Well, he was a monopolist who bought out all of his competitors Once he did that, he was able to raise prices as high as he liked due to no competition Fortunately, in 1912 the government cracked down on Standard Oil and in the process breaking it up into smaller companies, one of which is still in operation today (ExxonMobil)
