I have my doubts They upgrade their kits, but there's no real reviews anywhere Just a 3-5 minute "this is what it comes with" sort of video Nothing in depth anywhere Any long reviews are 3-5 years old on the last generation kit, regardless of brand What the hell is going on with the e-drum industry? 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️ Comment from : section8usmc53 |

I drive a 20 year old Tacoma & I like it because it's a warhorse my choice (as a regular apartment player) would be something that works strong & won't break down for years Comment from : J Mason |
It is inconceivable that with today's technological advances, with the many reductions that have occurred with certain materials, we still have electronic drums that look like they are from the 90s I think they do it on purpose, I hope a new company comes along one day and kicks them all in the butt, with round robins, displays and systems like mobiles, integration as audio interface to handle low latencies, etc Comment from : David Viera Barreras |

Boycott everying for a yearthe company's will step it up😊 Comment from : Ralph Haring |

65 DrumsbrElectronic Drums are getting much better every year because they're improving the design to make them feel like their Acoustic Counterparts Comment from : Oscar Stern |
What a really good videoand you're right, I'm scared to buy a current Roland kit in case something better gets released the week after! :) Comment from : Elementary |
Ive been using a roland/yamaha hybrid for a longtime that I upgrade here and there I think its time for a full roland upgrade Love your vids for the info Comment from : Chris |
have to say the design of the 80's yamaha pad looked amazing to the boring design of 2023 Comment from : cresshead |
None of these E drums sound better than EZ drummer 3 none of them Comment from : YOU SUCK |
I appreciate your full coverage of hands-on experience, the changes in technology and how that factors into the mix in practical terms I could use some info on various drum brands and their reputations in the electronic drum markets Comment from : Dman H |

In Canada the TD27 is $200 more than the Yamaha Comment from : sunnibird |

I'll buy my first noob drum set this year and this channel helped me a lot choosing between Yamaha and Roland ❤ Comment from : Aldrin Palacio |

Hi Justin Quick question Can you use the yamaha dtx10k-m with supervior drummer 3? This module seems to have good sounds but i would still like to be able to use superior drummer in addition Thanks Comment from : martymcgarvey |
They are making progress but it’s slow Sounds are better, digital pads are a step up I use the Roland digital snare, ride and hi hats but the hi hats are the bane of digital drumming for me I still cannot get the same nuances with digital hi hats no matter the settings I’m way better with a low volume hi hat cymbal top and a regular hi hat bottom with a condenser mic for live playing Comment from : Alonzo Villarreal |

To be really honest about this topic: considering the evolution of technology in the world as a whole ole I'd say that I propose a conspiracy theory My conspiracy theory is that the major drum manufacturing companies have happily invested little in development of such a medium which I offer explains the painfully slow development of market available electronic drum options I wager so that this might be because of not wanting to replace their acoustic line offerings outright while also keeping research and development costs low for the interim I now argue that if this is the case only an independent and new and exclusively electronic drum manufacturer could disrupt this market but hasn't yet because of the enormous and real obstacle to entry to this market Patent issues along with no real sell to potential investors to help fund such a risky endeavour sees the market leaders release new additions of their electronic range products at a piece meal and snail pace If I'm incorrect somehow Im open to being corrected but to justify my overall point I ask, why has electronic drum products lagged in offering real alternatives to acoustic sets still to this day? Roland's TD 20 was merely incorporated within Niel Peart s accounting set and was utilised as an alternative to having all the acoustic percussion voices Peart wanted to include In other words the drums and it's module was relegated to reproducing percussion parts that otherwise would have required more stage space than allowed At no real point still has electronic drums competed with acoustic sets but you'd be foolish not think they couldn't and could have for a long time Unreal engine on computers along with ai engines and we still can't get a decent e drum? It's the corperate end not the true potential in question here Disagree? Let's discuss Comment from : Brian McGuire |

