Defeating an insurgency requires a combination of these tactics, in order to defeat an insurgency, you need to make them lose support among their main support base, you do this by keeping insurgents under immense military pressure for prolonged periods of time, when insurgents are struggling to make any headway they become desperate and use more brutal tactics, against both the occupying army and the local population, as a result, the local population will become more willing to cooperate with counter insurgency forces, if only because they are better than the insurgents

I think that the oil spot strategy is the best one for dealing with hostile insurgents, but the public diplomacy one is the best in being sure that the locals don't join the enemy or give them info about key subjects

Vietnam employed dynamic defend instead of static defend, very long tail and pointy head We also support former Khmer officers who defects to set up and support the population We do not put people in strategic hamlet, aka concentration camps because of our long tail tactics These arms camp are static denfense that vulnerable to attack and costly monetary and potically to maintain Khmer officers and local Khmer provide much needed intelligence against insurgents These Khmer officers are still here today years after our withdrawal from Cambodia Vietnam is one of the best guerilla warrior and also the master against the tactic US army rely too much on technology and not human enough to connect with the locals populace

I'm not a military expert but they simply should have encircled the city and after a Of time The insurgents would have to go out for food or supplies and in addition to that in Fallujah They would eventually run out of food clean water medical supplies going in didn't do anything, but fall into the Trap of the insurgents who were sitting there waiting

You can't make war nice Insurgent tactics are not nice and attempting to quell insurgents via nice tactics will ultimately lead to unacceptable casualties for the invading forces This is precisely what American and Allied forces have experiences in both Iraq and Afganistan, an unacceptable casualty rate As William Tecumseh Sherman said, "War is crude and you cannot refine it" We understood this in WW II There's very little insurgent activity in an area that has been bombed to virtual oblivion

Another issue which cant be easily resolved is turn over of troops General David Petraeus favored public diplomacy which is excellent for combating insurgency however, when such and such Battalion has reached its expiration of time of duty and most rotate out that leave a new rotation of troops to come back and take the place This could make the public of what ever area is being occupied uneasy because it was almost like they were abandoned Granted with time they will warm to the new rotation of troops

Why counterinsurgency hasn't worked in Afghanistan is once that combat Outpost you're at has a firefight amongst the homes that the insurgents are using and a civilian is killed you just turned that whole village against you permanently so I don't believe counterinsurgency works if there is combat in that area why would they want to work with you when you just killed their son or daughter look at it from their point would we work with them we should just be whack and terrorist that's it

when dealing with insurgencies, the 2 things that i feel work best is befriending the local populace and actionable/responsible intel any foreign army in an area that doesn't respect the people will only lead to problems we should be there with the mindset to save everyone, not just are men for intel, a non invasive traker of the papules would be invaluable in tracking down those who are planning to do teror or chowers others to do it for them should be 3 parts detectiv to one part combat
