Let me simplify: A plan is what you can control, which will get you only so far A strategy is being born into the right family or stealing enough money to bribe the right official Plan all you want, but you better have a strategy Comment from : Whatisreal? Knowtheformula |

Typical professor lost in semantics and out of touch with the world Time to get back to actually doing the job United Airlines has 5x the net income of Southwest Airlines so saying Southwest is “winning” is subjective as hell brCompanies don’t just build factories for the sake of it, obviously they plan to sell product Comment from : Thought_it_up |

This reveals how money dominates our teaching and our thinking It explains why we are incapable of developing a strategy to avoid climate breakdown and ecosystems collapse At no point does Professor Martin indicate any awareness that humanity are exceeding the carrying capacity of Earth, and that salvaging this dire situation needs to take priority over making money This little animation will help anyone who wishes to understand how we might develop a strategy to dig ourselves out of this dangerous direction youtube/yyEEJGoaLd4 Comment from : Barbara Williams |

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:brbr00:27 📊 Strategic planning is not the same as strategy Many business plans lack a clear strategic focus and often consist of a list of activitiesbr01:25 🧠 A true strategy involves making integrative choices that position a company to win in a specific competitive landscape It requires coherence, doability, and a theory of why it will succeedbr02:23 💡 Planning deals with controllable resources and costs, while strategy focuses on achieving competitive outcomes driven by customer preferences, which are beyond a company's controlbr05:42 🏆 Successful strategies are about winning in a segment by offering something better than competitors Southwest Airlines is an example of a company that implemented a winning strategy by focusing on cost leadershipbr07:04 🤝 Embracing strategy can be uncomfortable because it involves uncertainty, but it's essential for organizational growth and success Great leaders accept the ambiguity of strategybr09:00 📃 A successful strategy can often be summarized on a single page, with a clear focus on where to compete, how to win, required capabilities, and the logic behind it Continuously refine and adjust the strategy as needed for the best chance of success Comment from : YT Pah |

I’m not sure why this video was recommended to me, but it resonates with my work I’m an instructional designer who used to be a curriculum designer, and I always explained the difference as curriculum design (CD) being the “what” and instructional design (ID) being the “how” What I will say now is that CD is the plan and ID is the strategy Thank you! how comes the movies always say a plan of action, not a, say, strategy for actions it’s semantics cos it’s the same darn thingbrbrever watched a movie where the characters expect things to go as “planned”?????? they call it a “plan,”but in spirit, they strategize so they can maintain dominance in the end guess when it’s on a personal level, things are different from when a group of people work on a large companybrbrgreat vid, tho the clarity is appreciated Comment from : Nguyenkhuong Tran |

The simple distinction is that is plans end in competition while strategy ends in victory For example, if I plan to build a house, this will involve external elements and uncertainty, but its still only a plan Victory only occurs once you have defeated someone or thing Simple test, you claim you have won but can you point out who you have defeated Comment from : Ross Fraser |

|
“Plan your work and work your plan”brStrategy is nothing more than how you’re going to implement the plan When he explained what was going on with Southwest Airlines he laid out their plan If you have a strategy with no plan, how you’re going to attain your goal? I’m not sure how you can say that strategies more important than the plan Comment from : David Clawson |

Planning: things you can do Strategy: Theories you pay way to much for 20 something consultants to present with a false sense of confidence and self-proclaimed expertise that can only be gained from an MBA program taught by professors who have never been in industry and just write papers or launched a business before the internet really took off At the end of the day, it really just depends on your definition of words Comment from : J E |

I think that many people will take away from this video is that planning 'is meh' Nothing could be further from the truth brI agree that strategizing is way different from planning And it's way harder to get right - as mentioned But one is not the substitute for the other - both ways You will still need a plan to implement your strategy Comment from : ThemoreThemerrier |
|
I believe strategies should include planning because from the definition you presented, plans consider one of the choices or (Steps) to achieve certain goals Otherwise, it could be just theories without materalizing them into practical steps tied with time Please correct me since I see that there is no need to distiguish between them because of that Strategies are embed planning! Brothers and Sisters, God loves us so much that He sent His Son Jesus Christ for us, who, bled and died on a cross for us to redeem us from death, to gain life everlasting, for those who put their trust in him And what's more, he has risen, and is willing to call you to repentance (correction) and as his witness, by his grace indeed "For it is by grace you have been saved" Jesus loves you, God cares for you! Strategy Cares about the ends what and where we want to be, planning is an enabler to achieve your end state Comment from : Reflective-thinker |