So, I teach music in a very small school and we had a proper acoustic drum kit but it was hardly ever played because the volume was so loud We bought an e-kit and the take up of kids playing was amazing, at least 10 times as many I miss not have rim shots and cross sticks but the trade off is well worth it I was genuinely surprised at how playable the e-kit was It was a Donner DED-80 which is a very low budget kit We will definitely have more kids deciding to move on to real drums That makes them totally worth buying Comment from : Studio Phantom |

Could you say which software you refer to at 6:53 that controls a video wall? I assume by drum hits Thanks Comment from : Maj Hoop |
I'm surprised you didn't mention anything about the newer digital connections that seem to have the most realistic feel and also seem to be the next step in e-drums I see roland making kits with only 3 components connecting this way But I think the whole kit is going to have these digital connections eventually brbrWhat is it? Cat-5, ethernet connections, fiber optic cables? I'm not even sure, I for forgot 😆brbrUpdate: Just looked it up I forgot it was just a USB cable for 3 components, snare, hi-hat, and ride, I believe brbrCould have sworn I saw an e-drum with a cat-5 type connection 🤷♂️ Comment from : usynthesis |
Great great video! One of the best I have seen on eDrums !brbrSo under $1k where should I be looking? New to drums at 50 Played in school decades ago but it was orchestra snare - bass - etc brbrI am open to drum software if that’s the best way to get accurate sounds - so module sounds may not be THAT important brbrI believe I like the idea of a kick pedal /pad to simulate an acoustic bassbrbrIs the Nitro mesh kit where it’s at? Comment from : Sarge |
The sounds are still so bad, and the machine gun triggering sound is still almost as bad as it ever wasThey really need to rethink their sound designMost drummers don't want their $6000 to $8000 edrum set to sound like a $100 drum machine! Comment from : Cornbob Rimlove |
It's not the biggest deal if they're not getting better I played on this flagship Roland set not too long ago and it is the most perfect kit I've ever played I have no idea what could possibly be improved upon there Comment from : Roland Serna |
Hey man, do you know if there´s a way to replicate the Alesis Auto EDM mode with 3rd party software on PC? Comment from : Lemon Station |
It's not the drums (except for brushes, sidestick, etc) that are the problem It's the cymbals (even the best from Roland) that just completely SUCK There's not enough nuance in cymbal response (expecially the hats) for them to be great Comment from : Jeremy Malli |
I got the Alesis surge mesh special edition, what’s the best way to upgrade its sounds in 2023 All the videos are outdated with old software that dosent exist Comment from : Natevart |
wondering : do we really want electronic drums which don't have any module ? You see this also with keyboards ( all the functionality is in some app ,making me wonder what happens if they "discontinue " support for that app ) I think the direction this is going is not at all good Next step is a monthly subscription to be able to keep using the software or app ie : " I'll have your monthly fee if you want to keep using your expensive instrument , thank you very much " Comment from : Rik Wessels |
E Drums have so much going for them, but the manufacturers are not marketing or developing them in the right way EDrums should ABSOLUTELY be app based and end the the module idea And the app should be easy to use and offer great sounds The increase in price shouldn't be as much about the pyhisical drum and more about the sounds you get access too Comment from : Dad Bod Drumming |
Thanks for the great video I've had several E Kits over the years, and my biggest issues have always been machine gun triggering and the weird feel of rubber/plastic cymbals I'm hopeful that the manufacturers will up their game over the next few years Comment from : John Ryan |
drums are good, but cymbals???? there is a problem with dynamic range brIf compression didn't exist or or you could get increased headroom just for cymbals, so it sounds real like it would in the room Comment from : Christo |
Yeah those Gen 16’s costed way to much Comment from : uonadtehrrocks |
I want larger full color screens on the modules… Comment from : uonadtehrrocks |
I almost exclusively play acoustic drums because the cymbals on edrums just feel like crap to play and don’t sound that great anyways If you use regular cymbals instead of the rubber ones, it removes some of the convenience and noise reduction that make edrums as appealing as they are For me, acoustic is always gonna win for drums Maybe sound design software can fix the sound issue, but the feel still isn’t right Comment from : MoltenCyborg |
2 steps forward, one step back My ddrum cast pads from the early 90s are as still better than most, the snare isn't as good as my ATV, but for toms they are as good as it gets My ddrum4 module was a more robust device, had lower latency, and was the best midi implementation I've had But the newer sounds of my MimicPro are far better I love the ability to customize the sounds in the 2box, but the hardware is not robust enough and the fidgeting with memory modules that work well with it is a pain I've never been a fan of the sounds of the roland products, but they have gotten much better And as Justin points out, there has been a lot of progress and continues to be, but you have to do a lot of studying to know what to buy and how to use it Comment from : gabo |
Pearl Mimic Pro smashed it out of the park with the last update, by uploading your own or paid sample libraries onto the beast was a game changer! bronly wish it had more inputs now (moan, moan) cool vid justin Comment from : imwatchinya |
Im still using the td20 module on my conversion kit and I like it Ive made some nice sounding kits and it has alot of splittable inputs Comment from : John DeF |
Saw The Who last year with Zak Starky on an Electronic Kit and not only did they (and he) sound great but the lower volume that they performed at was great and bearable Comment from : Rick Norris |
I agree about losing the rim zones on the dtx pads but I might take the crash cymbal inputs and used my xp80 pads and see if I can get them back I don't need three zones on a crash cymbal Comment from : Robert Cole |
yamaha's dtxpro modules is a lot better than old dtx5 i know that for sure Comment from : Robert Cole |
Your exactly right I’m not spending 8k on an electric drum set no matter how bad I want one and I’m not buying a 500$ one either cause those are trash and I don’t like them Comment from : Opie Taylor |
i think the future of drumming is electric no one wants or has real kits anymore to loud for a lot of people to be able to have in their homes we need low end kits to be afofrdable to makle the next gen of drummers i would love to see a formal relationship between superior drummer and roland I think that would be huge for our comminuty imagine if beginner kits had superior drummer sounds built in to begin with! either way love my td27 and superior drummer set up but its not do able for some kid in high school Comment from : James Stewart |
bLaughs in A2E conversion/b My drum set is the best drum set on the market 😎 Comment from : The Leftist Owl |

