NapTown Piper
So to actually answer the question that they did not answer, how much money should you have in your emergency fundsbrbrYou should have 1 years worth brbrExample if you lost your job today, you would be able to pay all of your bills for an entire year and live comfortably without sweating the little thingsbrbrWhatever that amount is for you, you’ll have to get out pen & paper and add up all of your bills and your total cost of living for 1 year brbrSo for me personally I came up with about $20,000 Obviously everyone’s expenses differ
Comment from : NapTown Piper

Dab Marino

Good video Didn’t answer the question however
Comment from : Logan D

Lazarusrizing
I understood the concept of a "transitional fund" and how an emergency fund could be mistaken because of the uncertainty of the "transition" But maybe I missed it because I don't think the question was answered How much should be in your emergency fund? Does it depend? I heard Dave say to a caller on a different video that his emergency fund of $11 - $12 grand was meager (I think the guy made $180 a year and he was facing over $60 grand in debt) What does an emergency fund of 3 - 6 months look like?
Comment from : Lazarusrizing

Jeffrey Ramsdell
I kinda get the emergency fund but if your job is essential like this past year and if you’re good at your job, why do you need a lot in the emergency fund? I work essential job and I know I’ll get a paid every two weeks, I know I’m good at my job so I know I won’t get fired at all I know something medical can happen! So emergency funds can be zero!
Comment from : Jeffrey Ramsdell

Zorasaphire 1701

Invisable HVMan
I have a two year working capital fund, sounds excessive but my job is always in jeopardy I have been let go because of corporate downsizing or merger at least five times Since I am an older worker it seems I am the first to go I have a high in demand skill set and have been able to make due with contract work during layoffs Knowing you have two years, plus contract work allows you to look for the "right next job" and not take the first thing that comes along Also, now that I am on medicare, we don't have to worry about health care insurance One day I will just do contract work, but I do like having a six-figure job with a stable paycheck Most firms will let me work out of the home so they often don't notice how old I am

Dave, you just taught me a distinction I did not have yet I have listened to you off and on for years, and never quite made that distinction in my head, about the difference between special spending and emergencies I am going to make a change right now on how I categorize and spend my money That helps a LOT I am not naturally good with money and I have to mentally work on it all the time

It’s easy to say what John says but really, it’s not like that if you’re in the position
Comment from : millsathn

Mike Luka
I think of it as a 3 accounts Checking, slush, emergency The slush should be way bigger than the emergency It can be moved into the checking The idea is the emergency fund is TRULY an emergency And to Dave’s point as you make more and more money it’s hard to envision true emergencies you couldn’t cash flow or “borrow” from your slush fund
Comment from : Mike Luka
