Pat OBrien
Great test! Thank you
Comment from : Pat OBrien

zheckav
As the scope magnification kept decreasing, the groups grew tighter! How's this even possible? Amaising And a great topic to explore also

I think this test is a bit misleading because you set up at 30x and didn't totally reset as you went down in magnification Basically the lower magnifications had the extra benefit of an accurate setup at 30x and your excellent body mechanics coupled with top notch equipment gave them the same tight groupings within the target circle as opposed to a tight grouping outside it It would be a more realistic application if after shooting at 30x you removed rifle and bag off the table and reset using the lower magnification that you intend to shoot at And at each magnification you would remove the equipment off the table and reset at that specific magnification That would mimic a person having a scope that had a lower magnification more I know that you were going for just good grouping (precision) in this test but I think that just tests the first half of getting to accuracy, whereas people choosing whether or not to go to a higher power scope are probably basing their decision on wanting to get more accuracy as well as precision Like you noted toward the end of your video, in real world application where actually hitting the target accurately matters, being able to clearly see the target when you bring your gun up to target is crucial In this test the lower magnifications benefiting from an pre-accurate setup made the precision shooting look even more impressive by being accurate as well Never the less it's a very enjoyable video to watch and your skill is out of this world

PeteoBurrito
I assume that’s probably a first focal plane scope and I think that helps a lot because the reticle stays the same relative size no matter what magnification you’re on If the target gets smaller and the reticle stays the same size it covers up more of your point of aim That feature of 2nd focal plane scopes probably doesn’t help Anyway great video

One thing I have discovered is a HUGE important factor for over 50 eyesight is reticle choicebrI have multiple scopes I use for 22lr BR competition brOne has a max power of 24x and a 25" center CH dotbrOne has a max power of 40x and a 09" floating dotbrOne has a max power of 36x and a 125" CH dotbrOne has a power of 25x and a 120" floating dotbrI quickly found out for my being near sighted and having 20/30 eyesight any target dot below 0125" gets difficult to see and use well on a ABA or USBR targetsbrSomething for us over 50 shooters with corrected vision must consider prior to buying a BR specific scope

Joost Prins
I have a 8-32x46 and most of the time on 28/32 at 50 m But I got a friend who shooting max 16 and is totally happy, I like big magnification so I think it’s personal
Comment from : Joost Prins

MacIntyre Rose
Wow! That's some pretty good shootinʼ You just proved the old adage: You don't have to be able to see the target You just have to know where it is
Comment from : MacIntyre Rose

Bon Jovi
Ever notice what benchrest shooters shoot? (adult calibers) Their scopes are a MINIMUM of 24 power There's a reason for that And if you cant steady your rifle enough for a higher power optic, throw your beanbags away and buy a proper front rest, and a proper stiff rear bag and it'll change your life, I promise Also, cheek welds are a thing of the past; quit trying to find a way to rest your 10lbs head on the rifle; that's for iron sight rifles It does nothing but make it harder to steady the rifle
Comment from : Bon Jovi

P Latzgo
I’m a competitive smallbore match shooter who shoots prone with a sling On my 22 match rifle I use a Sightron SIII 10-50x I Needed to work very hard to develop a hold where I could effectively use 35x in a match If on match day if my hold is not as good as it needs to be I will go down to 20x Very often seeing less results in better scores brThe other thing that good glass will do is give you the ability to read mirage brbr Another great Video My friend

Eric Dincauze
This proves your mechanics are very freaking good, Kudos Josh!!
Comment from : Eric Dincauze

HD Toby Bradshaw
1000-yard benchrest shooters are getting 01-02 MOA groups at 20 times the 50-yard distance in this video, with nowhere near 20 times the scope magnification (more like 1x-2x the magnification) A 60x benchrest scope at 1000 yards has the same resolution as a 3x scope at 50 yards The human eye is very good at picking out the center of a target, as Josh demonstrated
Comment from : HD Toby Bradshaw

AF-O6
I truly enjoy this channel Sadly, even though I subscribed some time ago, I have to actively seek out your videos, as they don’t show up on my YT subscription feed
Comment from : AF-O6

Clement Kim
Hmm Was there any mirage at 20x and 30x?

Charles DeMay
Very interesting video I did something kinda like what you did, well at least seeing what HIGH MAGNIFICATION can do for shooting small things at what is NOT USUALLY considered possible with a 22lr RIFLE I had a CZ 452 2E STYLE with a inexpensive high-powered scope 6-24X40 from Walmart, I think it might have been a Center-Point I was shooting 12ga Shotgun shells at 100yds, needed 24 power to see what I was shooting at in order to hit it which I did once I figured out the drop at 100yds 😁🤗👍

Kevin Schallau
Josh - Answer this if you can - or private message me - Tract or Apex - Will I justify spending the extra $300 for the Apex ??
Comment from : Kevin Schallau

Bruce Spurgeon
There was a test like this in the 1960's that showed the same results

