Musician here Caravan is by no means a "flex" piece It's actually not that difficult compared to other charts out there Almost every university-level jazz band can play it Even the solo at the end isn't anything remarkable, but it might appear that way to someone who doesn't know any better It's just played up to give the impression that it's something special Comment from : betaomega04 |

I am no musician nor a "audiophile", heck I couldn't even notice or understand more than half of the examples But what blows my mind is the just amazing level of complexity that humans can achieve It's just stunning Comment from : tremeree jphp |
I wish they had used "Manteca" , maybe not as difficult but way more entertaining Comment from : Marcos de Paula |
Haha I thought he meant Caravan by Rush, which truly is a hard song to play on drums Comment from : Albit Capinigro |

That movie sucked on so many levels Comment from : Nelson Montana |
Literally not a soul in existence has suggested that Caravan is "The hardest tune to play on drums"brIt's a movie about obsessive behavior to accomplish your goals Caravan was the culmination of the student's desperation Shut up about the film's accuracy Nobody cares Comment from : undeadman7676 |
Caravan was an amazing song but it's probably really hard to do Comment from : Skelly619 |

9:58 ITS TOOOOO QUIET, I CANT HEAR BAND Comment from : Дмитрий Шульгин |
The sound and the big band arrangements - I agree with you The sound of the bands in Whiplash wassubdued The big bands I listened to (Maynard Ferguson, Buddy Rich, Thad Jones, etc) all sounded way more exciting than those in Whiplash; it's as if they purposely toned down all the instruments except the drums Comment from : Terry Kosowick |
Fantastic dive With the top band the movie emulates, the ficus was on the Strat oicking—shoulda been the fab bass player, imho Comment from : Robert Albiston |

I learned this song in under an hour Not that hard Toxicity by System of a Down was much harder for me to learn A song like Bleed by Meshuggah is literally orders of magnitude more difficult than Caravan I had absolutely no trouble learning Caravan Jazz only seems harder than rock until you realize that playing consistent rimshots and kick patterns at a loud dynamic requires muscular endurance and a higher level of precision than the tippity tappity percussing that goes on in jazz Miced drums call for more precision in your playing, overall It's also much more difficult to play the pre-defined patterns of rock and pop for an entire song than it is to randomly play snare and bass comping patters underneath a loosely defined ostinato I find that Jazz is a lot more forgiving when it comes to not only the types of beats and fills you can play, but when you play those beats and fills within the music You can really throw fills in anywhere during a jazz tune Try that with a rock tune and you will see how much an extra bass drum note matters in Rock compared to JazzbrbrIt seriously took me 5 times as long to learn the main groove to Duality by Slipknot I don't even know any fills yet, and it's been over a week Caravan, I had down in 45 minutes Comment from : Mike Boon |
i would og never found your channel without this shitfest, fuck you Comment from : Flint Flyer |
dude I love your content! Love the references to tunes that I've never heard of, so here comes the new inspiration Thank you! Comment from : Arturs Reirs |
I saw too many personal opinion, some movie analyse which not all was right, like ignore that the music was played by one of the top drummers in LA and said it was from "high school band", or think that movie was trying to be accurate and totally real like Hum Rocky Balboa movies? Yeah, there's no such thing in movies But you are far away to show real technical reason to Caravan be or not to be the hardest tune to play Very disappointed to watch such long video just to know yours reason, which could be done in few seconds, after that I do think Caravan is one of the hardest tune to play on drums, simple because after all you experience and knowledge, you couldn't even notice that Caravan is not only jazz, but also a mix with samba, making a polyrhythms music as hard as the others you mention, but Caravan you didn't notice, which make me think that you just made a video of something you though that you understand, but you don t, which just show how complex Caravan is I would like to see a video of you playing that entire music, because I'm almost sure that some grooves that looks easy you will fail and think "it's right", and play that long song into the properly speed, that's so hard to do it that even in Youtube you can't find many videos doing that right til the end Comment from : Rodrigo Valentim |
If you cut out all the excessive drums solos, i actually really like the caravan arrangement from the movie I love the original but that new version sounds really good too if you dont just try to use it to show off your drummer Comment from : Dr Breitling |
I love jazz, but if you want a good example of a drummer that has fun while playing odd times and keeps it flowing, watch Mike Portnoy play The Dance of Eternity, or umm, just about anything by Marco Minnemann Comment from : John Belfiglio |
2:17 Man the playing sounds good enough, but where the big smile or the "oh my goodness my limbs are outta control and it sounds on FIRE" sort of face??? Gotta work on that That's quite a big part of the show too Changuito got that shit down You hear him playing, it sounds great You see him playing and that is an entertaining mind blow brbrBut I get ya' the basic songo is quite challenging on its own to get it right and don't even talk about playing around it without missing a beat Gotta focus to nail it right Comment from : mejsjalv |
Change my mind: Tigran is prog metal with jazz instruments Comment from : Bobby James |
“Is it ok for a tune to aspire to difficulty for its own sake?”brbrBlack Page #1 has entered the room Comment from : AltGrendel |

