There are many open/free access corpora today, unlike 20-25 years ago And yet, teachers don't apply corpus-based activities in class A pity The middle part of going from expert /research to actual teaching integration somehow fails My opinion is that one big reason is that corpus researchers tend to get stuck in their own individual studies and academia, as linguistics is the expert area in which these teacher researchers dwell And making that step from their world to the layman's world is hard for them Also, anything requiring digital tools and inductive thinking is not as common as traditional teacher-fronted classrooms In fact, even tools as simple as Google seen as a corpus are hard to see being used in class Instead, teachers mostly direct students to use online dictionaries, glossaries, grammars, and so on: traditional approaches even if they are accessed digitally Comment from : Alejandro Curado |
