I had a IEP meeting when I was in school and my senior year of high school was 2016 in my teacher told me that I shouldn’t go to college and my best option should be is to go to work and I told her OK but I went anyways, was it hard yes it was I end up dropping out of college for the first year I had became pregnant with my son and everything and I decided to go back to college and I got my medical billing in coding degree anything is possible and my son is five year old and he has autism and he is also in kindergarten and I’m working so hard to get him to talk and I’m also staying on top of everything when it come to my son education and I also have two daughters as well in when I get my son to communicate with me and everything I’m letting my kids choose whether or not they want to stay in school or do they want to homeschool and stay at home? I think that is very important to kids in general because I do not want my kids to experience what I had experience in school I think a lot of parents should ask them self do they want their kids to be taught by somebody that not going to make them better in life we as parents have that authority to teach our kids the right way Comment from : Precious Woods |

Some valid points but special ed is an important solution for some students It often does not work as it should on paper and part of the reason for this is that we as a country do not respect people with disabilities I was briefly placed in special ed as child because I did not speak English and I was generally "very foreign" in how I expressed myself (speaking too softly, avoiding eye direct contact with teacher, etc which is associated with how a student should behave in my native country as a way to show respect) but I was taken out quickly because I did quite well in academically despite my language barrier What many people fail to see is that special ed is a spectrum, and there are high performing students of high intellect in special ed classes as well Also, not all kids with an IEP have "learning disabilities" (that is only 1 of 13 IDEA categories although it is the most common one) Most people assume that "learning disability" means low IQ but by definition kids under "LD" category have normal IQs that cannot explain their low performance in school General ed teachers usually do not get trained on disabilities issues and are often unaware of how disability manifests especially when the student is not visibly disabled, and principals are barely trained on special ed needs For instance, when I taught self-contained students, I was told by a principal that I should be "reading kindergarten books to students since they functioned on a very low reading level" That is incorrect and actually insulting to kids I just modified higher level content to meet their lower reading level needs (constantly had to do this because even books geared toward special are often not properly modified to balance out the academic & functional needs) but regardless of functional reading ability these 13 and 14 yr students fully understood that they were not kindergarteners and they were able to make connections to higher level content even if they could not easily sound out every single multisyllabic word Special Ed is far more complex than you have presented here, although you certainly make some very important points about that parts of special ed that do no work Yet some things do work Special ed does not exist in a vacuum As a society we look down on people with disabilities and that needs to change We assume that having a disability equals being incapable of learning and that is absolutely false There is too much stigma associated with being classified as having a disability and there is little understanding and training of education professionals at all levels The reason laws (504, IDEA, etc) were developed is because students with disabilities were routinely denied public education (the mother of the disability rights movement was denied a public education because she used a wheelchair, she had no intellectual issues but was treated like she cannot learn even though she was actually advanced intellectually) Special Ed is not the problem, the failures you speak of are a symptom of the problem of bias against certain students by our educational system and our culture in this country While some groups (young black boys for instance) are certainly over-represented in special ed and no doubt systemic racism plays a role in that over-representation, there are still many students who need the services that being classified as special ed allows them to get (OT, PT, etc) and they do benefit from and sometime even prefer to be in a special ed class with a strong special ed teacher who is patient and highly skilled in special ed modifications and content delivery There are many who teach far beyond the lowered expectations you mention here and there are many students who benefit from the smaller classes, more individualized attention, specialized services, etc Special Ed is not the enemy, it is a victim that desperately needs help I taught special ed for many years in every permutation in which it exists, and I can affirm that kids in my classes learned real content, often far above what was expected for them because it is possible to teach content that is higher level even when the student struggles with dyslexia or another disorder (you have to be strong at content and strong at modification techniques to achieve this) I don't infantilize students because they have a disability but due to a lack of proper training, there are teachers and principals who certainly do Special ed is difficult for many reasons for students as well as for teachers and the level of change we need is far beyond the scope of this rant Please don't throw the baby out with the bath water Comment from : ShpresaAhmeti CUNYTC |

As someone who had an iep from 2nd grade till junior year I can definitely say being pulled out of my classes held me back so much i missed out on a lot that my peers were allowed to stay in class and learn Having an iep made me hate school from having more work than the non special education students to the bullying when other students found out I had one An iep is just another way to get mentally scared from school Comment from : Exotic Earth Child |
|
For most sped teachers, by far, the worst cases are blk males From behavior to inactive parents They are the worst to deal with The most disruptive Most need better parents instead of an IEP The majority can't read, not bc of disability, but bc they don't care about school and their "parents" enable their bad behavior Things would turn around if more professional blk men could take just an active role mentoring as blk wmn do, but I just don't see that happening Comment from : Caramel Spice |

