As of this year, I have 35 yeaars of sobriety following the 12 steps of AA The one fundamental requirement is that the desire for sobriety is as strong as a drowning man's the desire for air Death by alcohol is an ignoble death

Theo, Your comment about feeling "electrocuted" by the feeling of being loved by a "god" or "higher power" I think you described your higher self not a god or power greater than yourself You nailed it It's YOU You are falling in love with yourself which is long overdue You deserve to be loved

Drinking is but a symptom!!!! THE 12 steps and 12 traditions are a design for living! AA Sucess rate is 10 why because AA has been diluted! You got to follow the instructions from the first 164 pages of the big book! & 12 × 12 no other way! They are text books, they need to be studied!
Comment from : Dean Babcock

AA, according to their own literature, only works for 5 percent of alcohol addictionbrThe Sinclair Method has an 80 percent success rate Unfortunately, the medical community on this continent, does not recognize Naltrexone as the leading cureWake Up people!

Comment from : Grahm1993

Lone Star Rocker
If you see alcohol as poison and extremely destructive, you’ll stop using it There’s other ways to quit drinking and doing drugs
Comment from : Lone Star Rocker

Whelm
These answers are troubling There are alternative programs to AA for quitting drinking, but AA is by far the most well-known It is not, by any reasonable assessment, the most effective As Peterson correctly says, the majority of addicts that quit do so without medical intervention Religion has no bearing on that outcome AA works for some, does not work for others Anyone with a drinking problem should consider AA, but it's not the only option (SMART recovery, DBT/CBT therapy, recovery coaching) - recovery looks different for everyone As far as we know a committed practice of acceptance, mindfulness, connection, and service is the requirement How you get there is personal The middle path and the wise mind Neuroplasticity for the win

Theo said something very poignant Developing a relationship with god gave him A sense of being unconditionally loved, that he said he hadn’t felt before I think this is what most addicts, and people, are missing That sense of unconditional love and safety comes from healthy attachment, formed in childhood If a person can’t figure out how to establish that in their adult life, addict or not, they will ALWAYS experience more turmoil
Comment from : A G

Smart Recovery is a great alternative AA was way too culty and judgmental if you ask me Whatever though; if it works for you rock it
Comment from : Me Outside

Eugene Joseph
When someone calls God, a 'thing' , they've got ways to go The reason why I ended up nearly dying of aids in the 80s, is because my 'god' or energy or whatever AA members call it, at the time, was one that I created and it nearly killed me The God I now worship is nothing like the God I created to justify my addictions, He is, was and always will be God, the eternal Creator of all things and His name is The Lord Jesus Christ!
Comment from : Eugene Joseph

Kendall Lucas
You work the AA program and it will work for you

Ashley Ramseyer
Not only is AA a “smart” program as Dr Peterson characterized it It is inspired Consider this: the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous was written by a small group of recovering drunks, none more than 4 years alcohol free, and that it is responsible for not only millions of recoveries since its publication, but also it marks the beginning of an entire industry focused upon substance abuse recovery What is this but the imprint of a miraculous influence upon the world of addiction by a benevolent Divinity?
Comment from : Ashley Ramseyer

40 years ago next week I put down the booze with the help of AA and by the grace of God

Edward SR
AA doesn’t work for the average problem binge drinker It seems to only work for those at the extreme end of the scale I went and found that I was judged extremely, there was jealousy and also disgust at some of my stories It wasn’t a stable environment For a moderate drinker I suggest an online group like one year no beer Way less judgemental and supportive
Comment from : Edward SR

James
AA considers June 10, 1935 the "Founder's Day" - the day of Dr Robert Smith's last drink That makes AA 88 years young this year In June 2035, only 12 years from now, AA will celebrate 100 years -- ie, "First Century 12-Step Recovery"

AA and NA It’s an important part of recovery combined with other growth and self challenging aspects of learning to live life on its terms Addictive behaviour can manifest in many ways and one of them is literally becoming addicted to recovery in its purest form ie fear recovery Brainwashing and other types of repeated patterns of living in the past recall Nothing is perfect and the most important aspect is connection and community Dean 9 years clean
Comment from : Dean Hend

DaMoon
Alcoholics Anonymous saved my life!!brSobriety date-6/20/86--- 37 years!!brIf l could drink it, smoke it or shove it up my butt, I did it!! Just so y'all know, they used to make demerol ,a barbiturate similar to heroin, suppositories that were great as long as you could hold them long enough to get high!! That is the insanity that AA allowed me to escape!! Prior, insurance companies paid 10s of thousands of dollars to send me to "recovery" centers with no follow up and I never got past 30 days after my release!! People say there is no God because they never had cause enough to truly humble themselves and listen after truly asking for His help and blessing!!! But it's coming!!!