This is great and very informative It improved my understanding of the concepts for the most part I did struggle with a few things though One is, at 4:48 the speaker describes actions that Southwest took They all sounded like planning to me Flying point to point, using one type of aircraft, not serving meals - those are all things they could control, similar to building a factory Please help me understand why this was an example of strategising rather than planning? Comment from : Ntuthuko |
|
I guess This is academic speak The reality is nobody cares Folks want results, it doesn't matter what you call it Typical overanalyzing semantics Just get it done Comment from : Art V |

This was absolutely great! I am about to start a micro-manufacturing business A single-page strategic outline will help me to both explain to people what I want to achieve AND manage the progress with an eye toward our end goal Thank you so much! Tim Comment from : Lightweight is Everything |
|
All due respect to this gentleman he spends more time parsing the meaning between the words strategy and planning But in the end it's not about what you call them it's about what you do This example of Southwest Airlines was not because a bunch of people sat around defining the word strategy vs Planning and knew exactly what they mean It was about what they did to improve their company They could have call their actions, which resulted in improving and growing their business, planning instead of strategy but the results would have been the same regardless of what they called it Comment from : M S |
|
Thank you for this video As someone who is a natural planner and comfortable with that I was always shocked by the outcome because not everything went to plan I realized now that affected me in the workplace because I was just focused on the job on not the bigger picture This helped put things into a different perspective as I look for employment Thank you so much Comment from : Rache Williams |

|
So I guess strategy, by what this video presented is "why" to do and "how" to do, whereas planning is "what to do" They're all related maybe planning is more tactical and granular, whereas strategy is the overall big picture Nice Comment from : Renosance |
|
Great points Sometimes, people run straight to planning before identifying the "why" and "how", as an organization I concur, that strategy is the basis of thought which leads to great plans of action ,and moreover, reduces uncertainty By considering the current state of business, it's capabilities and/or the best applicable approach, realistic and desired plans can ensue Comment from : BlessUp |

Strangely, I've yet to experience any company genuinely 'improve its customer experience' in the widest sense I have experienced many companies 'minimising transactions costs' which translates to removing costly staff and replacing them with computers and websites Absolutely fine for simple, routine transactions but totally the opposite to improving the customer experience where a more complex problem has arisen Strategy? Planning? For me, as a customer, it's just pointless and irritating jargon when all I want is genuine customer service NOT automated BS Comment from : Peter C |

100 I seem to have spent most of my years in senior management - commercial and non-profit - fighting against the fudge of "strategic planning", which results in neither strategy nor planning being done well, let alone in harmony In particular, for non profits, attention to strategy shines an essential light on the organisation and its purpose
br
brI suggest that many non-profits tend to systematise themselves from the bottom up - as they develop from the first simple, informal "let's do something about this" initiative into a more structured, long-term organisation Each layer of organisational thinking - planning (including OD), strategy, mission and up to vision - tends to be considered and added only if and when the status quo becomes blatantly unmanageable or problematic, or if it is demanded by a board or funder As a result, these are seen not as fundamental building blocks for an effective organisation, providing essential focus and clarity internally and externally, but as unwelcome, time-consuming chores, diverting energy from the organisation's real business And inevitably, working from bottom upwards throws up many instances where the sum of the parts does not add up to a coherent whole, yet there is no higher logic by which to order the parts better or broker objectively between competing local interests
br
brMaking the time to stand back, and to consider and develop these layers of organisational thinking from top down - ie the other way, strategically - is possibly one of the most valuable things a non-profit can do to ensure its sustainability It enables organisations to be as clear about what they don't do as about what they do (so helping avoid mission creep) It crystallises the "hymn sheet", giving the whole team a common understanding and language, and the brand the power of consistency Each layer, if done properly, provides a powerful overarching logic for decision-making at the layer below it, making the whole process faster, simpler and better Comment from : RobCH |

In a past life working at a corporation they’d run us through multiple classes run by consultants Several times these consultants encouraged us to “think outside the box” when we tried that management quickly shut us down It took me a while to understand that managements job was to minimize risk even though those actions reduced profitability and sales Comment from : andrew wolf |
|
Does this mean a manager should only create strategies and not plan the steps? Comment from : Ravi Singh |