Funny thing is that jazzers like you can't even play basic double bass songs like Bat Country by Avenged Sevenfold, but you want to pretend that jazz songs are harder than rock Comment from : Mike Boon |
Try smiling next time Comment from : Howard Manley |
I loved that movie and that song Comment from : Howard Manley |
Take any Animals As Leaders song and its drumming will be a million times tougher than this Comment from : Jack Lennon |
1:52 bStarts playing/b brFletcher: NOT MY F*CKING TEMPO!!! Comment from : Tommy Pham |
I seriously do not understand why jazz drummers rag on Whiplash so much We know it's not realistic It's a movie It was entertaining People who do the whole "ACTUALLY" thing are insufferable They are almost always using their supposed objections as a thinly-veiled effort to brag about themselves and how much they know (which, in my experience, happens way more frequently with people who aren't actually that great at whatever it is they are trying to make you think they're great at) brbrThe movie might present a funhouse version of jazz band, but it probably got a bunch of little kids to pick up drumsticks That's a good thing Comment from : Kevin Connor |
The human brain the listener? Left beeeeeeehind Comment from : Alla Greta |
How is this guy supposedly a drum teacher Dude has no feel and amateur attack, iffy grooves at best and clearly can't do samba style lol Drum guru here apparently neal Peart 2 over here eh lol Comment from : averageguysgadgetguy |
Black Page Comment from : Bo Hensley |
I had a fun time playing a 2 hour set with a duo and all I had to go on was 2songs on YouTube and a 15 minute brtalk at soundcheckbrTwo dudes sang an hour each of original songs and played acoustic, one of them played uileann pipes, kinda like Scottish bagpipes and he played/composed movie soundtrack for Master and Commander Cool, he told me one tune was in 6/8 and could I play it, I did but I had a different feel, anyway it was seat of the pants stuff, but your are right, the Flow State is Crucial, play loose, relax and Listen! Comment from : John Collins |
In short-- no Comment from : B |

this particular arrangement of caravan is pretty solid, not that hard mind, the typical jazz standard arrangements of this are piss easy The title track of the film, Whiplash, is WAYYY harder tho Comment from : Spike Arrowsmith |
Just an FYI, the jazz snob portion of the lesson started when you said "drum movie" while making hand quotations Comment from : Robert Manoogian |

