Pretty shure Mark isn't even thinking 'bout all of these when he created the riff, because the style is him Amazing lesson though make us realize the very deep and subtle intricasies of the artist Comment from : nersonangelo |
You can only ever play it wrong if you’re a slave to repetition… Comment from : Tom Fielder |
You don’t use a pick for money for nothing? Comment from : YoungPutter |
Sorry but hate this- it's heavy music IMHO- not MK's style ata all I hope I never hear it again Comment from : Terry Johinke |
You’re always spot on Would like to jam with you Comment from : Gibson Fender |
Is the guitar in standard tuning? I know knoppfler tuned to open G Comment from : Robloxobby |
Yes, Knoplfer is a master of subtlety Comment from : JB sparks |
Outstanding demonstration :) Nailed all the nuance and highlighted the stylistic 'in-the-fingers' elements Comment from : JLF |
Dude you really should have watched Pavel Fomenkov play this the correct way before teaching others the incorrect way to play, especially with a title like that You're wrong as well, very wrong when it comes to the right hand, and im quite suprised considering your skill level Perhaps you can do another video when you get it right 😂 wayyy too much use of your thumb here Comment from : S and L MV |

Thanks Paul, always Excellent!! Comment from : Juan Carlos Pastrana |
takes 20,000 hours to be god tier guitarist, but i doubt 20,000 lifetimes is enough to be knopfler Comment from : Taha Ashjari |
3:06 something must be wrong with me, it doesn't work Comment from : ambroz |
Damn; someone needs to let Knopfler know he’s playing the riff wrong! Comment from : Jonathan Bushnell |
A song you may look into doing for this series is the riff for 96 Quite Bitter Beings by CKY I know its a bit heavy for your channel But it truly is a beautiful riff And though I havent looked in a long time, I never found a tab that plays it the way the band actually plays it And if you olay it the way Darren Miller actually wrote it You realize ho even more gwnius the riff is Comment from : timmzzzz88 |
I learned this song when I was 16 years old And surprisingly I got it down pretty accurately The only thing I do differently is the slide from the B to C I don't make a full power chord I just use the top two notes and get rid of the root To me it seemed to fit the structure of the rest of the riff better And as you are displaying, I felt like I could add a bit more zing by doing it that way brbrAlso throughout the entire song, the riff changes subtly the whole time through Little accents here and there It's one of the hardest but easiest things to master lol Thank you for this lesson I've always wondered if I was playing it even close to right Comment from : timmzzzz88 |
Dude where’s my guitar!brThanks for this deeper dive into this ‘less is more’ Knopfler masterpiece It’s always best to turn it down a bit and expose yourself to the dynamic nuances of the music rather than cranking it and drowning out the technicalities ‘in the name of rock’ as so many amateurs do I am still learning Sultans after about 10 years (!) but I now struggle to use a pick (I got black mountain so I don’t drop them!), but I think a lot of that signature Mark Knopfler sound also comes from the long bendy thumb that rests and picks out those bass notes too It’s almost like handwriting, but on an instrument None of us will truly mimic himbrAwesome content as ever sir! Comment from : Andee Green |
I think there might be an extra element in this riff (i didn't check this video meticulously to see if it's there) I'm not sure, but he might also 'pinch' the string, playing one string by plucking it with thumb and finger at the same time, thumb and finger about, say, half an inch apart This gives a very distinct sound So two fingers at the same time for one note on one string But it happens very quickly, so it's hard to see Comment from : Frits van Zanten |
After learning this song i got chicks for free Comment from : Adeesh Hegde |
imaging how confusing it was when people tried to learn it in the 90s/80s, when all you have is the cd and some printed out tabs:) Comment from : jsm607781 |
hahaha 2:50 alone was a like worth Comment from : MardyAss |
I love your passion to play riffs ans solos 100 correctly It's not that easy to play your version, but it's interesting to see what is possible with perfectionism Comment from : Matze |
My dad can make this sound perfect He explained the trick was to silence the strings harder with the right hand and to find the places to pick dynamicly with the pads or tips of the fingers Its really hard to get it there but im comparing it to the old man so 🤷 Comment from : Kingsway |
Here you can see very good from about 8:40 the way Knopfler plays it Different from the way Paul plays itbrNo quarter notes thumb-movement (only the first two notes) but the index finger plays the second notebrThumb almost the entire riff just half notesbrbrbr youtube/_zAhnr97hvM Comment from : André Orsel |
Paul was not suprised by the riffs but the racks Comment from : methenybestfan |
So many people say sultans of swings is the greatest guitar tiff of all time Rick Beato for exampelbrSo Mark knofler is the King ❤❤brLove the riffs the solos Totally unique Sound and style brHe is the best……… The end Comment from : Thomas Ring |
Fully agree with you Learn the song perfectly because that makes u better at playing but when the song is written by a guitar god, u also sound better than the half arsed attempt! Comment from : Tasjudoka |
The most obvious thing You’re missing is the Bb on the D string when you play the F on B string Once you here it you can’t not hear itbrGood effort though 👍 Comment from : PABLOS PICKIN PARLOUR |
I’m really struggling with one, I’m using the tabs from your Patreon but I just get it to sound right Comment from : ben6993 |
If you did a video on sultans of swing that would be sick Comment from : Jordan Neal |
I appreciate the details in this and the point about getting to the subtleties instead of just managing to copy riffs in a crude way Now you're on your way to getting money for nothing and chicks for half price But there's a big speed bump and a mountain range after that The really tricky thing is this: Anyone with a modicum of skill and hours of effort can copy the basic sound of an iconic riff It's inventing such riffs, with the genius and the subtlety of an epic riff, that separates the truly creative folks from the common hacks On a more technical note, and not being an expert guitar player, it seems like your right hand technique is lacking the distinctive plucking with index and middle fingers that characterize the Knopfler style That is, he plucks firmly using upstrokes with those fingers, which I think you do at most halfway, probably because of not being used to finger-picking as Knopfler plays Halfway plucking doesn't achieve the same sharpness or resonance Knopfler briefly demonstrates and talks about how he achieved the sound in a video on this site--Mark Knopfler Guitar Stories, Clip 3 You can see and understand his approach in just a few seconds Comment from : SurfWriter |
Let that B-C slide happen in its own good time Don't rush it Comment from : Knute Rife |
Hello Mister Paul Davids I'm Franz here from Brazil-Sao Paulo-SP I was in awe of the way you tackled the subtleties and details of this work by Mark Knoplfer (indeed, he is the King) You were very realistic in guiding any guitarist who intends to perform this song I am in full agreement with you I'll try to get there, at least close to 70 Big hug, congratulations and thanks for the class Comment from : Franz Baptista |
There is literally a video of him showing how he does it this isn’t it Comment from : Hike Bot |
Very,very useful!brThanks! Comment from : Toshko |