I once tried a bunch of edrums right after each other in an almost empty music store: Roland HD-1, HD-3, Vdrums, TD-8, TD-11, TD-30 and 2 Yamaha DTX flagship and DTXpress… I was underwhelmed with the high end Roland models and also the Yamaha DTXpress was the almost the same as the one I played 15years prior… Confusingly I didn’t like the Roland HD-1 but the HD-3 was sounding good and felt the best… I had the most fun with that (and just wished for a laptop with a plug-in for more sounds) Comment from : Tobias Michel |
I started with the Td-7 paying thousands for a new one, combined that later with the Td-10 so I had lots of toms and cymbals and two modules brMy bedroom was full of this absolutely oversized monster with meshhead drums everywhere, using the old rubber pads as cymbalsbrNow I went to the Td-1 for a few bucks with 3 toms, two crashes and absolutely love it brIt's minimalistic, cleaned up and small but sounds amazing compared to the old stuff where I had thousand options to mess my sound upbrNot much to adjust (threshold only), 15 kits (6-7 useful for me) and I'm happy with itbrUp to now I still haven't hooked it to the computerbrSomehow I downgraded but for me it's a big upgrade Comment from : Marcus Müller |

Not hearing them…🤬 Comment from : Roy Beckerman |

Awesome video!!! Comment from : Echo Kraft |
Please make more informational videos such as this! Excellent video thank you Comment from : TYLER KAY RAPTURE READY |