Both of my children had IEPs for ADHD Neither of my children misbehaved at school, but they had learning challenges and struggled with maintaining focus Prior to my son’s diagnosis, his teachers told me he never raised his hand in class, he never volunteered, his fine motor skills were very weak, and he was often distracting himself by looking out of the window during instruction, which caused him to lose large chunks of information My daughter had similar issues and had difficulty completing tasks due to moderate-to-severe perfectionism Neither of my children took ADHD medication because their RSP specialists and I worked diligently with them on learning how to manage their ADHD; my children worked their asses off Thanks to the academic intervention they received as well as the collaboration between the RSP specialists, my children, and me, both of my children are thriving My son is currently a junior at a major university as a student-athlete on a D1 scholarship, and my daughter just graduated high school with honors and will be attending college this Fall as a student-athlete-musician The academic intervention that my children received, as the result of having IEPs, worked for them So…although I do concur with a lot of what Dr Johnson has said, there are a few things I disagree with him on Bottom line, don’t throw the baby out with the bath water when it comes to IEPs There are many students who really do benefit from special ed services Comment from : Stephanie Trapps |

Parents (affluent ones too) fight for an iep for their kids because the accommodations are really helpful Also, an iep team tends to choose between accommodations and modifications If a student has a really challenging learning difference, they’ll likely get a modification which precludes them from a standard diploma Comment from : Matt Gutierrez |

And why do black people always say, “I’m not good at math”? Because, just as you said Dr Johnson, these teachers aren’t teaching them so they’ll understand but to confuse them Everyone isn’t the same size, everyone doesn’t learn the same It has nothing to do with learning able or disable, everyone learns differently It has to do with this system of punishment and reward Comment from : ANNE |

From a person who was in the special education system my entire life this hurt It hit right on the nail all the points I suffered from bullying, doubting myself my entire life I fought out of special Ed just to be in a normal class I would ask why am I different what is wrong with me -why am I less? I’m 29 years old I passed with a regular diploma no special education classes at all Anything is possible if you believe Push yourself You can get out and be what you want to be Comment from : Israel Gomez |

I Had a IEP I was in special education from 1 grade thru 12 grade my hold education I was never told my learning challenge I was just told what I can't do I beat the odds I even went to college and got my degree I still struggle in college but it did not stop me After graduating my mother Is finally told me my disability Some of the things these is talking about I totally disagree with him Comment from : Shawn Norman |

No educator I’ve ever encountered over a decade in sped would put a kid in sped unless it would benefit the children No one is looking at sped money in this context Comment from : Cats O |
|
There may some some truth to this video but the money aspect is not true for our school district at all Yes, districts receive some funding for special education, but it no way comes to the cost of providing the various services required for students with IEPs If a student need speech therapy, it has nothing to do with whether they are trying hard or not The same thing applies to a student who has dyslexia A student who has dyslexia doesn't need to try harder They need intensive, expensive systematic instruction We also have 18-21 year old students who we need to serve as well and it costs a ton of money to pay for their services The district has to fund most of this ourselves Having more special education students creates most financial burdens for the district We do not profit from students with IEPs Anyone who knows anything, knows that getting speech, physical, occupational therapy is expensive There is no way around that Paying for instruction with 1 to 1 or small groups is expensive It's just common sense Comment from : Sam Chiang |
|
I have mixed feelings about this Before my childs TBI she was a honor roll student in Talented and Gifted Without my child's IEP she wouldn't have had the additional necessities she needed after her TBI Now Im not saying what he is saying isnt happening in some situations But for children that actually have a medical or a learning disability the IEP helps Comment from : MOMMom of Many |

I'm a parent of an IEP child and I'm very uneducated on this topic, so l agree with him Comment from : Gisselle Torres-De La Rosa |
|
As a parent of a child with special needs, a special education teacher, and an advocate this is not wholly accurate and misleading We first must emphasize that these are not SpEd kids, but students who are receiving special education services Also teaching a child and informing them about their disability also gives them the tools to advocate for themselves Comment from : Michelle M |

On point! 🙏🏻 System has failed students across the United States for too long! Terribly sad It’s amazing how they can’t teach young students to read and do basic math in 2023 The school system seems to create more gaps and confusion over a long period of time and children end up with what I call Swiss cheese! IEP goals are not be written for students to master, administrators aren’t keeping parents in the know This whole system is a scam for schools to be allotted money for our federal government for Superintendents to be overpaid, teachers underpaid and children of the future uneducated At the same time districts refuse to share collected data etc with parents for meaningful participation Comment from : K Prudhomme |

