Carl Anderson and Ted Neely knocked this scene clean out of the ballpark This is just art Norman Jewison adapted the Brown Album created by Webber and Rice into a maevel of a movie I’m an atheist, but still can’t deny how well this movie was madebrbrThis scene has to be one of the most intense scene in any rock opera ever Norm did a fantastic job doirecting these uber-talented singer/actors Carl Anderson (RIP) not only had an incedible voice, but his acting is top notch here both Neely and Aderson delivered a goosebump inducing scenebrbrThis opera has been performed many times with great singers, but none that I have ever seen matched the drama of this one-- that includes version starring both Neely and Andersonbrbr I saw them several times in the 90s and though they could still sing like angels, without Jewsison’s direction, it just wasn’t as intense Sometimes the moods seemed off or oversang with too much melisma Jewison knew how to get the right tone and feeling for each scene His interpretayion of each song was right on the moneybrbrOther performances I never felt the same way Jewison made the difference for sure Nowm had experience doing classic musicals to movies, like Fiddler On The Roof In fact, it was on the set of Fiddler that the late Barry Dennen (played Pilate in this movie), who was acting in the Fiddler, brought the Brown Album to Norm attention After hearing it, Norm immediately knew he had to make it into a movie and took it to UniversalbrbrWebber’s music and Norm Rice’s lyrics are just magical together Though they made other operas together, this is by far their greatest

Some biblical trivia for you, though the disciples here sing about how they will write the gospels, the four gospel's according to Matthew Mark Luke and John were not actually written by the people they were named after The key word is "according" which is often missed out when we talk about eg "the Gospel of Luke" If I remember correctly I don't think we know who actually wrote any of them down, but there are obviously educated guesses, like the disciple of the original disciples for at least one of them

Ok I have severl things to say about this version while some may think it's flawed I like it alot Jesus seems more real than other versions I have seen and the songs lit a strong cord in my heart Jesusxwas fully human and fully divine but I thing this version is a good one to start the younger generation out with so they can sysrt to understand the horrors Jesus endured for us cause not for me being older and understanding abit more of it but fir children This might be a slightly easier one for them to start with but I have always loved since first time I saw but some of does hit hone for me every year I watch it around lent time
