Great talk thanks Comment from : Hans Frankfurter |
What a deeply fascinating talk - and OMFG, the load of butthurt in the comment section, oozing of "white fragility"! Comment from : GorillaGuerilla🇺🇦 |
Well, if we are heading historically correct perspectives, we should mention a few things about Arabic science of the Middle AgesbrAll of it was appropriated from Zoroastrian, Persian and many others cultures that accidentally were not massacred during the Arabic Islamic expansion The only "contribution" was the Arabic language, which made it easier to transfer the knowledge Comment from : Master Bedroom |

iWe are going to talk about "serious problems that exist"/ibrHere we have 3 wrong statements to begin with Comment from : Master Bedroom |

Why are people paid for this drivel? Love a lot of Gresham lectures but is this not just pseudo-intellectual resentfulness? Comment from : T C |
'mathematical texts from all over the world'? Really? Antarctica? Australasia? The Amazon? Very sloppy writing from a mathematican'brbrMany cultures never got as far as counting to ten or writing, let alone producing mathematical proofsbrbrIf we teach history properly, let's teach the abject failure of sub-Saharan Africa to grasp the concept of isosceles triangles before colonialism and the introduction of Western thought Comment from : Steven Carr |
Wonderful video! Comment from : shubh mishra |
This a great and needed talk I am not sure that the title is appropriate, as there are several approaches to proofs even in Western mathematics What constitute a proof in mathematics is not always clear Comment from : sonja k |
Very disappointing Gresham went down this crooked path So woke, so ideological I'm not unsubscribing yet but I'm not far off Comment from : Gregory Kent |
Thank you for the nice presentation Comment from : Admin K |
What a load of cobblers! Comment from : Lluís Bosch Pascual |
Ultra-nationalism is surging through India It wouldn't surprise me at all if Keller received a hefty 'research grant' from the Indian government to present this stuff Comment from : fact gasm |
Plus, minus, times and divide are four of the best known mathematical symbols, but what about the symbol for 'equals'? Who devised that? A 16th century mathematician from Wales named Robert Recorde and it's used in every equation and computer language in the world, but how many people knew that? Agathe Keller? Perhaps it doesn't suit her agenda to educate the public with little nuggets like that Comment from : fact gasm |
Hence MAGA Comment from : fact gasm |
Professor Agathe Keller is an historian and not a mathematician Speaking as a maths grad myself, I think she's making this disgraceful slur against the mathematics community simply to attract attention to herself Comment from : fact gasm |
Dear oh dear - utter nonsense I'm afraid 😝! Comment from : Rick Jensen |
I guess this woman earns 10 points in woke social credits for using "Decolonise"brin the title Comment from : AQuietNight |
To me, this is a bs woke lecture This woman should take elocution classes Who is she? What is all this going to prove? If the proofs are correct isn't that what they're supposed to be? Surprised at Gresham College Isn't it what sciences do, share knowledge? Don't waste your time Comment from : Joseph Nardone |
And just like that, I'm unsubscribed 'Decolonisation' is nothing but revisionism to satisfy the woke zeitgeist Comment from : Jon Smith |
Disgusting woke nonsense tainting something so pure as mathematics Very sad Comment from : anonjan82 |
Anti poof ? Im triggered Comment from : Dandylion 1001 |

TL;DW for people who didn't bother watching the whole thing: brbrThe modern notion of what a proof is was developed in the 19th/20th centuries discounting the diversity in mathematical thought in Arabic/Indian/chinese/greek maths This narrow definition was applied to non-european mathematical texts, and when found to be lacking in such proof was held up to mean the superiority of Euclidean maths (and by extension, Europeans) - NOT European maths btw as the speaker says there was a diversity of thought even among the Greeks with some being closer in their ways of reasoning to the Indians And even among the Indians there were some who reasoned more like the Greeks The point being, these were not homogenous Comment from : Acidrayne |
It is amazing to see so much hate is filled by those so called conservatives in the comment here If they do not want the truth to be spoken, why not go back to your zero-less Roman numeral system and try to count your just 1 trip to groceries? Comment from : BobbyTacticsCode |
Lets consider the notion of "decolonisation" here She is saying it is colonial for European universities to focus on European history, which makes no sense, unless you realize that the people who are promoting views like that are usually just anti-European and the language of colonialism, white supremacy is their chosen way of rhetoric (I did not watch the lecture, it might be a fine historical lecture for all I know, but that is irrelevant to the point about the terminology) Comment from : John Smith |
How to post a worthless talk on a video channelbrbrAnybody who talks about "decolonising" in this sort of context is a leftist activist of a particularly vile type It's unfortunate such a talk was included in the Gresham Lectures as it seriously debases their qualitybrbrStill here we are Every lecture in this series is tainted by asssociation Serious scholars should think twice before associating themselves with an institution which displays such poor judgment as Gresham College do with this lecture Comment from : David Newton |
Yet another pointless discipline! Science and mathematics are international endeavors and have no need of decolonization The only decolonization needed here requires a powerful laxative Comment from : Tullius Agrippa |
Very important Comment from : Adam Grimsley |
At the same time, true and woke! Comment from : Krunoslav Regvar |
Strange that neither title nor description mentions the speaker's name / bacgkground Comment from : FlockOfHawks |
lol wow!! This is woke trash!!!! Comment from : Patrick3183 |
