|
For Dave Ramsey fans, he has just two reasons to take SS befor 70 One: You need the money Two: You can invest it There you have it Comment from : Steve Williams |
|
Unfortunately, the Fidelity and most other calculators don't take into account the time value of money which is ridiculous That evens the comparison to a large degree Also, the spousal benefit doesn't come into effect unless you are already taking SS before you die In my case, my wife will be receiving a smaller benefit on her own and won't get any benefit from me if I die before starting SS Early payments and the spousal benefit is kind of like an insurance benefit and has some intrinsic value on its own There are many individual factors to consider such as the fact that we won't be employed while receiving benefits Waiting as long as you can is not the best answer for all by far Comment from : ggsipaper |

I have watched many videos about the "right" age to begin collecting Social Security When I look at my SS statement it seems so obvious that the best age is 70 I'm 66, my benefit today would be $3,313 If I wait until I'm 70 it will be $4,342 Am I missing something? Comment from : Ed Rodgers |
|
So the thing that stood out to me was, even 2/3 of the people who make it to 65, won't make it until age 90 Comment from : Jeff B |
|
What a great country! When I turn 70 I can begin collecting an undeserved Federal welfare check In my case, $4328 a month!! Comment from : Ernie |
|
I have a question, once you’ve hit your 40 credits and if you go to part time for awhile or on a sabbatical does that affect what I will receive in future? Comment from : Michele S |
|
Discussions about Federal welfare, SS make me nauseas Why are American seniors so greedy??? Comment from : Juan Garcia |
|
Shouldn't you consider the lost opportunity cost of waiting? For example, if you wait until 70, you have missed out on 8 years of lower monthly payments So you are not "ahead" by making that choice until you recoup the 8 years of payments you chose not to take Comment from : Susan T Springer |
|
I’m on disability I am 65 is it better for me to switch to Social Security or keep on disability Comment from : Mark Walton |
|

Wait until 70 to collect your Federal welfare check Mine will be $4,328 It is all undeserved so why not wait?? Comment from : Ernie |
|
I've had cancer very badly My doctor says I'm high risk and that it will come back, it makes no sense for me to wait until I'm 70 and I'm single, my parents did not make it till age 70, Comment from : chuck |

Take this job and shove it
brI ain't working here no more
brMy woman done left and took all the reason
brI was working for
brYou better not try to stand in my way
brAs I'm a-walkin' out the door
brTake this job and shove it
brI ain't working here no more
brI've been workin' in this factory
brFor now on fifteen years
brAll this time I watched my woman
brDrownin' in a pool of tears
brAnd I've seen a lot of good folk die
brThat had a lot of bills to pay
brI'd give the shirt right offa' my back
brIf I had the guts to say
brTake this job and shove it
brI ain't working here no more
brMy woman done left and took all the reason
brI was workin' for
brYou better not try to stand in my way
brAs I'm a-walkin' out the door
brTake this job and shove it
brI ain't workin' here no more
brWell that foreman, he's a regular dog
brThe line boss, he's a fool
brGot a brand new flattop haircut
brLord, he thinks he's cool
brOne of these days I'm gonna' blow my top
brAnd that sucker, he's gonna' pay
brLord, I can't wait to see their faces
brWhen I get the nerve to say
brTake this job and shove it
brI ain't working here no more
brMy woman done left and took all the reason
brI was workin' for
brYou better not try to stand in my way
brAs I'm a-walkin' out the door
brTake this job and shove it
brI ain't workin' here no more
brTake this job and shove it Comment from : Mike Panklang |

Clark, I'm thinking of taking my SSN at 66 plus 2 months I was born in 55 My purpose for this is, it'll be 2k per month I'm still working and will continue as long as I can pretty much I'm in good health I'll put all of those funds in a Roth and will until I finally quit working I earn on my job right at 42k plus per year Any suggestions or thoughts about my thinking process? If I take it now that's 24k per year and by the time I'm 77 or so there will be over 300k in the Roth I need to work because that ssn will be our retirement Our house is paid for and we have very lil dedt Comment from : Randy Hersey |

Common wisdom says if you are married, the higher earner should wait till 70 while the lower earner can start SS early to maximize family SS benefits Why? Because when one spouse dies you effectively lose the lower SS benefit If higher earner dies first, spouse gets higher survivor benefit Comment from : Lynda Young |
|
Great stuff Thank you Clark & Clark team Comment from : Carlos Padilla |
|
The other factor that can play into when to start SS is Medicare I'm planning to work to my full retirement age of 66 & 2 months and I want to keep putting money into a Health Savings Account at work The instant I sign up for Medicare, I loose the HSA contribution so I will defer Medicare from 65 to 662 If you start SS at 65, you will automatically be signed up for Medicare Part A and you have no choice So because I want to keep working and keep the HSA contributions going, I must NOT sign up for Social Security brbrWhy would I want to start Social Security a year early? I ran the numbers It will take 13 years to break even I'd like to take that year's worth of payments that I don't need to live on and save/invest it or use it to pay off debt or solidify an emergency fund Comment from : Jim Steelman |
