup with it after the big Easter meal Navy beans are cheap and you can add some carrots and celery and potatoes to enhance the flavor and stretch your food dollar and it too can be frozen And your dog will love you if you give them a big ham bone to gnaw on A butt ham has more meat on it than a shank ham Comment from : Timothy Johnson |

What is even better than buying hummus is making it at home, if you buy the canned garbanzo beans the bean water, AKA Auquafava, can be saved and used as an egg substitute Another great way to avoid waste and an easy/quick way to keep the refrigerator clean is only use up to about 1/3rd of the storage capacity and find creative ways to use up your items before going to the store If you chop up your produce into smaller sizes it will go farther, if you avoid consuming anything that requires some kind of food to go with it or anything that compels you to eat more, thus spend more , you might axe 🪓 those items from your personal inventory Comment from : Julia DPlume |
Sorry, but I think $257USD per month on groceries for one person is a LOT! So, that would be $1k per month for a family of 4, or $1,250 per month for a family of 5 😱😱😱 Comment from : Amy K |

Nicole have you tried chickpea "tofu" - dead easy to make (much simpler than tofu) - jsut water, chickpea flour, turmeric and salt (I also add curry powder) Many yt videos and online recipes for it Makes great vegan egg salad or scrambled non-eggs Comment from : Ros |
Bananas and avocados - I store ripe bananas in fridge- the skin turns black but the inside stays perfect Avocados - I store ripe in fridge and they last longer for me, if cut I store in closed container with cut side down to block air, of course only a couple days max Comment from : Ros |
Keeping greens fresh - I have done well with keeping them in a salad spinner in the fridge, I wash, spin, empty out water at the bottom of the spinner, cover and put in fridge My greens stay crisp and ready to use for 7 to 10 days Great for leafy greens, green onions, herbs, parsley, prepped carrots (peeled and cut) Cilantro/Coriander and watercress don't last as long because they are more delicate (also spinach) I think celery did not work well Comment from : Ros |
I use cashback apps, yellow sticker discounts (never fear the expiry date!) and gift cards earned by taking online surveys to get to a zero spend food budget I stockpile discounted dry goods when I see them for sale and scratch cook almost everything to make the most of what I can get There aren't many bills left I can control this year, but this is one of them Comment from : Work In Progress |

Lol 😂I do the revolving grocery list too in the exact same way!!! But it’s not JUST FOOD ITEMS Anything I need or am looking for shorts my son in the sizes needed, a fan for the dining room, etc I have it on my “To Do” app It’s scary how many lists I have on that app but the list of needed/looking for items on my grocery list (tho I do make sure the food items are up top - you can star the items that you want at the top of the list … totally a game changer for me) Comment from : LifeBeyondTheSalary |
You should freeze bread when you just buy it, that way you have fresh bread when you defrost it Don't freeze it once it's already gone dry If you have stale bread you can better make croutons or toast out of it So if yiu want to preserve bread and keep it fresh freeze it on the same day as you buy it Comment from : C M |
This is still expensive 😂 Comment from : maypong2007 |

One thing that applies to vegans also applies to omnivores…when your diet is mostly whole food sources, groceries are much cheaper and you can safely ignore 90 of everything the store wants to sell you Tips for meat eaters: keep your freezer full! Wait until the meats you want are on sale, and bulk buy Once you’re home portion everything out into recipe or portion sizes and freeze Meat is cheaper when you’re your own butcher and freezers work more efficiently when full After that just “shop” from your freezer for a while Our household only needs to buy meat maybe once every 3 months Comment from : Nyondo Nadi |

Hi Nicole! One thing you might want to make at home is hummus! it's so easy to make at home, a can of chickpeas, some tahini, garlic, lemon juice, sea salt I make it in the Cuisinart and it's so good and so easy! I think it costs me about $110 (US) to make a full (one can of the chickpeas) batch Comment from : Sheila M |

