Came here to understand an MCAT physics concept Mission accomplished Thank you Destin Comment from : Sam T |
Can you do this with skateboarding Comment from : Jay |
they’re just use to it feel it Comment from : Kristian Dior |
I've done figure and hockey skating, but that thing That speed skating It scares me Comment from : Ethan |
sauerkraut? Comment from : Leifdux |
As a physicist and amateur figure skater you answered exactly what I was asking myself for the last 3 months Comment from : The Upgraded |
Awesome! I am an adult figure skater (started 2 years ago) I was fun to hear about the physics that is involved in the sport Thanks for taking the time About the formula cool, but I will just stick to skating 😂👍🏼 Comment from : Lilian Matheson |
That must have been the geekiest over explained possible break down of a simple hockey stop I've heard in my life brTalking like that, buddy must get all the women dripping and eager to please lol Comment from : Boss President |
Big problem with this video I could only like it once Comment from : Lawrence Taylor |
when hockey players stop they dont calculate anything, they just do it by muslce memory you are way overthinking it Comment from : Kilju |
overthinking Comment from : Kilju |
As a hockey player, I don’t calculate it, for me it’s mostly very good guessing Comment from : Hosea Beale |
as a hockey player i can confirm that i am no physics geniusbronce you get used to it you don't forget if you keep skating brno math / physics calculations required just the memorizing the feeling Comment from : Volt Bolt |
same is true in roller skates but so you're going around the corner, it's easier to plant one of the shoes down as a pivot point for turning and use the other foot to angle outwards in a diagonal to your direction of travel at the same time your whole body is leaning to the left this is in a left hand turn if you're going around the rink you also have the same problem with friction if you're leaning over too far as you're going around that particular curve your feet will actually slide out from under you mostly to the inside if you're making a left turn most likely reason that you slip is not because of your balance because there's something on the surface it changes the coefficient as friction just as you're passing over it water oils etc you mostly get affected on corners because that's where your body is trying to go straight ahead because of momentum but you're trying to force it to go left via your right foot and the traction on it You're right foot is also typically way extended to help you put more force downwards to keep you from going forward and instead curving to the way you want to go Comment from : Wyld1one |
bro is overcomplicating a hockey stop when i do it all i do is stop idk what i do Comment from : kostammg |
Stopping in a certain spot is NOT complicated You just angle the blade accordingly Comment from : No Here Kruger |
This is the most physics I’ve done since 2006 😆💗 Comment from : Beallymeister |

figure skaters at public skating are the people the hockey players hate Comment from : Visionz412 |
The blade usually don't melt the ice It's an old Myth that it do Scientific resultsts is that the cemical Bonds between the water molecules in the chrystal weakens with higher pressure Thus lessen the friction All surfaces is more or less rugh, which hook in to each other Comment from : Arne Lidmark |
Top Comment from : Angela Rusu |
its not hard to stop in hockey love your vids, cool how you make it so complex I've been playing hockey for 7 years and I didnt even know how in depth this is i really dont even think about stopping, you kind of just do it Comment from : M P |
How much G force is applied on a skater going from full speed to a complete stop (40km/h speed to full stop in 10M)?brbrI would love to know brAnyone? Comment from : Tom Pashkov |
1:44 that’s exactly what the coach told you And that’s also how we control motorcycles at very slow (walking) speeds; keep a little pressure on the rear brake It works wonders! Comment from : BitSmythe |
when you grow up in a big hockey city like I did, almost everyone i know who played hockey started skating at around 2 or 3 years old it becomes so natural, that there are little to no conscious thoughts behind the movements, and i can probably say that i skate better than i run Comment from : curtis |
Figure skaters ruining the ice Comment from : Bobby Ravioli |
People play instruments by an algorithm in their brain 🧠 that takes years to program!! I’ve played harmonica for fifty years and my brain tells my tongue/lungs/mouth/lips/jaws what and when to blow a note while also playing a 🎸 AND adjusting the sound system!! Young players ask me how I do this-I tell them you’ll start to get it after about 25 years!!🙄🤦🏻♂️😉 Comment from : Ludicrous |
Aye huntsville!! Comment from : InitialDad |
And this video shows why all toe picks should be permanently banned; it’s ice abuse, leaving hazardous craters in the ice for hockey players 😉 Comment from : TurboT2 |
As an old-time sub this is awesome to come back to Comment from : G CC |

I love how when he's with experts he's able to say "I don't understand" and let them explain furtherbrNo one is an expert in everything and it's fine to not get concepts right off the batbrEven someone as smart as Destin learns new things everyday :)) Comment from : Ms Anonymous |
As a hockey player I just stop i didnt know there was all that into it Comment from : Nsvinci |

I missed this video, because my girlfriend got me into ice skatingbrI had to come back, years later, just to make sure this video wasn't some kind of fever dream Comment from : JpegTheKpeg |
Not that smart with physics but when you learn it becomes muscle memory Comment from : Groovy Mammoth |
Hilarious how the other players cannot resist peppering Ben with pucks Comment from : motomuso |
He shows the science in everyday things and makes it interesting Comment from : Meerkat |
As far as friction melting goes, I’ve always believed that the melting was from pressure We know that water expands as it freezes That makes ice less dense than water Conversely, compressing ice increases its density, which causes the phase transition back to water brbrWater is unique in that in its solid state it becomes less dense, that is why ice goats in water Comment from : Wayne Saban |
Destin, hockey players are definitively not physics geniuses Comment from : Alexander Crump |
I get 3/8 for my goalie skates and 5 for my player Works like a charm Comment from : MKZ3003 |

So how is pressure melting affected by extreme cold? Is there a temp at which ice skates stop sliding? Comment from : Darren Pinnegar |
He is stating in jeans Comment from : Too Many Cooks |
5:30 It's more or less muscle memoryHe's done it a million times in practice and play Comment from : william skrainski |

He not thinking about anything ,they take it for granted ,there only person over thinking Comment from : Maine outdoorsman |
I thought you were going to talk about how it's impossible to skate on ice below a certain temperature (I'm right about that right? it's like -20C or something?) because the pressure from the blade actually melts the ice so we skate on water essentially? Am I wrong? but great video Comment from : v a |
The 2022 Winter Olympics are coming Vids 110, 111, & 112 should be re-released Comment from : Holli Wood |

Can you do another video on the science of ice skates? I fell like you skimmed over alot of the science and could make this a longer video Comment from : Joe Troyner |
Hey! I just discovered your channel and I really liked the concept of this video in particular I'm really into both ice skating and physics and this video immediately caught my attention As an idea for an upcoming cold hard science video, I'd like to recommend sailing I've been sailing since I was a kid and trust me there is a lot science going on backstage Also, just like the types of blades in ice skating, the types of sails and boats themselves are whats making the difference in sailing You should definitely check it out I, and many other sailors, would be very happy if you make a video about it :))))) Comment from : Ece Akdeniz |
With hockey stops its just hard wired in our heads to know how much force or bend we need, we dont think about it it just happens Comment from : Max R |
No disrespect but i love it when southerners talk hockey and ice skate it’s awesome Comment from : Steve |