I disagree with Dr Umar Dyslexia is the most common learning disability, affecting 15-20 of the population It’s highly genetic, meaning one of the parents or other relatives probably has a degree of dyslexia as well There is a ton of shame, stigma, secrecy for individuals and families with dyslexia Proper identification of kids with dyslexia, and the science of reading is what’s needed to help these students learn You can implement the science of reading in the general classroom and decrease the need for kids to have iEPs Early and appropriate intervention is key Helping kids when they’re young can give better outcomes and close the achievement gap Failure to identify and provide evidence based intervention just keeps kids on a rat wheel of failure IEPs aren’t the problem Special Ed isn’t the problem Learning disabilities CAN and SHOULD be remediated using evidenced based multi sensory methods Many teachers and reading specialists don’t receive the proper training to learn how to help kids with dyslexia All stakeholders need to follow the research The research does not support holding kids back People with dyslexia have many gifts, they just need the proper reading instruction to be able to gain their foundational reading skills I think this Dr is doing a disservice to parents The last thing you want is for your kid to not get the help they need and just fly under the radar, not learning and trying to fit in That will only serve the kid or parents in the very short-term For long term success you need good reading instruction and support About half of people with dyslexia also have co-occurring ADHD, so that can impact learning and learning behaviors as well Comment from : Stephanie Reid |
|
I was a SPED teacher for self-contain K-2 so Dr Umar seem to speak a lot on Resource/Remedial/high functioning students VS Self-contain/life skills/lower functioning For the latter SPED class is absolutely a great thing for them to have As for the others, I wouldn’t say all of them would fit under Dr Umar’s description From my experience there are students who need extra help can can be caught up with general ed with that additional SPED help or medication One thing Umar didn’t mention is how these students who aren’t diagnosed first behave in general ed class Because I guarantee you a parent will be up at the school quick if a disable or behavioral child disrupt classroom learning Comment from : DJ Moon Knight |

First of all, special education is a service not a place Secondly, parental consent is required for assessment and for initial services Schools can not automatically determine eligibility or provide services without parental consent Comment from : Mona Adou |

Where is the school, Umar? We need Special Ed classes, fool And, IEP/504 plans benefit children They need special behaviors You need to talk to these fathers Comment from : SAVEYOURWOMBSBLACKWOMEN |

My daughter is mainly behavioral and we finally are getting behavior therapy for her but they don’t offer that in school either It breaks my heart because her behavior gets in the way of her learning but the school doesn’t help her with that part Comment from : Mrs Smith |

We live in AZ and my daughter is autistic and is in spec Ed and has an IEP I Love her teacher but I feel like she’s only babysat and doesn’t learn anything I know the school is getting paid for her big time Comment from : Mrs Smith |

I just so happen to be a school psychologist in Philly He's right about the IEP equaling learning disability But he's wrong to imply that schools qualify students for extra special ed money In fact, it's quite the opposite While it is true that SPED students allot the school more money But on the flip side, SPED kids are a liability Meaning, when they are in special education districts are liable monetarily if the students needs aren't met In Philly in particular, parents sue left and right over the smallest things when it comes to their SPED kids SPED kids receieve more in funding because it takes far more resources to teach them, not from greed For example, a child in a small class with only 5-8 other students has approximately 3-5 adults in the room all the time Compare how much schools pay for 3-5 adults for only 5-8 kids compared to one teacher for 30 in regular ed That's just one example but there are lots more To imply that greed is the reason schools want SPED kids is simply untrue There is no one at the top collecting checks for SPED kids nor are these fund going back into schools It simply costs more to teach SPED kids However, he is on the money about teachers want children out of classrooms for behavior reasons, and there are far more referrals for behavior than reading and math in my experience Please don't let the fact that Dr Umar is a SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST be lost on you He is trained and qualified to place children in SPED So it's ironic that he seems not believe SPED kids are not really SPED kids when his whole training teaches him to identify disabilities And, he is Dr at that He must have believed in it to be in school for that long Comment from : Chelle Nicki |

As a SPED para, BUT they're not VERY VERY intelligent Comment from : Diamone Fowler |
|
There is no single teacher that "puts a kid in special education" There is a thing called Child Find in the law Child Find requires all school districts to identify, locate and evaluate all children with disabilities, regardless of the severity of their disabilities Child find is a team of people (not SPED teachers) that evaluate and collect data to determine the next steps for students I've worked in multiple states and settings as a SPED teacher and there are plenty of students that underperform and aren't labeled as SPED The student must qualify for SPED Also, the IEP does not determine what a SPED student learns The state curriculum does Depending on the state there are different diploma tracks He is wrong on many things here Comment from : Corey Smith |
|
I taught SpEd and had a few of my students go back to regular Ed for the subjects they excelled in and it was a big fight to get them back into those classes Comment from : Dianne Forbes |