1 RE: the tomato:; Vivipary, Latin for Live Birth It is the term for plants that begin growing while still inside or attached to the mother plant 2 I LOVE how you switched it up by filming in different areas of your home 3 Food Panty or Food Bank I don't know the "rules" about going to the food bank but I bet it is open to all people I'm a senior citizen and my friend volunteers at the local food bank He is always sharing food with me that he brings home to share with us "old folks" Lot's of fruit and veggies It helps supplement my food bill Comment from : R Brown |
What is super sketchy: I have been to grocery stores who use different units to price out food for different sized packaging so if you are not paying close attention you might think an item is cheaper when really you are almost literally comparing apples to oranges! Totally nuts and relentlessly immoral, IMO ALSO, I like tip # 19 a lot I think I will implement this tactic, as well Seems like a reasonable compromise to have with yourself :) Comment from : Rachel Aumann |

I cook with my slow cooker It's really easy I can make a weeks worth of food and I only have to use it a couple of times a week It takes about 20 minutes each time to prepare and I throw everything in the slow cooker it's ready about 5 hours later It's halved my shopping bill because im not buying ready meals anymore Comment from : Gary Robinson |

I know everyone has been experiencing extreme food price inflation, but I've been actually experiencing extreme food price deflation For one I've mastered the art of buying food from food outlet stores It's a goldmine!! First of all, remember: Sell by, freshness and best by dates are all basically BS They are put there by the manufacturers to get people and stores to throw out their products so the manufacturers can fill up the pipeline with more products and help their bottom line Pasta is good for three years past those dates as are soups Tuna is good for years, etc But they sell this stuff 20 for a dollar (USD) when they hit those dates!!! Whenever I see a good product on sale, I'll Google how long it's good for past the freshness, sell by or best by dates It's stunning how long these products are actually good for Years a lot of the time! And another thing I've mastered is the art of blender meals For example, at breakfast I'll just blend up a cup of oats, protein powder and a banana I chase that with my fish oils, multi-vitamin, CoQ10 and a whole bunch of other stuff But I don't have to turn on my stove or oven and the ingredients I buy are relatively cheap! I save a bundle from going out! I even get my vegetables by just throwing a buck's worth of frozen, mixed veggies in the blender and I call it a V-20 Blows V-8 away And again, I don't have to spend money on energy to cook it But there are multitudes of ways to save on your grocery bill, taking a nutrition class can really help But I can honestly say that at the moment my food bill is not a problem, I'm not worried about eating healthy or enough yet (knock on wood) Comment from : Endorphin Rider |
Also cheaper products are on either a top shelf or on the bottom shelf The products at eye level are more expensive Comment from : Angela Aitchison |
I always chop my old and wrinkly tomatoes and make brushetta out of them The oil and vinegar preserves them that way and honestly they end up lasting another 15 weeks in the fridge! Comment from : Veronica |
We have a few discount stores that i always go too Just have to look at expired dates, since some are even from 2022! I dont have a problem with something a few months past, unless its dairy, etc, obviously My problem with it though is that its hard to pass up a good deal, whether i need it or not, like 4 candy bars for $100, for example😬😅!brGreat video Nicole, thanx! Comment from : Lisa Axe |
As a fellow Cdn cheapskate, I have to agree with most of the points you made We are a family here, so I have to be even more vigilant with the prices You've mentioned that veggies are relatively "cheap Not sure what are you are in, but a Cauliflower here sells for $699 Cdn and a watermelon for $15-, so I avoid getting fruits and vegetables in the grocery store all together, Instead we go to the flea market every Saturday and for about 10, 15- bucks, I come home with 3, 4 bags filled with fruits and veggies I find Making a grocery list is a a recipe for over spending Just arm yourself with flyers, so you can have your store price-match and buy only item that are on sale! There are some staples however you can't avoid, like Milk, eggs, etc Again it's a family here We spend about $400- Cdn month on food which is low in toady's standards for a family of 3, however we rarely eat out and we cook daily I also get some of the meats we cook at a butcher, instead of the supermarket Sore meats are good in large packaging, which I divide and freeze in portions we can manage to prep Things like coffee, I get that in outlet stores (best before) labeled, and I brew my own coffee and seldom get one from Tims or SBucks, Thanks for the tips Nicole Comment from : Giardintek |
