I began piano lessons in 2019 at 35 in the traditional method and progress is slow and takes a lot of work I don't believe there are short cuts: you should practice scales and chords, because these are the foundations of music I am now studying church organ music under a professor He assigns hymns and simple easy preludes I still think you need a teacher to teach proper technique and to point out your mistakes and hold you accountable I would estimate about 6 to 10 years practicing at least an hour a day to become proficient

That is a very misleading videobrFirst: it's mostly about selling your own course and positioning it as the holy grail of piano, not a universal truthbrSecond: It's NOT about how to play the piano, it's about how to play popular songs on the piano You teach certain things but it takes much more to properly play the piano such as proper touch, posture, finger strength etc… One to one piano lessons will always the the most effective, if not the fastest and as a piano teacher you know that But selling online courses is all the rage these days!

I learned to play with Flowkey I was not interested in lessons because they have a repertoire of music to read off my tablet to play The first 6 months were hard to memorize fingering and reading music, but after 12 months I could play a few beginner classical pieces Now after three years I can play Fur Elise, Passacaglia, Moonlight Sonata, Canon in D, Bourree, Gymnopedie, Prelude No1 plus sight read popular pieces like Misty, Danny Boy, Phil Collins, Beatles and several more popular pieces fairly well

I'm an intermediate adult piano player started loving youtube piano videos few years back Now, I play a bit complicated movie themes from actual piano sheets, my challenge is memorizing!!! not memorizing the sheets completely but which finger goes which key (since only have 5 fingers) throughout the song I even bought a narrow keyed piano hoping I can play bigger cords a bit easier but again, memorizing which finger goes which key on fast paced pieces are the most difficult part sometimes I do master a song but few months of no playing put me back into ground zero on the particular song

Been playing for 2 years now, self taught Me? 10 months I tracked my hours One hour per day Sun - Fri, 2 - 4 hours on Saturdays Today I'm very affluent with playing the piano I also am the pianist at my local congregation However now I want to learn to read sheet music while I play so I can play every hymn out of any hymnal so that's will be accomplished by December of 2024

With the amount of crowdsourced knowledge and global information sharing these days, there surely must be a way to accelerate this process Just know that learning an instrument is more of an incremental appreciation journey than an instant gratification one Adults continually fight with their own ego, so cut yourself some slack and learn how to embrace the gradual evolutionbrbrI started as an adult with the “traditional” method 1 going from knowing nothing to Bach inventions, Chopin preludes/etudes (etc…) and choir accompaniment over the course of about 12-16 months and managed to catch up with most of my peers So, it’s definitely possible, but it was also the most challenging (and rewarding) experience of my life; a marathon exercise in willpower, focus, and dedication But, I was also in college with all the time in the world where I could practice uninterrupted for 4-6 hours per day I know this just isn’t feasible for most adults, so take full advantage of all the tools and tips that a skilled teacher like Pianoly can provide I bet someone could do it in half the time these days

Very amusing, really got a kick out of your antics here I've been playing longer than you've been alive, yet I am STILL The World's Slowest Music Reader! Over 60 years of "reading" music and no one is worse at it than I am!! From Beethoven to Liszt, Rachmininoff, more recently, ragtime, and I'll spend months deciphering each and every little black dot in a pathetic stupor of frustration I just stick with it to the last page Chords are easy, but improvisation has mystified me forever, I understand reading music better than I'll ever understand improvisation!

There are forty eight diatonic seventh chords (the first three notes are the triads) three diminished chords so learn those And some comping rhythms and you will be on a rocket ship to learning pop music in any key

At 70 and self taught at 25 years (that's about 2 months practice time (smile)) I learned to read music on my own It took me about 1 hour and I was playing very simple music on the first day Currently, I play new music from sheets and have no problem with learning new music (both hands) I can read as I play music but I'm REALLY SLOW (laughing) Therefore, I still memorize most of my songs I can play at the intermediate level with both hands now I appreciate people like Pianoly that keep us all inspired Thank you My first time here I guess, what I'm trying to say, for anyone on the fence that really wants to play is, "No matter your age, YOU CAN LEARN and you can learn it fast"

I'm a visual learner, with excellent photographic memory, so if you play a song in front of me a couple of times I will sit down a play it back for you (including chords) So far that has amazed many people I don't know how to read music or know the piano outside of just the songs I learned to play visually So I can safely say I don't know how to play the piano, but I play if that makes any sense

