Apparently I've been doing it wrong all these years I believe in the division of duties My left hand is used for anything that requires a fork or spoon Everything is eaten left handed all the time, whether a knife is involved or not My right hand is used for anything that requires a knife I do hold the fork and knife as shown during the European demonstration, but after cutting something I rotate the fork 180 degrees and use it as it was intended to be used And I don't use the knife to put food on my fork except near the end of a meal when I'm corralling the last few morsels Using a knife to push food on an upside down fork makes no sense at all You don't use a spoon or knife upside down, so why would you use a fork upside down? When I'm eating I'm not out to impress culinary snobs with ridiculous and impractical ways of holding my fork and knife just because it's considered proper

It isn't "classy manners" it is just good etiquette In the UK you are taught from a very, very young age how to use a knife and fork It is also not efficient to swap your knife and fork around to eat

In Canada with our French and British cultures mixed together we retained the etiquette from Old World so it's normal to use either way In my region of Canada the old European way ie the zig zag / cut and switch is common Eating is not a race so I find the non cut and switch a bit boorish as if you're trying to out eat everyone

As an American, I find it difficult to relax when people are eating European style, even in films and TV In the back of my mind I’m thinking, please put those knives down, I’m worried someone is going to get hurt!!! This is not right for EU: The knife is never raised to the mouth, waiving or holding up cutlery is a no-no, and when resting the cutlery should be on the plate not dropping to the table Hope that helps!

I have been to many countries, and scooping something on top of the back of the fork is done mostly by the 'I want to look proper and rich' wannabes 😅 it looks quite barbaric to hold the fork so far down or to place the utensils in the middle of the plate when done The end should always be outside of the plate! One should eat in a relaxed way with elbows down, and scooping rice on top of the fork always makes people to stick their elbows out 🙈