The last module i bought was a TD-25 It became clear to me after upgrading and blosing/b features like having multiple sounds on the same pad that Roland had reached their "peak" in terms of making e-drums a real, unique instrument and not just an afterthought for practice and had started stripping features out in an effort to sell their latest module I could buy an older roland module and plug it into a PC and get the features i want for almost nothing Meanwhile If I pay $1000-1500 for a new module now, i wont get those features because their modern product line has labelled them "flagship"brbrIgnore the hardware: E-drum manufacturers have been stripping features out on a purely software level simply to upsell I'm not buying into any manufacturer that does that Comment from : Bizm4rk |
Maybe its just me, a beginner on an electric kit, but why go to the point of "standard size on electric heads"? At that point, why not just go acoustic and trigger it? It would be the realistic and flexible experience while still allowing midi or module functionality brbrElectric boasts the benefits of space savings, lack of noise for others, but at the expense of greater cost and (until recently) less functionality Which works for a practice kit where you don't necessarily need perfect replications of every technique Trying to replicate the size is one drum head away from essentially being acoustic, don't have the space saving benefits, and are far more expensive Unless you are trying to replicate a particular sound Comment from : Goabnb94 |
The problem is sampling, we all know dynamics change the sound of instruments, how many samples of those changes are included on the one drum head and how smoothly do they transition with the volume levels And how playable are the samples and velocity maps, if you are looking for a particular sound and volume from a ride cymbal where you hit and how much pressure from the hit must be playable and controllable to be comfortable with your skill I am a solo pianist; I use digital pianos at home for headphone practice after 40 years of digital pianos, I gave up on them this year and purchased a modeled piano with massive control over the sound I know have much more control of velocity and the piano sound has decay rates the same as acoustic (a first) There is unlimited polyphony so note dropout problems are solved And with the long natural decay rates, I can finally play a slow song without chords going silent from fast decays For the first time I am comfortable playing a digital piano, no cringing about the mechanics or sound quality Modeling may be the answer Comment from : Wilderness Music |

theyre impressive but a ways to go on cymbals imo Comment from : 97warlock ismyname |

again, a great video!!! 😃👌 Comment from : krombopulos-R |

That was good information, thx Comment from : DrumRollTony Reacts |

Is it still all based around a piezo? Surely there's a better sensor out there? Comment from : Ian V Jones |
I've been using my TD6KV for like 16 years, apart from a bit of wobbly triggering on the cymbals (poor old things), I can't complain Using EZ Drummer 3 really was what I needed sound-wise though, the integrated samples tend to sound much more robotic much faster Comment from : ChaosPotato |
Can only recommend efnote drums They made me change my mind about edrums and i love the one i got Comment from : Neycron |
Great practice toys They don't help with technique and are expensive Comment from : PrinceAsmodeus |

Great vid with some very good points Justin Comment from : stidger |

Get a good computer with sd3 and a td-27kv2 and you are set for awhile It’s a great combo Comment from : Christopher Pederson |
Okay, so many times it's put out there about electronic drums to be more portable where you go to gig without having to carry a ton of gear and many gigs don't have the space for drums so making electroic drums the size of acoustic drums seems dumb in this case Portability is a definite issue Guitars are plug and play 5 minutes drums still a half hour or more They should improve table top drums ie dd75 for example Just a thought Comment from : Murray Perry |

