Duolingo is alright if you have already had classes and are looking to keep up your skills, but it is full of mistakes that no native speaker would make, and that anyone who has studied will instantly recognize Ihe only thing Duolingo is good for, other than vocabulary, is entertainment, and picking up bad habits, Grammar wise (learning the proper use of word order, cases, etc)Otherwise it is garbage brI am very familiar with Duolingo, used it just to keep fresh after college classes in French, Spanish and Russian, and it has gotten worse, not better in the last 8 years there are lots of grammatical errors, and insufficiencies that will give you bad habits that you will have to unlearn if you have never taken classes, or studied from reliable textbooksbrA little tip for Duolingo Russian learners Duolingo relies heavily on memorization of phrases, and relies far more on the informal than on the formal, what you need to keep in mind is that the informal is only used by native speakers to talk to their children and loved ones Use the informal to a Russian native, and they will think you mentally handicapped, gay, or are trying to insult them brWill you learn that on Duolingo? No Keep that in mind before you rely on Duolingo as your source of learning

After I got about 300 days in with DL, I started listening to intermediate learner podcasts and it just started clicking I also read from Lingo Mastery short stories and YouTube instructors, most aren’t great, but some are great You have to mix it up! Without it, DL is cripplingly tedious

I decided to conduct an experiement, whereby I'd use Duolingo (a) for a completely new language (Greek), (b) a language where I'm an "advanced beginner" (German) and (c) where I'm high intermediate (Italin) After 1 month of daily exercises in all 3, I think it works best for situations like (b) At more advanced levels, I find I waste a lot of time rehashing what I already know pretty well; and as a beginner I don't feel that Duolingo gives me the right tool to start understanding the language So my advice is to use it to move from the basic to the intermediate level

i've been learning welsh on duolingo for about 100 days now, i still can't really speak welsh very easily but my reading, writing and listening have improved massively the problem with learning welsh is that i've lived in wales all my life, but actually finding fluent welsh speakers is hard

Tbh I think you summed it up the best Your point about seeing yourself as a speaker of the language is genuinely life-changing though As for the complaints about Duolingo, I'm not sure why people expect Duolingo can legitimately make someone fluent when it's structured like a game and teaches very little about pronunciation or grammar and right from the beginning it's clear you're supposed to use Duolingo in combination with numerous sources - it was great for getting me to like learning language and getting off social media to do something productive instead, and my experiences with the app have been positive so far

Duolingo has the best leverage effect to get people to understand the language and aqcuire enough vocabulary written and spoken, to be able to actually read books or watch content in the language they choose to study It's not gonna make you fluent but the same could be said about school, in 2-6 months you can gain enough baggage to start immersing yourself in a language that you previously knew nothing about and that is just greatbrPaying the subscription is worth it for me for one simple reason, it gets rid of ads that overtime can accumulate to a huge waste of time, and keeps the flow going

Im european, and currently using duolingo for chinese It actually is quite useful for basics, even more so because the alphabet and sounds are completely different I get the chinese writing and of lets say "water" everyday I use it to get to a purely basic toddler level that can be built upon