I came up with a very brilliant idea just a minute ago It involves your comparison of the Lilja barrel and the MTR CZ barrel Since you compared those barrels I have found out there are lots of precision barrel makers out there So compare them all to show how good you are and how unbiased you are I trust your efforts more than most and use of other peoples barrels to accomplish this comparison>

Glad to see you're back home

Charlie Siempelkamp
I really liked this video, I was hoping that you would finish up shooting 2 more groups at 30x I'm curious if your concentration level went up shooting at lower magnification Aim small, miss smallbrAnd how does your bag rider compare with the MDT bag rider? I just got a 457 built by Kenny at DPG, and I bought an MDT bag rider on a Black Friday deal Figures Now I see another one after I bought one! Oh well, I don't facebook anyway I can't believe how many in the shooting community still do

Matthew McAllister
I think high magnification is more important when shooting for score on benchrest targets than shooting for group
Comment from : Matthew McAllister

Ron Martinsen
I wish you would’ve shown the MOA for your groups
Comment from : Ron Martinsen

Ron Martinsen
There’s been 3 times where I put my 3 or more shot group in the exact same spot at 200 yards with my 65 Creedmoor and all 3 times I was at 10x in adverse conditions and couldn’t see Jack brbrThat said I still struggle to get off 20x because I feel so much more comfortable at that magnification
Comment from : Ron Martinsen

Austin Crowe
Holy crap Josh is back home
Comment from : Austin Crowe

Richard Mattix
It looks like the shooting is a testament to your abilities I f you had to get up and move around it would make a difference because your point of aim would change as you moved around
Comment from : Richard Mattix

Herb K
Interesting video Personally I'm a magnification whore I shoot 50 and 100 yd benchrest matches with a 60 power scope At 50 yards that ARA bullseye pretty much fills the screen Like they say, aim small, miss small Also yes the very high magnification can show body movement, which tells you to get off your gun For benchrest try to touch the gun as little as possible, you don't pull it into your shoulder like you might for PRS But to each their own There's one guy at our matches who shoots an antique rifle and scope, I think the scope power is around 4x, and he does very well Knowing your equipment is the main thing
Comment from : Herb K

Kevin Williams
I'm surprised by that result as well Good shooting on your part to keep those groups tight at 45x magnification
Comment from : Kevin Williams

donnie powell
There’s a reason benchrest shooters use high magnification My squirrel rifles I use 2x7 Really like your videos

Joe D
It is all about the reticle My group testing scopes are all second focal plane One has a tiny dot in the center while the other has a small fine + One is 27x max with the other one 40x max
Comment from : Joe D

M M
Hey Josh, Appreciate your videos This is almost the best case scenario for low magnification performance Given the point of aim is the center of concentric circles Nowa test where point of impact matters and you're doing a small hold off(say between the center dot and outside of 10 ring) for conditions would be a better illustration in my mind I know you're not claiming any differently but I feel like this is illustrating only a very limited scenario
Comment from : M M

Richard Fisher
Just admit it,your Just a damn good shot Josh !

Kent Davis
Interesting My old eyes need about 16+
Comment from : Kent Davis

EL Robbins
People always go for the big magnification 18x is plenty for me Please explain 8x , 6x zoom in scopes?
Comment from : EL Robbins

M Strait
Josh, thank you for the work you did in this video Quick question - do you think that barrel fouling and increased barrel warmth may have contributed to the tight groups even as magnification was reduced?
Comment from : M Strait

John Florido
That's great shooting Man!

Last year I bought a Burris xtr II I was really disappointed with it I sent it back to Burris they said it passed all the tests At fifty it just wouldn't focus it would clear up around 70 yards or slightly less It doesn't sound like a big problem but if that's the range you want to shoot it is I have taken it out further and it performs fine the dials are great on it but the focus not so much so at fifty I have to keep it around 12x The parallax on it starts at fifty that might be contributing to the problem I immediately bought a Vortex Strike Eagle it's in about the same price range it has better clarity than the Burris and I normally set it at 14x for 50 anything further I crank it up depending on the heat waves I might back it down It's interesting too I have an old Vortex Viper sfp that has better clarity than either one of these scopes all the way up to max magnification and a simple holdover reticle I think sometimes the christmas tree reticles are just too busy The 4x groups were a surprise the reticle is tiny at that power

Comment from : Joshua Gibson

Fred Goodrum
I am not sure if this evaluation says more about the shooter than scope
Comment from : Fred Goodrum

Archer Paintball
There is a point of diminishing returns with magnification The most important part of an accurate shot is the activation of the shot You need enough to see clearly, but not too much that exaggerates your movement to the point your brain start the 'yes-no' dialog in your head A clearer picture either by less magnification or better glass is important Dot is better than crosshairs to help prevent peeking in my experience Along with not commanding the shot
Comment from : Archer Paintball

Steve Kiemele
I shoot benchrest for score I shoot a 50X scope I like 50X a lot better than 40X I consider 30 power minimum Shooting groups is a lot easier since you never hold off as you do for score My hold offs are sometimes like a 1/32” I shoot 2nd focal plane so that the reticle doesn’t obscure the entire 10 ring brbrI agree that 10 might be useful for groups or for hit-or-miss steel targets