Ancient Piezos + 127 MIDI notes…go create! Comment from : thedrumdoctor |

I'm still waiting for the magical electronic drum kit that makes me a better player Comment from : Darren Z |
Need to pass this video to new hires at Sweetwater, what a great overview of the current e-drum market Comment from : Luke Boyle |
I just wish someone would design an edrum kit with mostly pop and rock kits and leave out all the other ethnic and weird sounding stuff that we never use - a d make it an EXCELLENT price, with the ability to add on at least 4 additional trigger inputs They'll make a killing Comment from : Ian Hinrichsen Drums and Bass |
the hi hats are still the tough one for me Comment from : RGEMusic |
The only reason they're not doing quality economic e-drums is that they won't be able to justify the overly expensive ones That's the reason If you can get an iPhone for 1k, how the hell is a drum module with technology from 10+ years ago still $500+? The only thing that needs to happen is a startup new company betting on affordable e-drums and putting these old companies to rest It's what happened with car companies when Tesla appeared on the scene If Honda started with the e-cars they would've been $100k+ for sure But, since Tesla started to market this brand-new technology at an affordable cost, every company had to follow suit and start to compete If this happens, I'm pretty sure the Roland TD-30s would be under $1,000 for sure Comment from : Braulio Diaz |
While drum sound emulation is getting close to giving you the amount of control you have in IRL with things like MODO Drum, cymbal emulation is still primitive and far from being close to sounding like a real cymbal does Even MODO Drum uses samples for their cymbals and that makes most of its 7GB size Compare that with MODO Bass, which doesn't use samples at all, and it's not even 500 MB in size Comment from : BrunoDSL |
Hi , question ? I have ezDrummer and looking for a good vdrum not to expensive what would be the best for that ?thank you Comment from : Guido Pellegrino |
My biggest problems with high-end electronic drums, well, it's a me problem I'm fine with the Alesis pro kit with stage-size diameter drums, that are more shallow, and allow different placement without the depth getting in the way But I just wish that these pro kits allowed for more drums and cymbals without having to buy new modules and linking systems Comment from : TheeGoatPig |
If you are on a budget, you can get a great sounding electronic kit for under a grand It;s purely the sound I am talking about You can get that thumping bass drum and snare, loud as f if you have that monitor cranked up Comment from : Orvil |
I'm one of the ones who look for better sounds brModern and working musicians are looking for the best sound despite things being smaller Take the modern guitar devices and ir loaders coming out recently brbrBest sounding modules I think are now mimic pro and 2box brbrHands down 2box was already delivering vst like sounds already years ago Miles away from Roland or Yamaha brbrHopefully one day we'll get a module that's small and has like a built in vst like drum kit like superior or addictive drumsbrbrA gigging musician at a small level doesn't really like to carry big drums, especially electronic drums made of plastic and rubber parts which are more delicate and vulnerable Comment from : riffeishonman |

UGLY money business 😠 Comment from : michael jensen |

Electric SHIT 😠 Comment from : michael jensen |
To me the biggest problem with electronic drums is its fast drumming sound In reality, hitting an object that is not vibrating and an object that is vibrating can produce very different sounds, and the latter tends to be weaker with less point That’s why when I play double stroke rolls on floor toms, for example, all electronic drums sound robotic and unnatural because as of now still none of manufacturers can reproduce that subtly on sound modules Comment from : Robert Vandenberg |
Dumb question, but I have an Alesis NM and want to add some pads Of course they only have 2 extra cable ports But what if I used a dual stereo cable, I mean why wouldn’t that work? Someone please help🙃🙃 Comment from : That Little Gym Bro |
I'm playing a 10 year old TD-30K and other than switching over to EZdrummer for the sounds (which you should absolutely do because it blows any module off the map) I have no desire to upgrade Yes, the new VAD and digital pads from Roland look nice but is it really that much of a difference to spend several thousand on upgrades? Comment from : z |
As always, great thorough work! Comment from : gonzorudeboy |

I actually bought an older 2007 Alexis module for a kit 10 years more modern and it's exactly the same apart from some new programmed kits Comment from : Robin Love |
Only one company did it : SIMMONS in the 80's it was revolutionary Comment from : TOM SERVO |
I wish i could afford an electronic drum set I can't even afford an acoustic kit! But I would love to just have a set to play here at home, but I do have some pretty good apps on my iPhone and iPad that are pretty cool and I've gotten REALLY good at playing finger drums! I can do just about anything on the apps as well, of course there are tons of things that can't be done, but it's fun and lets me play and design my own drums sets and sounds Comment from : BiggKuntry |