I began piano lessons in 1959 and quit in 1964 after the piano teacher chronically assigned me music I didn't like -- so in 1971, I bought sheet music of Beehoven sonatas and Chopin polonaises, and learned on my own, mainly during vacation time during my student years I took up piano again (and flute) in 1998, after a 20 year hiatus, but in 2004, a hand injury forced me to quit I began piano again in 2019, relearning some of the Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart, Schubert & Mendelssohn pieces I learned earlier, and began one by one seven more Mozart sonatas I am focusing now mainly on Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms & Bach I still cannot play as well as I did in 1976 and in 2004, but my steady progress indicates it won't be too long before I can play well again

I started the summer of 3rd grade with percussion instruments and a private tutor By the time I graduated from high school I had competed nationally and earned a music scholarship to a state university In the middle of all that, piano- being a percussion instrument, I was obliged to take a year of private lessons that were absolute torture I had a 70 year-old teacher that taught out of her home and each lesson was basically scales, scales, scales She had me working out of an antiquated lesson book with simplified scores from of course, what every 12 year-old boy yearns to play (Skater's Waltz, The Blue Danube, etc) The only thing I acquired from that experience was an intense dislike for Johann Strauss and 70 year-old piano teachers that have pianos equally as old topped by a crochet doily Notwithstanding, I did learn to read music and a modicum of music theory, however zero piano playing skills Real shame too, I love piano

I learned the hard way that there is a limit unfortunately, I started piano at 26 from zero and went to music college 3 years later, at 29, yes I had a great start, I learned and improved more quickly than most people, but I stopped everything in life and just studied the piano To cut the story short, I painfully found out that I would not be able to get to a high level enough to be a soloist and play the hardest pieces like Rach 2nd concerto or anything like it (got to play Chopin Ballade no1 at least) You really have to start very young if you want to get to the highest level At the end, I just dropped the idea of being a pianist and followed another career path and left piano as a hobby I had many teachers along the way tell me that it would not be possible and I didn't believe them, I kept pushing but, it started to get very frustrating because I just was not able to play the hard pieces I wanted brbrSure as an adult beginner you can learn to play really well and learn lots of cool pieces, the piano repertoire is the biggest of all, there is infinite playable pieces, and for most it will be enough, but I'm just saying you can't compete with 12 years old asians who get to Julliards and play anything flawlessly, that level you can just get if you start around 4 like them Also, the piano world, or I would say, the professional classical music world is uber competitive, so even if you are an asian child, you might still not make it as a soloist, so an adult begginner has really no chance, there are millions of chinese kids learning piano very seriously every day, it's not very feasable as an adult aspiring pianist to set your goals that highbrbrAlso, there is no way you can learn properly online, just watching videos, or I would even say with private online lessons Sometimes the piano teacher really needs to get your hand (literally) and show you proper technique in person, there is no other way So, I don't really believe in online piano lessons, I would just get the best private teacher I could find in your city because if you learn wrong from the start it will be difficult to correct after years of playing with wrong habits, even if you are just learning as a hobby, but you want to play properly

A way to speed up the process is by learning different styles at ones For example I teach Tango, but all the material works for any lead sheet Pair that with Classical technique and some Jazz and you will profile half the time it takes! Good luck!

While I do think they should update older learners books this is just a sales pitch for an app or something The traditional way via the Alfred books or similar is still the best way to learn piano Most app users/YouTube players learn pieces but I wouldn’t say they learn piano It takes many of them just as long to learn their 10th piece as it did their first as they don’t really improve their playing much, just their playing of a particular piece Also think people should at least visit a teacher short term to avoid bad habits that will hinder progress

Many of my friends tell me how they noticed as they get older they can't learn things as fast anymore I think a lot of it is just because they believe it to be so and the other part is that you have less time, more stress and distractions and the "brain changed" is rather a small part Or at least very individually different I noticed I started learning Japanese (in secret to prank my wife) at 38 and at the age of 40 now, I am almost completely fluent If I think how it took me forever as a 9-year-old to learn half a page of French vocab, or the same issue at 14 when we first started learning English Now, I quickly memorize two pages on my way to work on the train At 20 I never would have had the discipline to do this, I just scraped through to get my degrees in engineering on "maximum lazy mode" I have played the piano as a kid, so I can't assess that, but I see awesome stories here about people who started 50+ and made insane progress and I don't doubt the truthfulness of these stories at all It's a lot just a matter of mindset

