Will Brown
I am a self taught guitar player and have been playing for about 15 years I do well with myself or with my family, just not with others Even practicing with a metronome I find my self slowly speeding up and not staying consistent It is very frustrating from somebody who has played as long as I have Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
Comment from : Will Brown

Lowdenjim
The guitar masters I've studied don't strum from the elbow with straight up/down arm movements - they strum predominantly from the wrist and maintain much closer control of their fingers over the strings Progressing from strumming to finger style, and combining the two, is achieved by keeping a reference point for your hand in relation to the individual strings, and this is very difficult if you have a "free-floating" arm waving up and down!
Comment from : Lowdenjim

saraton
Great pointers I really like you start from a beginner point of view It gets nauseating when I see advanced guitarists only interested in showing their own skills
Comment from : saraton

Mugabi Rita
Justin I love your ascent and your cap
Comment from : Mugabi Rita

Albert
Justin, I think tab alone goes back to tudor times, and the beginnings of notation are from Ancient Greece and Roman times?

Michele Moneywell
I am glad he addressed pick vs no pick, ideal pick thickness for a beginner, and using a light touch I also learned from the wrong strumming examples Seems the best route to go is practice the most common strumming pattern D, DU, &U, D until it becomes natural Maybe using a phone metronome app is a good idea too He says we are inborn with rhythm, but I think some of us have to work on it a bit, or a lot 😁
Comment from : Michele Moneywell

Isabelle Barrett
i'm starting to think i'm like illiterate for rhythm haha, i'm really struggling with strumming! i find the upstrums really hard to get and keeping my hand moving (no matter how hard i try and make it)

Richard Cooper
Something that helps with strumming is watching your hand in a mirror, placed in front of guitar, as you strum Any reflective surface works, just so you can see the broad movement

La Su
Turning wrist or up/down arm? Which one is more effective? I played guitar when I was student and play until now with turning wrist when playing such rhythmic pattern (I played later piano and synthe so not very good at guitar) But for strong movement strong sound, I still move up and down the arm I saw some videos recommending to rotate the wrist instead of moving with the arm up and down (like here in this video) What about your opinion you as experimented guitar players?
Comment from : La Su

OGGRIM
I’ve been self teaching myself guitar for the past 6 months and never used a pic in my life it feels unnatural to me glad to hear my thumb strumming isn’t unusual

When strumming without a pick, what part of your hand should hit the strings on the up stroke?
Comment from : Nick Dunwoodie

Klaus-Dieter Müller
Dear Justin, two things I have noticed that you are using “a lot of arm” while strumming, I was always teached to rotate the wrist instead and use as less arm as possible … Know i am confused what’s rightbrbrThe second thing is that u are changing the angle of the plec while strumming is that on purpose?
Comment from : Klaus-Dieter Müller

Danny Brown
This is the best teacher ever! Thank you Justin!
Comment from : Danny Brown

jimmy2minutes
One thing that improved my playing almost instantly was using low tension strings I get Newtone ones They remove the element of having to press down so hard And sound brilliant They take away one element and that frees you up to do other things like singing I'm not selling them, but anyone l have asked to get them were amazed how easy playing became What ever helps in my opinion Your fingers will thank you Just have to practice the same They go out of tune alot till they bed in
Comment from : jimmy2minutes

Luana Levenhagen
This class is just fantastic! Thank you
Comment from : Luana Levenhagen

DonnyTheButterlord
I just realized, it isn't my strumming It's me playing and singing before memorizing the entire song's chords and lyrics and expecting the song to be played flawlessly
Comment from : DonnyTheButterlord

jenjam Studio
Thank you Justin for the tip about consistent strumming, keeping the arm motion going even when not touching the strings I've watched videos by other creators before, but that particular point was never so clearly noted Your communication and teaching style are just as fluid as you urge your learners to be with their guitars
Comment from : jenjam Studio

Desperado Van Adventures
I strum with my thumb but started of using a pick, tried going back to using it a few times but am too harsh on the strings, maybe with a bit of practise I could manage but as you say it really makes a lot more noise and don’t want to be a neighbour from hell - Great tips, thanks

Mark Brown
I think every guitar player needs to learn how to strum strum mean is important, but I prefer the finger style guitar method of straw mean it has bass lines in it it’s not as boring I guess that’s finger pickers or a totally different breed of guitar players I don’t sing, but I sure love making melody and harmony, one of the most Beautifullest finger style guitar songs I ever learned was hotel California by the eagles, this song is beautiful I love playing guitar if I had to strum all the time, I would be bored to death but you’re right it’s in a sensual to know how to stream Thanks for the video Have a great day😁👍🏼🎸🎼🎶🎵😀
Comment from : Mark Brown

Got myself a guitar 18 months ago and just been strumming ever sincebrbrFirst video I've seen about strumming Apparently I started off doing it totally wrong, but it's worked out anyway Sort of learned this strange flowing strum style long before nailing the consistent strumming it seems you're supposed to start withbrbrI use my wrist a lot I can play A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall as it sounds in the record version so that's good enough for me lolbrbrEdit: Nice Dancing with the guitar makes the consistent strumming really good Top tip, thanks
Comment from : Jo Ban

Robin Howlett
Richard Digence once said that strumming is the most difficult thing: six strings and you only have once chance to hit them all It’s so easy to miss out some of the ones in the middle

I am seeing a lot of videos of guitars players it looks like everybody is using an electric acoustic guitare well the sound is higher and gives higher sound instead of a regular accoustic guitar who's sound is softer and change the notes to use like more minor chords to sound it's like less aggressive ,naive and change inspiration it's my opinion thanks for sharing can you show us the both playing at a same song thanks