I got so carried away by this video, I completely forgot about my custom kitchen delivery I had this morning Comment from : John Wilkes Booth |
Another great video Pleased to see your commitment to getting things spot on How about a deep dive in to a Suede / Bernard Butler riff? I would recommend the solo on Metal Mickey or the whole of The Wild Ones which is really beautiful Comment from : Nathan Livings |
The only part I can't do is having a Les Paul by clapping my hands 😁 Comment from : İsmail Çift |
Mark Knopfler is left-handed, and plays right-handed I don't play guitar, so I'm working without a net here, 🙂 but sometimes I think the way he uses his dominant hand is part of his guitar magic 🎸 Comment from : DMorgan |
i think this riff is right above why georgia why and a little easier than neon (and snow) it's right there in betweenbrIve played why georgia and next i'll play this one Comment from : Prabhas Joshi |

If you don’t have time to do it right, when will you find time to do it again? - John Wooden, UCLA Basketball Coach Comment from : Creeper Creepo |
How about figuring out how the lick was originally created? I'd like to know its roots Also, I'd be willing to bet he never really played it exactly the same over the years, so absolute perfection to the original recording wouldn't be necessarily needed, IMO Comment from : Monkeybar Monkeyman |
2:56 😂😂👌 Comment from : Ronán0087 |
Honestly, at 3:27, the sound that they can't recreate, is most likely a tube going bad How do I now? My H&K has a tube that's going bad and the resulting sound is a half cocked wah Comment from : J M |
Why do so many talented guitarists show you a note-by-note way of playing a riff, but don't leave a link to a downloadable way to print it out? Comment from : Robert Rosas |
On the Dead Wax channel Mason Stoops breaks down pretty neatly why so many people fail to replicate this riff Comment from : leung |

hey Paul, I'm a pro guitar-player from Vienna/Austria Have to say that you make my "teaching-Live" much easier and most of all - if my students see you (or other YouTube-Guys) teaching the exam same sh 😉 - they suddenly believe what I'm talking about YouTubers rule their world (or Insta or TikTok oretc) THANKS FOR THAT Comment from : giare big |
But why do so many people play it wrong? You don’t answer the question Comment from : D F |
the moment you realise how far off your ' I play by ear version' is! Knopler plays without a pick and the result is these really full riffs and progressions with loads of phrasing and nuance etc which are very hard to replicate perfectlyunless your PD (Paul Davidsnot Puff Daddy) Thanks as always mate! Comment from : Mark Shields |
I mean you are playin the riff wrong aswell So what are you talkin about Comment from : orto brünn |

This is the third time that I've learnt this and bfinally/b it's starting to sound great! So many thanks Paul Comment from : Craige Bevil |
Regarding Paul saying at the end that you will learn more by learning a song EXACTLY the way it's recorded, I recall an interview with John Frusciante of the RedHCPeppers and he said that he forced himself to learn a really hard Zeppelin song absolutely note for note as a way of getting into game shape before he went on tour so yeah, Paul's got a point Comment from : Gnosis2078 |
Sounds great brI think I’m playing it right 🤣 Comment from : Ian Forsyth |
I just want to know who the girl at 2:22? Comment from : Matt Eberly |
