Obviously people differ a lot in their opinion about consciousness To me it's a feature of the brain that gives (intelligent) animals who have it a comparative advantage to stay alive longer and have more children Humans have it, but so have many other mammals (admittedly to a lesser degree) In mammals it's probably correlated to the relative size of the neocortex There are also quite a lot of intelligent birds who are obviously conscious Some octopussies are also conscious So it's not exclusive for mammals Modern neural science has come a long way in explaining how consciousness is implemented in the brain of mammals See the work of Jeff Hawkins For instance his interview with Lex Fridman is very good Comment from : Roodborst Kalf |

Great discussion Here's a curious point A conscious person can 'fast' surviving on water alone for specified period of time depending on conditions; several weeks is possible However, once a person looses consciousness, for example a coma for a traumatic injury, even with IV saline, the body does not revert to it's 'normal/natural' mode of conservation and death is imminent Food must administered The body does not revert to a state of ketosis which is natural biological mechanism during times of starvation Something happens to 'consciousness' when body got into certain states And yet this consciousness mysteriously 'reappears' to return once the person's consciousness returns and they come out of a coma They would NOT have had that ability without TNP therapy So, what's happening here? To say that conscious doesn't exist is like saying software doesn't exist If you open up a computer, you'll find lots of complex geometry If you know about electronics you might hook up a logic analyzer and look for patterns that match your knowledge of a computer designed by humans, but you won't find the software Eg, if you isolate 32 bits of 0's and 1's you won't magically know whether or not they represent a color, a 4 letter word, a floating point number or a bit array or just dead, unallocated used memory etc etc There are tools like un-compilers and dis-assemblers that can decode the 1's and 0's into "source code" But these are designed with knowledge of the particular machine architecture (eg, analog, neural net, RISC, SISC etc etc) Comment from : Jack Martinelli |