What about say "The black page" or "Mo n Herb's vacation" by Frank Zappa? Comment from : Conor Kelly |
I really don't like this guy for some reason Comment from : BAT BOY |
The Black Page sure seems to be "flex" to lil ol self-taught me! :) No, never tried, of course! :) brbrVery sane views of art, difficulty, and all the rest If there's no joy, whether hard or easy, what's the point? There is always a need for effort, joyful if possible, but some slog is required in anything worthwhile But it can't be all slog brbrAnd as a teacher, there is literally never an excuse for abusing your students Never Even if it "works" it's not necessary It's just hazing and bullshit--like parents abusing kids because they were abused and saying, "I did it because I love you" Bullshit Comment from : Doug Tarnopol |
Hardest drum songs ever? Anything by meshuggah Comment from : Boh | Geralt of Rivia |
I appreciate the musicianship of jazz musicians, but I much personally prefer Joe Satriani's "Ice Nine" Comment from : caramanico1 |
Wow, rather gifted douche gives us his opinion about nothing we care about Comment from : Paddy le Blanc |
I donno music I watched to understand a bit I got nothing lol Comment from : ALEyZEEO- Aleyzee |
In my opinion, it wasn’t the difficulty of the song that was important to the film, but rather the environment it was being played in He could have been playing something as easy as the white stripes, seven nation army, and it still wouldnt matter, because the principle of the film was to expose the consequences of a conductor like this Correct me if im wring, but thats just my take Comment from : Finn T |
Came here for the Caravan, stayed here for all the contemporary jazz reference that is desperately needed Comment from : Aryo Wisnuwardhana |
Man shut up! Caravan is amazing and very enjoyable, Ice nine sounds horrible lmao Comment from : ShageRG |
Definition of a good drummer: Starts the gig on time and is reasonably sober Comment from : John Fike |
No song is the "hardest to play" It all depends on your skill level and if you can read and understand music I took a look at the (secret) movie you're referring to and that's really not such a difficult drum part I've seen much more difficult Some of the most difficult involve actually doing several totally separate rhythms at once Sober by Tool is a great example Comment from : Dan Roberts |
Blink if you're not a lamp Comment from : You Deserve To Be Loved |
Google Assistant sent me here when I asked for a fun fact Comment from : Nicole Eaves |
Something about this guy makes me hate him but everything about him makes me like him Maybe it's the color of his walls Comment from : cry |
Always great content Im a bass player that used to play the drums as a kid A part of me wanna go back in to drumming But I am not sure where to start Any way enjoy your videos Keep em comming Comment from : Kevin Madsen |
why are you using the quote " " evey 5 seconed , and it was a great movie and has a great music , no one appointed you to judge it and " " quote that its a drum movie , instead try not to be a dick it should be easy Comment from : Monty Baaity |
The hardest thing to do on drums is sounding like Earl Palmer simply playing time Comment from : terrulian |
I'm currently learning the drum part note for note, while the figures and set ups are not difficult as they are quite generic and straight forward They are played at a fast tempo 280bpm There's a lot to cram in I just wish the horn solos were longer and the drums a bit less flex and more dynamic, but of course that was for the great movie Wasn't about realism in jazz There's film was about the relationship between oppression and creativity The ending of caravan was the ultimate fuck you to the oppressive teacher and by breaking all of his rules he emerged a great confident player Albeit with bleeding hands This is Hollywood it was a damn fine film and I love the arrangements Comment from : Fantastic Beats and where to find them |
You know your shit! Comment from : M Pitcher |
Has anybody mentioned Art Blakey's version of Caravan? This is how real a drummer plays Comment from : ronnie long |
For Ice 9 part Is really Myung at the bass and John Petrucci from Dream Theater who's playing?brThing i'm right, juste confirm yf you think the same pls!^^ Comment from : F&D Drummer |
I don't even think it's the hardest song in Rush's catalogbrbrOh Wait Comment from : B |
Just a quick note, it's not a tune when you play drums it's a groove or a beat Comment from : Albert Cole |
It would stand to reason that the music in the movie was deliberately chosen to have wider appeal So the choice and arrangement of Caravan was more about allowing the film/story take the lead Otherwise people might think it's just a film about jazz, or drumming Comment from : freshpootube |
"God I love Mambos" has to be one of your funniest, animatronic moments I've seen yet Comment from : freshpootube |
No Bleed by Meshuggah is Comment from : fifthfloorwanker |
There's only one piece I feel you forgot:brCaravan is usually much slower! The only time I've ever heard Caravan bthat/b quickly was in the movie! That was pretty much what told me that they got the song because they wanted a jazz staple in a jazz movie brIt sounds cool being played that fast, though Comment from : elfbeee |
I have to say that I have never seen anyone look more dead playing any instrument than you It is weird to watch and funny at the same time Keep up the dead work! Comment from : Jon LaRoche |
I was taught the bass figure in a parking lot, before my very first paid gig, long before I studied jazz Granted, under the circumstances the horn players I was working with, all a good 15 years beyond me in education and experience, created a very abridged "Acid Jazz", it was the 90s, version for a cocktail crowd But we hit the changes, and I Barely knew what a pentatonic scale was at the time, other than it meant five, and blues guys played it LOL so yeah, I called bullshit Comment from : Joshua Boden |
someone did it in a little toy drum Comment from : elgritton |
Not my tempo Comment from : Cristian Rodriguez |
