Funny you should mention to ask your "mom" what she wants in terms of a burial I tried so hard to find out and my mom REFUSED to talk about it and would just say "do whatever you want" She was so afraid of dying and wouldn't even give an idea She also had less than half of the expense saved for it, so we went into the sale of her belongings to fund it Very sad, so now I have made known what I want and have begun putting funds aside In the near future, I plan on doing a prepaid cremation

As my hubby is in the final life insurance business…another tipyou can get a casket at sams, Costco or other online retailers for thousands less than the funeral home And often, they are the same exact ones Ordering online, they will deliver it directly to the funeral homebrbrAnother thing to be cognizant of… if you purchase a pre planned funeral from a funeral home, keep in mind they could go out of business and you’d have no recourse Small, whole life final expense insurance could be a good option

15 years ago, one of my best friends died unexpectedly My friend’s husband had a bill of $23k! That’s a lot! And they already owned the plot! About a week later, the husband’s grandmother passed Another $18k and they buried one on top of the other! There wasn’t anything that I saw that warranted any of these costs! It made me Ill, thinking about $40k being sunk into the ground! It also made me disgusted with the funeral home! The poor guy was trying his best to figure his way through massive grief and I felt like they took huge advantage of him!

My Mom prearranged her direct cremation with a local memorial society I arranged for services at the church we used to attend and they charged less than $200 for the whole service with music and refreshments afterwards She is interred in the church's columbarium and I believe the fee was $200 for that So, the total bill was less than $1200 and she had a very nice and dignified memorial service in an amazing old church with stained glass windows

My childhood best friend’s dad worked at our local funeral home So when my brother died, he helped us out He explained that the cheapest coffin in the showroom, which no one ever orders because it’s a putrid shade of green, can also come in silver for the same price and it looks great

I really like this one Unlike many videos, where I feel intrigued but otherwise unconnected to the content, this one makes sensebrbr1 ) Call around for your best pricebr2) Know what you wantbr3) Consider the homebrbrThese are great tipsbrbrWhen my mother died of cancer, she had a hospital bed in one of the bedrooms of our house for her last weekbrWhen she died, I don't remember who we called, but doctors were sent to "call time of death"brbrThe synagogue we have membership with has its own cemetery, and a paid membership comes with a plot (The community can pitch in, even if you aren't part of the synagogue, to purchase the plot) brbrWe used the synagogue's Burial Society to clean the body in the funeral home, which is more of a place to buy the rectangular coffin (they service the whole community, and make clunky caskets available, but have available simple pine rectangular coffins, lined with linen) While the coffin CAN open for viewing, it's not one of those things Jews usually do There are many local headstone dealerships to provide the headstone, but the funeral home can get a better deal to get what you want, and the funeral home provides the hearse to take the body to sit outside the synagogue (where the eulogy/ pre-burial part of the funeral takes place), to just outside the cemetery The pallbearers (family, congregants, etc) take it from there to the plotbrbrI don't know who runs the backhoe to dig the grave, but the mourners and graveside funeral attendees fill the grave (And if the mourners don't fill it, the cemetery has the backhoe to finish the job)brbrA lot of the mess is cut out when you know what you want, and who to get it from with the greatest ease and least price

My mum had a bad case of grief brain after my dad died of illness I was able to help with the funerary decisions, but she impulse bought a freaking tow-behind camper, brand new, so the money saved on the funeral was spent anyway

I called two different places in my hometown for my dad's funeral, and the prices were largely the same In the end, we went with the standard "Catholic" funeral home where all our family has been handled I saved about $1,700 by buying a casket outside and having it shipped in and going for a basic vault We overpaid $100 on flowers and the registry, but didn't care I didn't haggle after that We just had to get it done The funeral was just over $10K and we were done with it We saved enough by coordinating the casket and vault while the price was still insane, we got it donebrbrI'm going for cremation myself

A local funeral home had no price list Their prices & fees were based on the fanciness of the vehicle the family arrived in It got investigated by the state board and is now out of business

That us why my spouse & I already paid for our eventuality We picked a reasonable funeral home, we told them what our wishes were, we haggled and picked what we wanted Both of us are vets, and my husband already built our boxes (stored in our home), based on the specs he was told by the VA cemetary (I actually would prefer burial in my pasture)brNo viewing, no embalming, money set aside in case of out-of-state passing (embalming & air fare), under $6000 for both of us Less for 2 of us to be interred than for my sister-in-law to be cremated with no viewingbrbrKids & grandkids can have a memorial afterwards if they wish, go out for a meal, or have a party if they like But we didn't want to burden anyone with what we see as our responsibility

🎉I know everyone expects some like soft spoken thing about how to save money but lemme say, when I die it is going to be a party with cheap colorful flowers, a painting wall to mix my ashes in the paint and everyone gets to bring their own food And maybe with my access wealth a few strippers and finding someone to take care of my dozens of lizards- Make it cheap but also the biggest party anyone has ever seen, and everyone is invited Cut the strippers if I'm poor though I am buying them myself- I know it has like no relevance but I am tired and decided to rant-😋

My parents paid for everything before my mother died My mother planned her memorial service, who would sing, who was going to speak, etc a few days before she passed away from cancer she was working on her obituary Yes she was organized except that she decided to donate her body to science about a week before she died We were able to make that happen Her planning saved us all a lot of stress when she did pass away

I would also add, pre-paying and pre-buying for the things you can get now When my parents went to buy their grave plots they asked if we wanted to buy a family plot Not all of my siblings wanted to, but those of us who did chipped in and we purchased enough for all of us That was 15 years ago When my mom passed away a few years ago, that was one less purchase we had to make and it saved us $100 by purchasing when it was cheaper Think you might move and change your mind? As long as no marker has been placed/no one has been buried there, you are free to sell it back

I work at a funeral home, and I HIGHLY suggest get a plan before you die I did and I'm under 50 It allows you to take control of how you want your funeral, if you even do They have payment plans - and let's face it, what do you do if you don't have the basic cost to move the body and cremation It's very hard and due to inflation everywhere - cost are going up I suggest you really think about discussing it with your parents, grandparents and yourself It's very liberating when I realized I'm going to go the way I want and it won't be a financial burden to anyone

I knew what I wanted for my mother before she died I went online and searched for different gages of caskets The higher the gage, the thinner the metal I went with the standard 18 gage and I knew what I wanted for her (flowers and such) Ended up paying 13K for her funeral and that I believe, included her luncheon I thought that was a reasonable amount Got the same casket for my dad, and had the same set up for him because he liked what I did for my mother His funeral expense ran about the same amount, but the casket three years later was about $80000 more He wanted the same that I had for my mom so that's what I did Both funerals were most dignified and I was complemented on how well I handled the funerals by family For what you pay for a casket that's only seen maybe two days, shoot- go cheaper if you have to The cemetery had the package deal, open the grave, grave vault, close the grave, headstone and perpetual care At that time $2,30000 Heck I was in a grave buying mood so I bought my plot I'll be next to my mom and dad

Also if you are not cremated and plan on a coffin burial - you do not have to be embalmed The funeral home will push you to embalm - the guy actually pinched his nose and said phew! Well we stood firm and said if dad smelled we would just keep the lid closed Guess what - he didn't smell and he didn't look bad either Also embalming only last for a few months so you aren't really preserving the corpse

In Canada, you can purchase a casket/coffin online from Costco and have it delivered to the funeral home By law, they have to accept it for $0 in British Columbia and some other provinces in Canada You do not have to buy it from the funeral home at two to three times the cost