I know what this man is saying, I had a son that the school wanted to test for ADHD Come to find out, he was just bored with school He was a very smart young man, asking them to give him extra work or help the teacher They act as if I them out cursed out the principles and social worker He didn't stay at that school long I do have a Autistic son who has an IEP smart as a wip They want to put him in regular class, they want to push him happen on my watch I learned a lot, how states if schools don't have enough kids of color and special education in their school, they will try to try to persuade them by school of choice for sport; football, basketball and track Better school for special education Down here in Georgia is the worst They just want to push the kids throughI had to go in requesting what I wanted, speech therapy, and occupational therapy for my son They didn't care if my son could write his name or number, let alone speak I see the kids coming to school with trakes in their necks and wheel chair Yes, these children should get some form of education but not in an environment where you have teachers changing diapers and cleaning trakes that's not their job I know that my son is worth about $15,000 or more But this is special education down here in Georgia for my son, who has Austism The lousy governor wants to give back covid-19 money Those funds should be used to help education and medical for the people of Georgia I feel as though I have failed my son😣☹️😓 Comment from : Nancy A |

I had special ed 21 gpa after i graduated Come my sensual year I had to retake all the main tests I failed over the years that you need to pass for a high school degree I’ll say without SE i prob would of failed highscool but even with it, i was still constantly failing with pretty much no “extra help” Only benefit I got from it was being able to go to a special study hall type class room pretty much whenever I wanted Comment from : Anonymous |

He is literally lying 🤥 and blk people eat it up and it's so 🤬 sad Majority of the kids in special Education already have a medical diagnosis from their doctors or children's hospital for their learning, emotional, or mental health disability Literally taking advice from a man who booted out of his professional for unethical practices is clownry Comment from : Lynay B |

It’s almost as if nobody can love the child as much as the parent and the parent is actually responsible for the child’s behavior and education Those teachers keep acting like their world doesn’t revolve around other peoples’ kids Weird Comment from : E A |
|
Aaaah I enjoyed this piece but as a Special Education teacher I go hard every day for my students Will try to be brief I have that conversation with them right up front You learn at your own pace, let those around you respect it I may get a concept immediately, sometime today, next week or never That is okay we will keep it pushing It takes the first good month of them knowing that I will not settle with them not doing work Once the confidence is there ohhhh you should see what they do I have had my IEP babies as I love to call them return to school to say hi and thank you and tell me how well they are progressing in Math n ELA Enough off to college, some went on to work I can share so may good stories When in place and it is a team effort and you let that student know that it is not the answer it is a support Lisssten Comment from : Chaka Langevine Casey |
|
He forgets to mention that the parents are also on that progress team It takes parents pushing and pushing to get services for your child As a parent you have the right to refuse to sign that IEP until it has the support you need for your kids You also should attend all the budget meetings to see where they are spending those title 1 funds Comment from : Madiz Texidor |

I am a teacher, and I want all parents to read this, do not put your kids in special ed, do not give them an IEP, and be reluctant about giving them a 504, unless they absolutely need it and you get multiple opinions Kids with an IEP, usually underperform general education kids, not just in school, but throughout their whole life, they give these kids these accommodations, but we must not forget that life is not accommodating! Comment from : Philip Lynch |

This is b/s I've been teaching for seven years, multiple districts The last three as an intervention literacy and numeracy teacher for K-3rd grade students LITERALLY the heart of where this stuff originates The only people who wind up in any SpED classes are those who beyond not responding well to our intervention time, also demonstrate behaviors that merit more intensive instruction outside the general classroom model This notion that schools are just dropping Black and Brown kids in to SpED classrooms is sillyand also a deflection away from a greater truth that folks don't want to recognize: Many of these children come to elementary school much less prepared for not just the learning, but the social element of the classroom environment because they have parents who didn't do that ground work prior to them being enrolled I've gotten in heated discussions with parents who do EVERYTHING but take accountability for their own inaction, only to find them later getting in to trouble either with law enforcement or CPS, which is the ultimate tragedy here READ TO THE SEEDS, as Bobby Digital once said Comment from : Manu Ginobilis Bald Spot |

So true! When my son was in 4th grade, his teacher told all parents to get an IEP for their children so that they can recieve more time on their state test I immediately emailed her and informed her of what an IEP is and that a child has to be diagnosed as having a learning disability My son was extremely gifted and recieved the highest score on all 3 test without a damn IEP she responded, apologizing, claiming that she had no idea what an IEP was The IEP remains on the child's school record!