Totally agree with you I started playing piano in December 22 on my 50th I had had one piano lesson years ago and really didn't get on with it because of sheet music Im heavily dyslexic, I can't read English very well so sheet music was a no brIn lockdown I learnt guitar, loads of music theory, improvising, soloing etc i'm now playing at open mic's So starting on piano I used the same approach, and a lot of transferable knowledge With Piano I started with the key of C Playing a C major the moving it up to D minor and so on brI realised that if the chord exists in the word "Dead" it would be a minor chord eg D minor and A minor apart from B Diminished Once I figured that there are so many song in that diatonic chord set I started with "Let it Be", a song I love and in that key But that was just the beginning I have learnt other chords and scales, composed my own pieces, improvised and learnt one of my favourite piano pieces, Comptine d'un autre été (from Amelie) brYou tube has been a great teacher, but I needed to figure out my own road map brOne really important thing is to have your piano out, set up ready at all times Every time I have 10 mins spare I will play as its just calls out at me brbrJust found your Chanel and im looking forward to trying some lessons ive subscribed

I took up the clarinet in junior high and HATED it Not only was the band instructor a screaming tyrant, but Mary Had a Little Lamb was something we played over and over again Dropped it after about two months Nearly everybody that started band that fall was just done with it by spring - the only people he wanted to actually teach were the once in a decade (or two) students that were really talented and had parents that could afford both private lessons and very expensive instruments (he owned a large interest in the only instrument store in town, so he hated it when kids showed up instruments that the family already owned) Despite really wanting to play, I was so soured on music lessons from that one experience that it took nearly 50 years to commit to learning the pianobrbrAmusingly, the kid that kept winning all the talent contests never joined band and his mom taught him to play on a grand piano at home At 12 he could have played professionally

I’m 39 and started 2 months ago after inheriting my mom’s grand piano Doing the faber books on my own and am 4 books in I’ve played guitar/bass/drums for 30 years, played in bands, and recorded albums, so the progress initially was super fast I’m now hitting a point where the curve is slowing and it’s taking more work to progress at the same rate A little frustrating, but I’m up for it, and I’m disciplined enough to power through the silly songs I don’t like, and I love every second It’s giving me a whole new perspective on music and I’m actually learning to read notation! I am approaching it with original compositions as my goal

I'm 59 and I've been playing piano since I was 6 Even as a child I had private lessons and hated it but I really liked the piano I so much agree that learning chords is a big key to the piano I've recently learned so much on youtube I can now play quite a lot of pop tunes and some jazz too my feeling on this is: you need to want to learn the piano NOT just like the idea of learning the piano these 2 things are very different My tip would be: learn 3 songs that you really like mine are: Mr Blue Sky (Eb for me) "Clair" Gilbert O'Sullivan" and the theme from "Cheers" Bb I think Funny your point about the sustain pedal so many people don't get how important that is!

It is important to accept that people have different are levels of aptitude or "natural talent" As an adult new to piano, you must have that aptitude, or it will take years of dedication and frustration to get to intermediate level, under any training plan

Funny, referring to learning as a child only covers around 10 to 15 years while learning as an adult covers 60 years or possibly more Also the changes in the body relevant to the piano are typically bgood/b changes for the child as time marches forward while often not so good for the adult It's really a different animal I have been and am doing the classic personal lessons route and it does have its pluses and minuses So I supplement it, maybe with a fake book, maybe with alternate approaches I end up at the keyboard for more time but in general don't mind since I enjoy it so much I get frustrated at times that I don't progress or more to the point retain as much as I'd like, but in reality I do progress and retain even if not as much as I'd like It's a lot of work but fulfilling

I'm 38 and started learning piano about 2 years ago I decided to teach myself as I didn't want to do lessons I've mostly used Youtube videos I learnt all the major chords and how to alter them to create minor, diminished etc, and I think that's been really helpful to notice patterns in those videos with the light bars flowing across the screen I took violin lessons as a child so I know lessons can be beneficial if you want to be more professional, but I just want to play songs I like at home and occasionally post to Youtube

That would make reading sheet difficult in the long run