I think AA is great brbrAs it turns out, though, I didn't need AA in order to stop drinking I had the "Attacking Anxiety & Depression" home study program brbrVery similar, IMO brbrNot only did it free me of anti-anxiety meds, it freed me of alcoholism And a few other things Like "thought broad casting" Best money I ever spentbrbrThat's why I like to think of the "Attacking Anxiety & Depression" program as a crash course in happiness It really works!

Comment from : Nonfictionon

Kingg Kongg
AA has gotten so watered down over the years it’s nearly ineffective! The 12 steps are not extra credit and they were designed to go through in about 4 hrs and meetings were a place to talk about experience with the steps and strategies to help newcomers, not a place to talk about the struggles of everyday life!!
Comment from : Kingg Kongg

rymc913
Ahhhthe age old question that can really je answered by one of main principles attached to the Big Book of AA Love and Tolerance This does not only relate to people in the rooms of AA But some in AA seem to forget it Recovery is not linear and recovery is how you define it Do research and you will easily find that there multiple pathways And don't give me the "yeah, but they are dry" reasoning It happens brI am in long term recovery I utilized AA heavily Went to 2 meetings a day and took EVERY suggestion my first year And guess whatit worked And I am grateful for that I found a higher power and it developed from there brButnot everyone is so lucky And I work in the field and have seen first hand people who have recovered and done so without the rooms or a belief in the traditional modality They found the more modern definition of spirituality A higher PURPOSE These people give back in all different ways to alcoholics and all sorts of other marginalized and suffering people It is connection To your true self and to others Getting out of one self in whatever form or fashion worksbrI love AA and will ALWAYS be grateful It gave me back everything I have But for anyone in AA to question others paths is a direct violation of its code Who is really dry??

The worst thing you can teach an addict is that they can't help it The cure for alcoholism is to mature enough to accept you have free will to choose and stop lying to yourself that you have no free will to make a good choice
Comment from : internet mail

Jim Reeder
Bobby Lee and Theo Von are in great part responsible for my desire to be sober I was a doomed drunk destined for a coffin or jail cell But now, somehow, I recoil from liquor like a hot flame, like it says in the big book, something I didn't think would be possible for me
Comment from : Jim Reeder

Sutterjack
Many good sound principles in the AA program I was in it for a number of years and benefited from, and still benefit from the experience and sound mental health advice AA gives That said, it definitely is not the only way to achieve or maintain sobriety In fact in my opinion you need to expand and build on the basics that AA lays out - it's not a end in itself But the #1 benefit of AA is IT'S FREE!!! Most rock bottom Alcoholics are down and out and don't have boatloads of money to go to the fancy rehab Use all the tools at your disposal! I have 29 years sober BTW
Comment from : Sutterjack

Jeff Drum
Four days sober, first meeting (last Saturday) in the books It’s currently Sunday evening Next one Tuesday after work Looking forward to permanent sobriety The alternative was not gonna work at all
Comment from : Jeff Drum

River Truth
AA is a brainwashing cult that keeps you powerless and in fear It will convince you that you are flawed and everything is your fault It’s success rate is pathetic They love bomb, gas light and constantly scrutinize you Walking on egg shells
Comment from : River Truth

I hate Jordan Peterson, and I hate it even more when he is right! On this topic, he is correct 12 step is bull shit For everything we know about addiction and the legitimate scientific knowledge that we have to deal with addiction, comfortably and reasonably, without the withdrawal-induced "fairies" from god that inspired the nonsense to begin with, why is 12 step the best we have to offerstill? The success rate is abysmal, in the single digits The focus on a god that cannot by any reasonable measure be proved to exist We can do better, and we need to If YOU are an alcoholic, you are not helpless, you are not powerless You may need help You may need medicine You may need therapy, but you don't need a god and you deserve better You deserve real help, proven help DO NOT go to AA or NA The only thing you will find is a drinking buddy, where to find a new drug dealer and where to embrace "learned helplessness" Do better, be better, and use real words Theo I hate Jordan but I still love you You're a good person and you mean well If you are truly on the political right, where is your suspicion? WHO benefits from keeping people in a system that isn't successful by any measure and for 75 years, hasn't come up with anything any better? I'm sure there is a real medical treatment like the fabled "Helgrimite" worm from Sci-fi Who benefits from almost 10 of the population being hobbled by addiction that they are told they have no power to over come? HMMM? (I don't have that answer btw, I had hoped you might)

93ShogunateDaimyo77
Being willing to learn that I was an alcoholic is the best thing that ever happened to me because it brought me to AA so I could learn to start living Drinking is only mentioned in the first step The other 11 are about instructions for life I was never givenbrbrIf you're wondering what the secret is it's thisbr#1 life isn't about you Your pain is not unique People suffer everyday many far worse than you Pain is just the price of admission for this ride we call life, whether you're an alcoholic or not br#2 - when you pray there is a Power Greater than you that is listening and He cares He doesn't want to destroy you, he wants you to realize that life is a gift not a curse and he wants you to succeed so you can help others
